Mrs. Ladyfingers, Saint Petersburg, FL Age and Occupation: 30, Marketing Manager Fiance's Age and Occupation: 33, Sports Writer Engagement Date: December 24, 2010 Wedding Date: November 2011 Venue: Palma Sola Botanical Park About Me: I hail from Oklahoma, he was born and raised in Long Island. Fate brought us together, and now we live in a cute little rental house with our nutty dog, and our aloof cat. We both love to read, watch movies, explore our town, and laugh like hyenas. When I’m not obsessively wedding crafting, I enjoy stalking style and decorating blogs, making collages and painting, napping, thrifting, rearranging our bookshelves, and being a total weirdo with my friends. Hi!
About Mrs. Ladyfingers

I’ve written before about how vain I’ve become since planning a wedding, all in the name of looking my best on the wedding day. Lately, I’ve taken that in weird directions—like, growing out my eyebrows because I’d like to get them professionally shaped and waxed a few times before the wedding. I feel weird, like people are going to start asking me if I’m OK. I mean, things are getting hairy up there.

But I digress. I’ve struggled with cystic acne in my past, and had finally, finally landed upon a skin care routine that worked.

Is my skin perfect? Definitely not. Do I break out anymore? Rarely, if ever, and never for more than a day or two. For somebody with such a long history of dermatological heartache, this is a bigBIGbig deal. But then, I started to pick on myself, examining acne scars on my forehead and cheek, dullness here and there, and blackheads around my nose and on my chin. I felt I could look better. I wanted that natural bridal glow.

I took a trip to my local Origins three months ago to buy some magical products that would give me perfect, porcelain Barbie skin. I told the sales consultant I was planning a wedding. I walked out about $150 poorer. Some of the things are definitely keepers - like the Purifying Tonic. I’d also go back and buy the Out of Trouble Mask they gave me samples of.

But the rest was just… meh. I got the Skin Tone Correcting Serum and the brightening peel pads from the Brighter by Nature line. They didn’t do any harm, but after two solid months, I didn’t see a difference. And then there was the VitaZing tinted moisturizer, which was… yuck. Grease city.

So what did I do, hive, 2.5 months before our wedding? I decided to switch things up. Yeaaaaap. Because I’m soooo good at that. And because that’s sooooo recommended that close to your wedding.*

I bought some St. Ives Naturally Clean Apricot Scrub after reading rave reviews, and used it every other night, as recommended. I noticed my blackheads shrinking! Yay! So, following my lifelong philosophy of, “Some is good, more is better,” I really went over the deep end. I stopped using the Brighter by Nature products and upped the St. Ives stuff to every day, sometimes twice a day. I lost all sense and started using my old standby, Differin acne gel, just to totally clear out some whiteheads. And then I did my twice-weekly mask on top of it all - and the next day, it was scab city.

Seriously, chicas: My skin FREAKED THE #@!& OUT. I didn’t have pimples - they were more like hives, or like very dry, flaky mosquito bites. When I put my toner on, it burned - not tingled - but burned. Clearly, my skin hated me so much it was going to explode right off my face and run away.

So, I’ve adopted a new philosophy: Naked skin. No superfluous makeup besides my mineral powder and blush - no primer, no illuminator. Closer to the wedding, I just may follow Mrs. Dolphin’s cue and go totally bare faced. This is a really bold move on this part. We’ll see.

Next, I’m only using the products I know work for me, and in the combination I know they work best - Purpose face wash twice daily, Origins Purifying Tonic twice daily, Murad Skin Perfecting Lotion in the mornings, a little Differin all over if things start getting crazy. And no more drying stuff on top of drying stuff.

That, along with the buckets of water and green tea I’ve been drinking, has significantly calmed things down in the past three days. It’s a big relief not having to play junior chemist for now, and knowing that I’ll have that bridal glow with no more *fingers*crossed* red meanies.

Did you have any worrisome flare ups as you got closer to the wedding day? What was - or is - your plan to keep up that glow in the final few months?

*Please, I’m being sarcastic. This is totally not recommended.

I hope your skin stays cooperative for the day of! Have you considered using moisturizer? I use Garnier with SPF 25. It’s really lightweight and doesn’t make my oily skin feel like an oil slick. And I honestly don’t wear make-up everyday. No primer, foundation, powder, concealer, nothing.

