Music to My Ears

August 26th, 2011 @ 8:44 am by Miss Petit Four

When I was little I saw a Barbra Streisand movie called The Mirror Has Two Faces. I don’t remember what the movie was about, but I do remember the name of a cheesetastic song that I was sure would be my wedding song one day.

Soooo corny, right? Also, I’m not really sure why The Notebook is playing the background… Sorry about that.

Anyway, my tastes have changed a little since then, so I have been thinking about what our “first dance” song will be. Right now my favorite is “Magic” by Kenny Chesney. It’s perfect for our island wedding, and I have never heard anyone else pick this song.

But what about the father/daughter dance, you say? Well, an obvious choice would be “I Loved Her First” by Heartland.

But sadly, this song makes me want to break down into the fetal position. Which is not really the look I am going for on my wedding day.

I found the perfect alternative for my dad and me: “You Are My Sunshine”! Specifically this version of it by Elizabeth Mitchell. My dad and I used to play this song as a duet on the piano when I was little, and every once in a blue moon we will bust it out just for fun.

This song makes me tear up but not cry like an infant, so I feel like it’s a good fit.

What songs did you pick for your round of dances? How did you narrow it down?

I actually just wrote my father/daughter song post. I’m loving that Kenny Chesney song. I’ve never heard it but it is so perfect! It def has an island feeling and is sexy and romantic and memorable! Mr. Ball Cap and I are still narrowing our choices down.

That’s so funny the way you describe your reaction to “I Loved Her First”!

The F/D song I chose was “Father and Daughter” by Paul Simon, and the first time I listened to it (and many times after) it made me tear up.

But it’s a faster song, and the day of the wedding the first thing my dad did was pick me up and spin me around, and that just sort of set the tone! Our dance was fun and upbeat, and I loved it :)

My FI and I picked “Lucky” by Jason Mraz as our first dance. We wanted something a little perky and we are learning to foxtrot to it which is so fun and adorable! I like that better than holding each other like at a middle school dance and swaying back and forth to “Wonderful Tonight” which was our original choice (and yes we DID dance to that at prom together!) For my F/D dance I want to choose a Beatles song because my daddy and I listened to the Beatles non-stop when I was a kid. I’m thinking “In My Life” which is a bit sad so hopefully won’t make me assume the fetal position!! Any other ideas for a good F/D Beatles song?

UGH!!! Heartland just HAS to be my dad and my song… And every time I hear it I do the same. I want to bawl like a little girl and never stop. Just thinking about the song makes me want to cry… I’m glad others have the same response!

I’m debating on my F/D dance. ‘I loved her 1st” always makes me cry too, so I might come up with a few options and let my dad decide if he wants to be emotional with that song or go with something else.

I’ve been considering “You Are My Sunshine” for our F/D dance too! I’m worried it will make me cry too much though :) My dad used to sing it to me as a kid. I really like this version; I hadn’t heard it before, so thanks for sharing!

I’ve been successfully avoiding music decisions for a while, after Mr. Ticket and I chose our first song I decided it didn’t matter so much anymore. I really should get around to that…

OMG we need to decide on dances…and all our music and we are only a few weeks from our wedding! I totally think you should go with the first song, cheesy 80’s songs are the best.
