Miss Kettle's Picture
Miss Kettle, Chicago, IL Age and Occupation: 26, Non-Profit Donor Resource Coordinator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, Musician & Teacher Engagement Date: May 29, 2011 Wedding Date: February 2012 Venue: Patrick C. Haley Mansion, Joliet, IL About Me: I'm a city girl who loves a good escape, so I'm planning a Chicago wedding outside of the city. I've been described as a quirky yet down-to-earth drama queen who loves fiercely. I used to be a scientist, but now I'm learning to navigate the world of non-profit organizations. I love cooking, blogging, shopping, and music, and movies (Hans Zimmer is my favorite movie composer). Mr. Kettle and I had a short courtship and now we have a happy home with our cat-who-thinks-she's-people, Belle. We spend our days and nights with good food, live music, video games, family, and friends. Our wedding has become this wonderful excuse to bring together hundreds of people we can't bear to be without.
About Miss Kettle

RSVP Karma Worry

August 19th, 2011 @ 10:51 am by Miss Kettle

I’ve been very worried about how RSVPs will go for all our wedding events because of two people: my mother and my fiance. Momma Kettle and Mr. Kettle are both…RSVP-delinquents. Seriously, hive, they never never RSVP. I just knew this would cause a catastrophe for our wedding-related events because that’s how karma works.

Many a bride have had to track down my momma to ask about attendance at a wedding for my mother only to respond, “I’m not sure yet. I’ll let you know next week.” And to my knowledge, Mr Kettle has never RSVPed to a wedding he wasn’t a musician at.

In dramatic fashion, I’ve been drawing the back of my hand to my forehead and sighing worriedly that no one will RSVP to our events. Don’t worry, I knew they’d come, I just figured we’d never be able to get an accurate head count ahead of time.

Our e-party invites had gone out and on them people were asked to either call/text my mother with their RSVP or go to our wedding website and do it.

There have been all types of responses. A couple called/texted my mom and a couple went to our website. But oh, there were others.

There were rebels.

One of our friends RSVPed through Facebook on Mr. Kettle’s wall. And he wanted to bring a plus one. Mr. Kettle had to inform him that he wasn’t getting a plus one for our e-party or any other wedding event.

That’s rough to say, but if we’re not inviting family members and close friends of our own, we certainly don’t have room for extra random people two and three degrees of separation away.

I think the rules of plus ones are pretty simple for our wedding. Spouses, children living in the house, significant others in years-long relationships, those who live together, and engaged peoples. The one exception to this is if someone is invited who knows no one there other than the bride or groom.

Wedding Planning Tip #6: Don’t forget to put a date by which you want people to RSVP!! I forgot to do that. Luckily, we only needed a head count 3 days before the event. Luck was on my side with this. I won’t make that mistake again, trust me.

We had way more people show up to our e-party than we had RSVPs for. It wasn’t a big deal because it was just a cocktail party. But I was right about the bad RSVP karma. I just hope we have enough pre-wedding events to use up all the karma so we’re back in neutral by the time December rolls around. Wish us luck.

Does anyone else have RSVP worries? Any brides have to track down invitees?

We’re in the process of tracking down our RSVPs–omg what a pain! Hopefully your guests will respond to your wedding invites faster!

Oh my gosh, non-RSVPs are such a pain! And we have so many to track down! Thankfully that’s mostly fallen to Mr. P, mainly because about 95% of his family have not RSVPed. It’s so annoying! I mean, the postcard is stamped and has an address label on it already. Just check it and pop it in the mail! Grrrr. And don’t even get me started on extra plus ones. I’m wishing you lots and lots of good wedding RSVP karma, Kettle!

This seriously frightens me. I know my family, I know how HORRIBLE they are at any form of communication and I absolutely dread having to track down countless cousins to see if they are coming (I also dread them asking me if they can bring a plus one). Good luck! Thoughts, hopes and prayers to your RSVP Karma!

We’ve had to track down half our list and now I’m on the home stretch with only a few people left. I’d like to get my seating chart done so these people need to get back to me!

Seriously, I am one day away from my RSVP deadline, with almost 30 people who I don’t know if they are coming or not. I agree with Miss Parasol above - its not like it could be any easier… the thing is stamped, it is addressed, just check the damn yes or no box and send it off.

I know I will ALWAYS rsvp early for all upcoming events from now on, because I am simmering over this. Show some courtesy, you knucklehead guests. Morons! There. I said it! Thanks, I feel better now. :)

Our RSVP deadline was Monday. We heard from all but about ten sets of people- however, of those ten people, one RSVPed through Facebook, one I asked, one (part of my wedding party!) told me over email, and the rest- nothing. Since then we’ve heard from two others. The remaining no responsers are all on his side of the family and I doubt we’ll ever hear from them. It’s RUDE!!

Our guest list was 200+ people and even with the wedding a week away there about 40 people (on his side btw) that we have yet to hear from even after a phone call)…

Its so rude. I have instructed my guy to start texting or calling in a couple days, with an innocent sounding “Just want to make sure you got our invitation….” and follow it up with “we didn’t know if you were planning on coming - we never got your RSVP…….”

I am fuming! I think I need to invent a new DIY project to take my mind off it all! :)

So far, I haven’t had to hunt anyone. I’ve given them a whole month to make up their minds, and as of right now, they are steadily streaming in. It looks like I’ll only have to hunt down a few, and they were the few I expected to be “rebels”

I made sure to number the invitations, but the biggest problem? The wording. Ladies, I even worded it it simply, and people still get a little confused. I got one invitation back that didn’t even check a yes or no box. I think, for some reason, other people assume that if you don’t send it back, you aren’t going to be there…. that’s just goofy.

I just threw a baby shower for my sister last weekend and I had very clearly and unambiguously provided simple RSVP instructions on the shower invite: email ME! But people spoke with my sister, facebooked my mom, texted my brother in law. None of those RSVPs made it back to me in any easy manner. What’s with people and RSVPs? =)

Yup, I had to track down RSVPs. It was most definitely a little bit stressful!

I think everyone has to track down RSVPs - I would be interested to see if anyone has ever received all of them back on time :-)

@hisbahamamama: Let’s hope your karma doesn’t catch up with you!
@sarah: Yeah… I’ve instructed Mr. Kettle that when the time comes, he’s got to be very direct. With the per head price my parents are paying for this wedding, we can’t wait for “maybes” to become “possiblys” and then hopfully “yesses”. That won’t work.
@Miss Teaspoon: A bracing dose of reality. Damn!@lisamarieloves: People are all about the unique RSVPs. I guess they’re all rebels, lol.
@vmblai1019: No one likes to read. I think I may just do the entire RSVP card in bold and super large letters, lol.
