About Mrs. Hyena

Miss No More

August 25th, 2011 @ 4:43 pm by Mrs. Hyena

I’m finished with my recaps, but I’m not quite ready to sign off yet. I still have things to say!

After our wedding, I began the long, arduous journey of changing my name. Only it wasn’t really that long or arduous. I went to MissNowMrs.com, paid the $29 to use the service and filled out all the paperwork easy squeezy. Instead of having you fill out every single form individually, MissNowMrs provides one big form where you put in your maiden name/married name/address/other pertinent information, and then autofills all the other forms for you. GENIUS! Sure there are a few things to double-check on each form, and you still have to send out each form and the required IDs and licenses and moneys with ’em, but it was seriously not that difficult. Definitely recommend this, especially if you’re lazy like me.

Which leads me to the next part. I’ve talked here (and again, here) about my feelings on changing my name. I completely dropped my maiden name and took his, leaving my middle name intact. I do not regret my decision in the slightest. However, the day that I went to the DMV to get my driver’s license changed, I was convinced this whole name thing was a huge mistake.

I came home with my temporary paper license and mourned the loss of my identity. I was not excited about the change, and was so bummed out about the fact that I wasn’t jumping for joy. I had wanted this… so why wasn’t I happy?

That feeling took a couple of days to go away. I think I just needed that time to say goodbye to the last name I’d had and loved for more than two decades. I needed a few days to accept the new name as mine and not just his.

I’ve gotten used to signing my new signature, even though I sometimes accidentally revert back to my old one. I respond when people call me Mrs. HisName. Mr. Hyena still calls me by my maiden name occasionally (ie. “Are you ready for me to destroy you at Mario Kart, Lastname?”), and I like that he does that. But overall, after going through the process and having different governing entities and banks and offices all with different names, I’m just glad to have one unifying name again.

Changing my name was the best decision for me.

Does your SO call you by your last name (or maiden name) sometimes? Can you beat your SO at Mario Kart? Would you please beat Mr. Hyena at Mario Kart? :)

My guy still has me in his phone as with my maiden name. It’s kinda neat, yet strange. It’s gotten to the point where I feel odd hearing my maiden name.

my husband of 10 years.. only calls me by my maiden last name.. when he says Im acting like one.. lol.. now I laugh because its so rare that he says it.
But I too mourned the loss of my last name. Our family is PROUD of our last name.. and to change it was hard.. Took me a while to get over it too. Still when I run into people I havent seen in many years they call me by my maiden name..because they dont know my married name..and that seems WIERD!!!… Congrats on getting hitched!

Yes I can beat him. I loved changing my name! With the many thousands of {lastname} I’m glad to be rid of it. Which has made it soo much easier with HIS last name. I’ll never get lost in the cards…

Uh, I just want to say - oh, first, great post - but thank you for sharing that website! Bookmarked.

It was never a question for me of whether to change my name. I don’t know if I’ll have a mourning period, but I appreciate that today, we can CHOOSE whether or not to change our names!

No, I can not beat Mr Teaspoon at Mariokart, he is just so darned good at it its really annoying actually.

I am struggling with the name change also. I like hearing that you got over it eventually. Hopefully I will too :)

I let my maiden name go, too. Had I made my maiden name my new middle name, my initials would have been EAT, and I have enough issues with food as it is, ha ha. I don’t regret my decision, but it does takes time to get used to the change — I’ve been married for more than a year now, and I still occasionally sign the wrong name.

I would not beat Mr. H at Mario Kart, but I am very entertaining to play with because I am really that bad. I think everyone has a mourning period when taking on a new identity, but it sounds like you are adjusting very well :)

Thank you for the link; I just went to social security and realized how long this process will take. My husband calls me Mrs. Zalpha still. I was married before and my last name was Zalit. So when we get lost in a store, I will call out Alpha!!!!!!! and he would call out Zalit!!!!!!!!!!!! He tries to get the Alpha, but it’s only been a week. He is so proud that he practices at home introducing me to others “this is my wife” “this is Mrs. Alpha” I think it’s adorable! I kinda miss my Maiden name, but I like being an Alpha now….. Even on FB ppl ask me why aren’t you using your maiden name……. I just think it’s simpler to be Carolyn Alpha. Sorry I am rambling…. I just got mario kart on sunday so I’m sure he would kick my ars!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m so excited to use my married name because it’ll make the marriage part more real. But I’m still going to use my maiden name at work. I’ll have worked there almost two years when we get married, and we’ll be moving not too long after that.

@Miss Pony: Ha! Now I think we should race!
@cr6zy: I’m sorry! I hope you get used to the new town.
@Carolyn72: Awww, that’s so cute!
