Bees, I didn’t think it was possible… and I can’t tell you how shocked I was when I found out…

Around two months after we had booked our church and paid the nonrefundable FPC reception deposit, The Ohio State University 2011 football schedule changed. The set-in-stone-years-in-advance schedule CHANGED.

Dun dun dun… duuuuun!
The Big Ten was split in two and OSU’s entire football schedule was tossed in the air. Our carefully picked away-game day was suddenly a home-game day. The horror! Do you guys even know what this means in Columbus??
Game days mean fans starting the day with beer and burgers for breakfast as 82-85,000 people tailgate on campus before the game begins.

Game days mean shutting Columbus highway exits down to quell traffic as 102,000 fans pile into The Horseshoe.

This is what you run into on the highway.

Game days mean rioting when we don’t win, and rioting when we do win. (We’re a conflicted bunch.) Anyone with Michigan plates is in danger.

Game days mean overbooked, overpriced hotels as guests from out of town flood the city to see the game.
Yeah, that’s where our guests will be sleeping now!

Game days mean massive traffic anywhere surrounding campus.

Game days also mean pretty much all the male wedding guests will pile up around a radio and/or TV to find out what the score is. Mr. Funnel Cake thinks this is incredibly rude and absurd, but this is how my family is. I’m used to it.

There are so many reasons why we chose not to have a wedding on a home day, but Murphy’s Law rained grief on us for foolhardily attempting to plan an autumn wedding around OSU’s football schedule. We failed. And having set our hearts and deposit money on our date, we decided not to change it. (Gasp!)
Now, a year later with the game times published, we have lucked out and the game is at 8PM. So if my relatives want to attend or watch the game, our 9am-3PM wedding gives them plenty of time to either drive home, head to the stadium or find a bar to see the action. In fact, if they are coming from out of town, our measly wedding might actually be a more attractive event to attend if they are already going to be in town for the game.
Am I worried about the game now? Not really. Especially after a “few” NCAA violations including the tragic departure of coach Jim Tressel. I won’t get into it here, but suffice to say, OSU is probably not going to have a stellar 2011 season.
Mr. Funnel Cake and I are not really sports people either, so the news really wasn’t the end of the world. I can only imagine how upset folks were who found out the only non-game day on September 24 is now a home game and that there are now NO non-game days in the entire OSU 2011 season.
Did the division changes affect your wedding? Would you change your wedding date for football?
