A Short Detour

August 23rd, 2011 @ 11:42 am by Miss Doily

I’m taking a moment from Mr. D’s and my ceremony brainstorm to share part of my weekend with you. Why is that? Well, let me promise you that at first it may not seem like it, it really is wedding related.

This weekend I went with MOH A to the Iowa State Fair. It’s a huge deal here in the Midwest as one of the largest fairs in the United States, period. We have our quaint traditions that only Iowans can have, such as a butter cow:

As you can tell, our traditions seem to center around the rich agricultural traditions that Iowa has to offer. But the fair is more than just animals, calling animals, and deep-frying products from animals. The fair is also a bit about this:

I know, know. You are all asking: “What does the hotness of Adam Levine have to do with weddings?”

MOH A and I went to the Maroon 5 and Train concert on Friday. It was amazing! Adam Levine really has some moves like Jagger. But more to the point, I was surprised and had my heart melted at the concert. I’m most of you have heard the song “Marry Me” by Train:

Well, the lead singer of Train, Pat Monahan, decided to take a stroll during the song. Towards the end of the song this happened (skip to the 1 minute mark):

Someone was romantic enough and persistent enough to get Train to be part of their proposal. It was seriously one of the most romantic proposals I had ever had the privilege of seeing.

When I told Mr. D about it, he asked me if I wished my proposal had been something like that, but I assured him I was completely happy with my at-home pajamas proposal.

What about you? Was your proposal the stuff blog material is made of? Or was it a cozy proposal like mine was? Do you wish it was any different?

You know… I always thought that my proposal would be big and huge and romantic… I was a big fairytale girl. Now, I am ten thousand times happier with my real proposal. It was shy, intimate, sweet, and perfect for my FH and I. Anything big and flashy just wouldn’t have been us. It would have been forced and fake. This was so much more meaningful and so much more real… Wouldn’t change it for the world!

Also, I’m a MN girl and so excited for our state fair to start this week! You have Butter Cow… We have Butter Princess! (Princess Kay of the Milky Way, a bust of our elected royalty carved out of butter!)

I love my proposal, it was quiet and intimate and just us. But I have to admit, something like that would have been pretty great too. :)

Here in Massachusetts we have The Big E .. it’s a New England State Fair type deal.. and I LOVE IT!. We have butter scupltures, just about every fried food known to man present, an entire building devoted to infomercial products, and livestock exhibition. 3 weeks of awesomeness.

on to the topic at hand… it would’ve been nice if it was slightly more romantic, but ours was just fine. The fact that he asked matters more than how it was done.

@KatieJean: Woot for Midwest State fairs! I can’t wait for the fair to start!

That was a sweet proposal, FI made sure I would never forget mine.

That was so sweet to see this! I love that
Train song, and I bet that girl will love it to, for the rest of her life! I also had a great time at the fair. I had cheese on a stick and the best italian sausage and peppers ever.
I wouldn’t have changed my proposal. Somehow, even though I knew he was going to do it, he still managed to surprise me. I just wish that I could remember everything he said, because I have to admit once he opened the ring box, I didn’t hear another word because all I could focus on was the ring. Now I am wishing someone had taped the whole experience for us.

I am from Iowa City and my husband from Cedar Rapids. I am so happy to finally see an Iowa bee!!! Strangely enough, I have never been to the Iowa State Fair even though as it was listed in a book I once saw of the 1,000 places (worldwide) everyone should see before they die.

Hahaha, I have to clarify, these aren’t Iowa State Fair things…they are midwest state fair things. The Ohio State Fair has all of that too (minus hot shirtless Adam Levine, alas!) :-) Gotta love our farm-produce loving states and their fantastic fried delicacies!
