The Dreaded B Word

August 19th, 2011 @ 2:13 pm by Mrs. Ticket

You know the word I’m referring to.

B-U-D-G-E-T

Oh, how I loathe that word. It knows just how to rain on my happy little wedding planning parade every time. It’s also a word that certain people don’t seem to understand. And by certain people, I mean just about everyone (including myself sometimes).

For Mama Ticket, it’s wanting to do as little set up for the wedding as humanly possible and not always comprehending that paying someone to do set up isn’t in our budget.

For Daddy Ticket it’s constantly reminding Mama Ticket and me that we have a budget to stick to.

For Mr. Ticket it’s telling me, “Who cares if it’s in the budget or not. If you want it that badly, get it.” (I love this man but that attitude does not help rein me in at all!)

For WC it’s constantly wanting more money for linens and flowers and decor even when there is NO MORE MONEY, and then making me feel guilty for it not being there (remember, she’s more friend than WC sometimes, and she knows the guilt card works best).

For me it’s…

well yes, we have this designated amount we are receiving from our very generous parents, but how much more am I willing to save up and put into this event to make it what I really want it?

It’s no surprise with all this confusion going on that our budget has indeed fluctuated from our original number with Mama and Daddy Ticket’s help. It became a new number when FFIL & FMIL Ticket most generously offered to help, as well. Then it was yet ANOTHER new number when I realized how much I had already spent out of pocket and how much more was needed to achieve the look we were going for.

Anyone else not handling their exploding budget well? Were you strong enough to stick firm to your original budget or did you give in at the sight of those luscious pintuck linens the way I did?

I actually helped create a budget calculator for this reason. It’s hard to divide up how much to spend and where without ever planning a wedding before.

Ugh. Budgets. It’s the bane of my existence right now, primarily because we keep going over it. Things add up! My advice is to prioritize, determine how much you can spend/set aside, and STAY FIRM. Because things will come up at the last minute. Believe it! Oh, and breathe! Everything will work out fine :)

I feeeeeel ya! First of all, we didn’t even have a budget - ok wait, let me re-phrase….we knew we were broke, but we wanted a wedding, so we just said we’ll pay for it somehow! HMMMM as you probably guessed, that’s not working out so well. FH finally sat down and gave me a number that I could NOT go over - so far I’m doing pretty good…but a lot of factors (linens, centerpieces, etc.) have not been added in yet :( I guess we shall see…

Grrrrrl, I feel ya here. I am coming into this wedding/marriage with a bit of Budgeting Baggage shall we say…student loans and car loan and FI desperatley wants me to pay them off sooner than later. He and I could throw whatever money at the wedding me want, but I am so frugal, or try to be. He said he is “pleased as piss” I am that way.
Right now, our conversations are about paying off loans and somehow we are also still planning a wedding in 365 days!

I had no idea how big our wedding was going to have to be. I was thinking 5 grand for 40 people.

Fast foward: we’re looking at 12 grand for 100 people. Awesome.

Ugghh… budgets. I wish I just had unlimited money for my wedding. But I don’t. Fiance and I have a tight budget. We have gotten help from families. And I try to prioritize. And I am not putting anything wedding related on credit cards. But that means that everything else in my life that requires money IS going on the creits cards. Yikes! What a mess. A gorgeous mess. But a mess nonetheless.

Budgets are not fun. Im already over a bit and now I have decided I want….I NEED a DOC. I know it is not possibly but hey I can dream. I have 6 months to figure out if we can make it work or not. I would be willing to pick up a second job :) FI says absolutely not. :(

It sounds like your mom and my mom should get together and have drinks! I hate the budget with a PASSION. Thankfully Mr. P is kind of in charge of that area because it stresses me out so freaking much. I’ll be happy when the wedding’s over and we’re not hemorrhaging money anymore. :)

P.S. Call in ever favor you can to cut down on the budget! I recently decided that we needed an MC and DOC (why I didn’t think of this sooner is beyond me!), and at first, I was stressed because I didn’t know how we’d afford this. Then I remembered that my aunt and uncle would be PERFECT as DOC and MC. And of course they are thrilled to help. Problem solved!

Ohh, the budget. Fiance and I are paying. He wants to keep costs low but tells me to get what I / we want. Conflict of interests much?

Our budget changes 3 times, increasing each time of course. It’s crazy. But I completely understand your pain.
