Invitation Inspiration

August 22nd, 2011 @ 9:51 am by Mrs. Pony

Hive, I have to be honest; I finished our invitations and sent them out into the world weeks ago, but it wasn’t until recently that I stopped hating the process of making them so much that I could actually sit down and write about them. Now that I’ve had some time to reflect on our invitation process, I’m super excited to share the results with you.

But first, we’ll start with inspiration (who doesn’t love looking at gorgeous stationary?). I knew from the beginning I wanted to design and make our invitations myself. I blame this entirely on the other (and way more talented) bees before me. Since I have zero design experience, I focused on classic, simple designs that I could hopefully recreate with a little luck, tutorials, and rudimentary Illustrator skills.

I loved the look of beautiful script fonts all over. And since I wanted to use my first wedding purchase (the lovely Feel Script font) as much as possible on our invitations, these inspiration photos provided the perfect way to do just that.

I was in LOVE with edge painting. On very rare occasions throughout wedding planning I see something and realize instantly that I have to have it for our wedding. Edge paining was one of those things. It was love at first sight.

Although I wanted to keep our invites simple, I knew I wanted an extra element or swirl to enhance our invitations. If I had seen the last invites before completing our design, I would have found a way to include fancy paper cutting into our invites, it is absolutely stunning, albeit beyond my abilities.

Were you crazy enough to DIY your invitations? What elements were you drawn to for your inspiration?

If I went back, I think I would add the edge painting, it’s so pretty!

OK, I LOVE all your inspirations pictures! They’re so lovely. And I totally feel you about hating the DIY process. I was so there for quite a while! Now that I’ve had time to get some space from the project, I can finally look back and feel pretty good about our invites.

I love the simple, yet classically elegant look of calligraphy as well. I am in no way talented enough to DIY my invitations. Thus, I left it to someone else to DIY and purchased mine off of Etsy.
