Mrs. Parasol's Picture
Mrs. Parasol, San Ramon, California Age and Occupation: 25, Non-profit writer, editor, and blogger Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Law school student Engagement Date: December 19th, 2010 Wedding Date: September 2011 Venue: Bent Creek Winery (Livermore, California); Reception: Family Residence (San Ramon, California) About Me: I am a California girl at heart. I love the outdoors, sunny days at the beach, and hiking in the woods and mountains. I also love good books and am fresh from completing my Master's degree in English and Comparative Literature in New York City. Living in NYC was an amazing experience, and while I'm glad to be back on the West Coast, I'm also thankful that my two years back East gave me an opportunity to explore new places, make new friends, and indulge my passion for Broadway shows. Oh, and I received a pretty awesome proposal from Mr. Parasol in Central Park. Above all else, Mr. Parasol is my biggest cheerleader and my best friend. But even though I'm thrilled to be marrying him, I wasn't always totally on board with this whole wedding thing and at first, I wanted to run off and elope. I've finally been convinced to throw the wedding I never thought I wanted, and so now I'm busy planning an intimate September wedding filled with DIY details. Along the way, I'm slowly learning to appreciate, perhaps even love the wedding planning process.

I Need a Card Box? Why Yes I Do!

August 19th, 2011 @ 5:22 pm by Mrs. Parasol

There are so many things I didn’t know about weddings until I started to plan my own. I didn’t know that it is considered “bad etiquette” to list your registry information on your wedding invitations. I didn’t know that a wedding dress must be ordered months in advance. I didn’t know that many guests actually really don’t RSVP on time (oh boy!). And I didn’t know what the heck a card box is.

You mean, I need a box for people to put their cards? Can’t they just put them in a pile on the table?

OK, so I guess I don’t really need a card box. There really is nothing wrong with starting a card pile instead. But once I started exploring what card boxes are and all the different types out there, I got really excited. Card boxes can be pretty awesome!

I really loved this last card box, but it is $135 before shipping, which is way more than I wanted to spend. It’s just so cute, isn’t it? Anyway, I decided that this was the perfect opportunity for me to spread my DIY wings (as if I needed another project!), and after a little more research, I settled on the perfect card box.

Do the words “vintage suitcase” mean anything to you? Perhaps a picture will help.

As you can see, my love-affair with bunting continues. I love how colorful and fun this is, and I think it’ll add a nice decorative touch to our guestbook table. I also played around with draping some fabric on the inside, mostly because if you look really closely, the inside of the suitcase does show small signs of wear and tear. But I still can’t decide which look is better.

So I guess I’ll take it to the hive. Which card box do you prefer: fabric or no fabric?

You could try cutting the fabric and making it a liner for the box.

It’s wonderful! I vote no fabric, but I do like the idea of doing it as a liner. I think I just don’t like it coming all out like that.

@Future Army Wife: I love the idea of using the fabric as a liner.

So cute! I also vote against fabric, but I think @Future Army Wife: using the fabric as a liner would be awesome!

I agree with the liner idea. I love that birdhouse one too but passed it up for the same reason!

Love your card box! I’m with the liner idea… I think once they put in two or three cards you won’t notice the wear n tear

I vote for no fabric. And we are both the same, until I finally recognized the importance of having a card box. It’s very useful for me, I can manage to arrange my cards to their respective places.

No fabric - when there are cards in it, you won’t be able to see the wear & tear

You actually DO need some kind of a container for your cards. Never know who might have sticky fingers, so why invite someone to steal them? My BIL had half their cards stolen from their wedding, and they were all full of cash. :( I’d make sure you have someone keep an eye on yours since its wide open…

Oh man, all of you who said that I should just line the card box with the fabric are so right! And I knew that going in–I just don’t want to do the work! Anyone up for a little craft project? Because I am burnt out!

I was sure people would overwhelmingly agree with me for fabric. guess I was wrong. But I love that extra pop of color the yellow fabric provides! Even if you line the box with the fabric, that would be better than no fabric at all.

This is almost identical to what I did at my wedding. Its compact, easily transportable after the festivities and still looks cute on the table. One word of cautiion tho- this box is much easier for people to take cards from when you’re not there than the others so be sure to pack it up if u leave, for example to move to another room for dancing.