@Future Army Wife: The Murad Skin Perfecting Lotion is what I use as my moisturizer - I’m not 100% it’s marketed as such, but it does the trick. However, it makes me soooo oily by 10 AM. I’m just so scared to try anything different at this point!

LOL that pic of the old man eyebrows had me crying over here!

I wash my face with noxzema every morning, drink water, and moisturize because I have super dry skin.

Just to put my two cents in, I notice a HUGE difference in my skin between times when I religiously take a multivitamin and times when I don’t.

I use origins and I’ve found all the serums to be crap except for Dr. Weils. Which is $65 a pop but oh so worth it. Vitazing is horrible. I got a free sample and it destroyed me.

I’ve always heard from my dermatologist that St. Ives is actually bad for your skin. That it creates little tears in delicate tissue, and while it might the sarillic acid in it might help a little-it’s better to just use a cream instead of that. Might be where the ’scab city’ came from. I also found modern friction from origins to be better, but apparently it causes alot of the same issues.

I had terrible acne as a teen and always struggled with it. I’ve recently taken up the philosophy of “less is more” and noticed a huge difference. I wash my face with Burt’s Bees Peach and Willowbark Deep Pore Scrub once or twice a week, and with their Orange Oil Cleanser on the other days. I spend a lot of time in the sun so I throw on some Eucerin or Aquaphor moisturizer and I’m good to go! Not only did I cut like $100 a month out of my “routine” - my skin is healthier than it’s ever been!

While that St. Ives stuff feels great, it is TERRIBLE for your skin. At most you should use it once a week. My dermatologist said it is the equivalent of rubbing rocks on your face. Agreed with Lolo above me - it tears your skin and causes way more damage.

I switched from St. Ives because no matter what I did, my face was always red! (Turns out, it’s because my skin was trying to heel from being torn apart). I switched to Mario Badescu after a facial there and have been kind of blown away by how good it is. It sounds like you love that scrubbing sensation from using St. Ives, which means that for me the MB gentle cleanser really felt like it wasn’t doing anything, until my skin tone improved and just generally looked better. I haven’t changed up my routine at all since starting on MB, especially because the stuff is really reasonably priced - cheaper than your Origins stuff!

@kristophine: That’s a good point! I take a multi every. single. day and I’m on birth control (generic of Estrostep) and I still have issues - wonder what I’d be like without either ;)

@lolo7835: @Jess: I read that too, on WB I believe. Which is what made me finally decide to drop it. Oh well, at least it was only $3!

@Jess: I really really want to try MB’s stuff. I’ve heard nothing but good things about it, and the drying lotion has been on my “to buy” list for YEARS. Perhaps I’ll give it a try post-wedding. And yeah - Origins is ridiculously expensive, and I just don’t know that $25 is worth it for a toner that doesn’t seem to do much…

I’ve gone over to all Olay. I use the acne control face wash every day, the blackhead clearing scrub several times a weekd and the active hydrating cream day and night (just a dab). Things are looking pretty good so far! Lately I’ve been waking up with my hand under my chin/jaw so I’ve been breaking out a little there. Need to break that odd habit!

Laying off dairy for a week or two will help if you have problems with acne or oily skin. Try it and see if you notice a change in your pores. I was a derm nurse for a year and loved every minute of it. Also, taking Biotin will help with hair growth.

I’ve been doing the Dolphin bare face technique for the last weekish (out of pure laziness), but I have totally noticed a difference in how clearer my skin looks. It may be worth it for a week or so before the wedding just to clear things up just a bit more. Oh, and I totally switched up my facial routine 2.5 months before the wedding, it’s cool :)

I appreciate posts like this..I know we all have different skin but it gives you ideas on what might work and what isn’t worth the splurge… My aunt spends $200 on the cleanser, moisturizer and one other element she uses and she swears its the most amazing find but I tried it and it did nothing, so I don’t believe one product works for most. I want to try the St.Ives mask because that’s the third time I’m hearing that…I’m so sorry you face had a freak out - glad to hear it’s calming

Thank you so much for this… I had a similar incident a few weeks ago (and I think I burned off a good few layers of skin being too liberal with the toner after exfoliating)!
I really like the St Ives scrub, i’ve also been using Clinique facial foam wash which is nice and gentle.
Good luck and please report back on the total-bare-skin test!
