Dress Size Surprise

August 25th, 2011 @ 12:45 pm by Mrs. Ticket

In case you missed The Arrival

Another four weeks or so down the line when my IVORY dress had arrived, we had a new challenge ahead of us. I had some problems with my health and my doctor informed me I had to lose weight ASAP. So I went on a hardcore diet of Jenny Craig and working out, and I started losing weight (FYI I am well on the road to healthy again and my doctor is pleased). In fact, when I went in for my dress fitting I found the dress was already a bit loose on me.

It was still seven months from the wedding, and the dress was loose on me! How much can they take in a dress? How much weight was I going to lose? I needed answers and I needed them STAT! The extremely kind and patient seamstress informed me that they could take a dress in or out approximately 2 sizes, but no more, or else the dress would lose its basic shape and it wouldn’t look the same.

Cue bridal freak out!

What if I lost too much weight (so not a thought that had ever gone through my head before)?! What if the dress couldn’t be sized down enough? Sensing my inner turmoil (e.g. my 100 mph incoherent speech I was giving Mama Ticket about dress sizes), the David’s Bridal employees kindly offered to let me exchange my dress again, but this time for a smaller size. Seriously, these guys are absolute life savers. <3 you David’s Bridal!!!

Now to figure out what size to order…

We started out with a 16W, which I was told is the equivalent of an 18 regular (which they don’t actually sell). So, given the rate at which I was losing weight we anticipated I would need to get a dress around a size 12 (that’s 3 sizes smaller) and the dress could be altered smaller or larger safely.

May I now tell you how deeply stressed this decision made me? I had only just started my weight loss journey and already we were banking on me losing 30-40 pounds to fit into this dress!? I was scared. Scared that my beautiful dress wasn’t going to fit. But we went ahead and placed the order and waited (you guessed it) another 4-5 weeks until the size 12 came in. We knew it wouldn’t fit, yet since I still had a little over 5 months to continue losing weight. And so, I decided to wait until after I had finished my first month of Boot Camp (totally inspired by Mrs. Penguin) before I would try on my dress.

Did you have a surprise weight loss throughout your wedding planning journey? How did it affect your wedding dress situation?

Oh my goodness! If the worst thing you have to worry about with respect to losing a bunch of weight is buying a new, smaller wedding dress, I think you are in a good position! Congrats to you on losing the weight. You already look gorgeous as it is. I have lost 8 pounds since I purchased my dress. Not a lot for some, but I am super pleased with it. I have my first dress fitting in a couple of weeks so we shall see! And I agree that Mrs. Penguin is so very inspiring!

@lisamarieloves - Haha! Good point! I was freaking out at the time because I really did NOT have another $500 to just go buy another dress, but honestly the weight loss was great. I feel so much better now.

OMG!! I understand exactly how you feel. I decided I was going to lose weight as well. About a year ago I bought my dress. I ordered it in the size I was at currently. About 6 months ago I decided to get real strict with my diet. I lost about 25 pounds but I couldn’t tell a difference in my size. When I went to have my first dress fitting I was shocked at how big the dress was on me. I started freaking out because I had been told the same 2 dress sizes up or down. Luckily the seamstress told me that because it was a corsett back I could go even smaller. She told me to NOT lose anymore weight. My wedding is in a month now. I have my second fitting in about 2 weeks. I am scared to death. maintaining your weight is harder than losing. Surprisingly! Everyday I weigh myself. So far so good. Man oh man I hope I fit in my dress because its going to fit me like a glove.

@Miss Ticket: If you really loose so much weight that you need another dress, you could always sell your current dress on the internet and probably get close to full price for it. I’m just saying… losing more than two dress sizes is amazing!! Don’t let one item of clothing (albeit a pricey wedding dress) hold you back!! I am rooting for you!

Oh my… I know the pain all too well! I originally ordered a 14… then I started loosing weight (about 10lbs) so I called up and switched my order to a 12. Well, I went back to a Davids a few weeks after that in another state to show my Mom the dress. The 12 was WAY too tight and I had major upper body fat rolling out…. so I freaked- called the original DB store back and asked them to switch it back to a 14. Well, they did, and then I lost 30lbs. So now I finally got the dress- 1.5 months before my wedding, and the dress falls off of me… yes FALLS off! I guess it’s a good problem to have but you have to understand I live in a small town and no seamstress here was willing to touch it. I had to go back to ATL to find anyone confident enough to take it in that much. UGH!!!

Can I lose weight as fast as you? I started out in a 14W and am hoping for a 12, haha. You’re going to look stunning, and all your hard work will be worth it! And you and Mr. Ticket will get to have a long, healthy life together :)
