I could eat astronaut ice cream for every meal and can’t seem to resist buying more shoes. Like a Hurricane

August 26th, 2011 @ 5:04 pm by Mrs. Cucumber Sandwich

As someone who works in a school, I spend countless hours watching and reading about the weather especially during the winter.  This hurricane coming up the coast could provide me with a day or two off so I have been tracking it with the diligence of Al Roker.

On the news this morning they were interviewing a bride as she was loading up her car to be evacuated from the Outer Banks. Her wedding venue/site fell within the madatory evacuation area. As I watched her story I saw the ticker at the bottom of the screen list Cape May County as another evacuation area. Since I sometimes have the mental capacity of a 7 year old, I immediately thought about myself and our wedding. A hurricane taking over our wedding day will probably now haunt my dreams.

What amazed me about the interview was how calmly the bride was reacting to the news.

I probably wouldn’t have been able to be on camera because I would have been blubbering and sobbing about my day being ruined. This bride just shrugged her shoulders and said, “it is what it is.” She talked about how at the end of the day they just wanted to get married and they were going to drive inland to look for somewhere to do just that. I retold the story to MamaCS expecting the same reaction that I had (sheer horror), but MamaCS told me about a friend whose daughter got married during last winter’s snow-mageddon. She said the friend knocked on some doors, invited the neighbors and it was a great party!

I swear I have a point and it seems to be that my wedding is going to be entirely what I make of it. Mrs. Trail Mix, Mrs. Fro-Yo and Mrs Tiramisu (especially Mrs. Tiramisu!) all weathered the weather and I should too. Not only did they handle the uncontrollable events on their wedding day with grace and poise but they threw an awesome party. If you are having a good time despite the hiccups then your guests will too! While having to be evacuated for my wedding might be an extreme situation, it may rain for my outdoor ceremony. I am not going to say there is nothing I can do about it because there is…. I can maintain my positive attitude and guests will probably follow suite. I will still be surrounded by friends and family for an out-of-control party and I will have just married Mr. Cucumber Sandwich. You can’t ask for anything better than that.

In case anyone is getting married this weekend, I found you an entrance song.

Anyone else worried about weather for the big day? Married bees, how did you deal with poor weather?

*P.S. Everyone stay safe out there this weekend!*

I know when Katrina hit here, there were tons of brides that had to cancel their plans. Most had to indefinitely.

Our wedding will be during the 2012 hurricane season. Usually, October is a slow month in the tropics, so I’m hoping the odds stay in our favor. Until then, I’m not gonna worry about it too much.

Hopefully, Irene fizzles out a little bit before it makes landfall. My heart goes out to everyone along the East Coast. Stay safe y’all… and take it seriously please!!

My sister planned her wedding in New Orleans during Labor Day weekend - coincidentally, the three year anniversary of Katrina. I think she hoped lighting wouldn’t strike twice…. Unfortunately, that was the weekend hurricane Gustav hit and two days before the wedding, she had to call everyone to tell them to cancel and her and her now-husband evacuated the city.
They ended up rescheduling their wedding for January, and had perfect weather in New Orleans. All’s well that ends well perhaps.

We’re in Fayetteville and getting rain already. Hopefully, we won’t have any early season storms next June!

I kept thinking about brides getting married this weekend. Poor things!I’d be devastated if I was getting married this weekend! I made me fiance take note that August is OFF as a possibility for us because it rains too much! Wishing everyone in Irene’s path a safe weekend.. still waiting to see if I need to evacuate..

I suddenly feel very fortunate to be on the west coast sans Hurricane’s and just dealing with 100 degree temps.

@toshella: This Monday (August 29th) marks 6 years since Katrina hit. The MS Gulf Coast is still cleaning up from all that. I can tell you that’s something I never wanna have to go through again.

Great post!! I bet there are a lot of brides whose wedding have been affected by Mother Nature and unexpected events! Don’t let it worry you too much, Miss. CS! It’s going to all work out and like you said, especially so long as you have a positive attitude!!!

I wasn’t too worried about the weather for the wedding, but I was definitely worried about there being a hurricane that ruined our honeymoon, and it looks like we escaped just in time (I don’t know if Jamaica got hit, but Irene started the day after we left). Apparently, we got really lucky.

I never realized that getting married from June through November is a terrible idea! Yet, brides here in Puerto Rico love summer weddings…

Enjoy your days off, but I hope they are just that. God willing everyone will be safe. We’ve already had two scares over here this year, and Irene’s tail with its unstoppable rain kept on for days after, causing more damages than the actual hurricane hit. So stay safe guys, and do not underestimate the weather conditions, even if you at some point feel like the radars are pulling one on everyone.

I had to accept long ago that the weather may suck on our wedding day. It’s Illinois, weather can change in an instant here, and I mentally prepared myself for that from day one. I wish every bride could have perfect weather (whatever that means to her), but it’s just not the case. And that bride is right, it’s ultimately about getting married.

Not sure if it’s the same bride you’re reffering to… but I live in Raleigh and heard a story similar to that. The lady I heard about had about ten days to formulate a back up plan and move her wedding in the outer banks to a new venue in Raleigh. Good news for her, the original venue refunded her every penny and she was able to figure out a new plan and will be married tomorrow. =]

I was stressed about the weather because the forecast the week of our wedding was rain every single day, except out wedding. i figured it was like a joke and it would definitely rain on our day, but the weathermen proved right and we got the only nice day.

That song is perfect for this weekend.

I feel bad for all the brides on the Eastern seaboard who might have their wedding affected by Hurricane Irene. Having said that, my wedding took place two weeks ago and a severe thunderstorm with heavy rain, wind and a whole lot of thunder and lightning arrived just in time for my outdoor ceremony. We had a tent, so the show went on as scheduled, only to have the storm stop just as we were walking down the aisle, figures lol In the end, hurricane or thunderstorm, the wedding will happen somehow.

I saw the same interview. I was like wow they found the calmest bride in the world! I feel bad for all the brides getting married during this thing- esp. b/c it’s such a popular weekend (right before the end of the summer.) I guess it is what you make of it, but no matter what, a huge bummer.

I too got married on an NC barrier island. i grew up there and couldn’t imagine it any other place. even though i specifically scheduled our wedding for april to avoid hurricane season we still ended up with insane weather during what is now known as tornado weekend. bottom line, coastal NC is extremely unpredictable regardless of the date…i would be extremely careful about planning any important event during hurricane season.

I’m getting married during hurricane season and I’m soooo scared! My cousin had her wedding today and refused to cancel! We went and quickly left! I decided if these are the weathe conditions for my wedding, I would postpone. Im sure I would cry but I would postpone.

I made the decision in the beginning not to stress about what may happen weather wise. NYE in the midwest can be a 50 degree day, a 10 degree day or a blizzard! We’ll make the best of whatever happens (although I pray that it is perfect with a light dusting of snow!).

@toshella: Oh no! I guess it worked out for the best though.
@Beachstone: Good Advice!
@Miss Sunhat: I am trying not to be stressed about the weather either but it is hard :)
