Dealing with the Stress

August 27th, 2011 @ 4:30 pm by Mrs. Funnel Cake

They say that weddings are one of the most stressful events of your life, up there on the list with death of a spouse, divorce, jail and illness. Apparently changing jobs can be very stressful life events as well. This year both Mr. Funnel Cake and I have changed jobs and in my case, it was very, very stressful.

In all honesty, this year has probably been one of the most stressful ones we have gone through together. I took this stress level test and scored nearly 400 points. It doesn’t even include anything on there about scares with your residence permit, stress coping with language difficulties in a foreign country and general fear of deportation and separation. With all that stress, it wasn’t a surprise when I wound up at the doctor’s office this summer and was told I have mono. Great. Now I was stressed and extraordinarily tired.

For me, thinking about the wedding has been a happy place in what have been some dark moments at times. Sometimes riding the commute home, I would take my mind to a dream where I am surrounded by loving family and friends and my soul is filled with warmth and serenity. That sounds incredibly cheesy, but the wedding has been my beacon of light. If daydreaming about cake toppers makes me happier, by golly I’ll fantasize!

Now I focus on the next two months. As we finish projects and wrap up loose ends, I will continue to try and get my mental and physical health in order. I’ve been taking care of my body to get it back in shape after the mono knocked me out and train for hiking in Hawaii. I’m trying to drink two litres of water a day in addition to popping Echina pills to boost my immune system. I’ve also been taking a yoga course to aid in both my mental and physical well being, and Mr. Funnel Cake and I recently started a dance course together. I may not be stress-free, but I feel pretty good.

How are you managing your stress? Does your wedding stress help or hurt you?

My stress level is incredibly high right now, ugh. Sucks that yours has been too! So glad your wedding is a good thing though–not another thing contributing to your crappy stresses!!

well, getting married is stressful for sure, but it’s nowhere near as stressful as handling the death of a spouse. after that…nothing really compares. i personally allow myself the time after my son goes to bed to devote to ME, barring anything that is absolutely imperitive to survival that needs to be done, lol. a little bit of time to yourself every day does wonders.

Oh boy. We had wedding stress hit us in the face last night. It’s so difficult to manage everyone’s expectations while trying to keep ahold of your own. But we’ll get through it on the other end.

The stress train hit me this week. Last night when I got home from work I had an emotional breakdown. Thank goodness for the most awesome FI! He listened to what was going on and started right away to make sure this stress wouldn’t continue on. Then I slept for 12 hours. Today I feel great and by tomorrow I’ll be ready to finish tackling wedding planning.

When you feel stress building up, take a few very deep breaths, filling up your diaphragm with air. This is especially helpful if you sit at work. Try to lift your sternum a full two inches as you inhale. Giving your organs room to function properly will make you feel a lot better physically, and the deep breaths will help you relax.

Massages are great, and so is daily exercise. Get out for a walk every day on your break or at lunch time. Even ten minutes will infuse your body with oxygen and stamina to get that wedding planning done!

I am handling these last few crazy weeks with running it out, cuddles with my kitties, and wine. Good to hear you are doing better! Just keep thinking about the wedding! And Hawaii!

My stress level is 467!! A new job for me and Mr. Kettle, moving, getting married, changes in our family dynamics is a lot. I knew it was a lot, but being a math person, seeing it in numbers makes it feel bigger somehow…
I will be heading back to yoga to help de-stress… as soon as my work schedule permits…
