About Miss Doily

At first glance I seem like a very traditional person. I like the white dress, the classic touches, the white flowers, the wedding in a church, yada yada. I wear a pretty simple and classic style of dress (jeans, cardigans, and ballet flats). I prefer old movies over brand-new blockbusters. Are you following where I’m going with this?

When it came to the music we wanted to play at the ceremony I wanted traditional music. Mr. D did not want the classical music that is played at most weddings. He wanted it to sound more like “us.” He very much wanted to incorporate the song “Hallelujah” by Jeff Buckley. For those of you not familiar with the song:

As you can see, it’s a beautiful song but the lyrics are not exactly what you think of when you think wedding. Honestly, it’s a very depressing song. Despite the darkness of the songs, Mr. D desperately wanted it.

I even had a song that I wanted to walk down the aisle to that is not traditional in the slightest:

And we hit an ever bigger snag while planning our ceremony music: unless it was a Christian song, it could not have lyrics. It was a church policy, one of the few that we had hit that created a problem in planning.

Mr. D was admittedly sad. I was a little disappointed too. Despite being a more traditional bride, I really wanted that song. Then a light shone on the answer to our prayers.

Vitamin String Quartet.

Ever heard of them? You probably have if you have been around the hive long enough. They are a string quartet (obviously. Sorry for being Miss Redundant there!) who take more modern songs and give them the “classic” treatment. As we thought our songs were no longer a possibility, this thrilled us, ESPECIALLY when we realized that the songs we wanted were already given the Vitamin String Quartet treatment.

I mean, this is the best of both worlds for me. I get newer songs with a classic twist. That is totally me!

We also cleared it with our church, just to be sure and everything is fine! So what is our ceremony line up?

Well here it is (let me know what you think!):

Just for clarification, these are all covers by the Vitamin String Quartet.

I’m so happy to have found a way to incorporate my love of the classic touches and Mr. D’s want for our wedding to be individualized.

What about you? Was picking your ceremony music easy or hard? Were there any snags that may have put a dent in your plans?

I love your song choice! If I were able to do the updated music I would have too, except that my church music director wouldn’t allow it…she’s about 90 years old and just doesn’t get it. I was also so sick the morning of meeting with her that I just couldn’t put up the fight I said that I would. Oh well, either way it will be beautiful.

I have to also say, you’re the bee I feel i mostly relate to…i love the way your wedding is coming out so far…can’t wait to see the finished product :)

I love “Dare You to Move” and the fact that it is now in a string quartet arrangement. Though I’m not going to lie, the only thing I can think of with “Hallelujah” is the end of Shrek…. but it is a pretty song!

Coldplay and VSQ was one of my favorite discoveries during planning, our entire ceremony might just be all VSQ doing Coldplay (I love them!).

Picking songs was hard for me as well. I didn’t want to go from a song with lyrics to a song with lyrics so I had to find instrumental songs to use. You know how easy it is to find instrumental songs now though? Just check any karaoke CD!

I was totally thinking, VSQ! VSQ! as I was reading your post! I lurve them. We’re using their covers of Death Cab’s “Transatlanticism” (bridal party) and Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes” (me) for the processional. I love that cover of Fireflies! One of my all-time favorite songs ever. I’m so excited you got to use your choices in a creative way!

I love your choices but wanted to let you know that hallelujah is originally by leonard cohen. Best of luck deciding!

YES YES YES!! Mr. Ball Cap is a HUGE Coldplay fan and I had him listen to VSQ versions of their songs. We so want to use that music during our ceremony but I have to check w/ our priest first. Even if we can’t have it during the ceremony, I hope we can at least have it played pre-ceremony while our guests are being seated.

I LOVE VSQ!! I was actually listening to a lot of their songs yesterday. It’s sooooo difficult to decide which songs to use but I’m thinking of using their versions of Can’t Help Falling In Love and Don’t Stop Believing.

I walked down the aisle to VSQ’s Yellow as well! I loved it, it was perfect. When I heard that song I just knew it was perfect. Great choices on the VSQ songs!
