So my natural hair color is gone, as is that muddy brown color I ended up with after my first hair appointment (not a bad color, but definitely not what I was going for). Here’s what I came out of the salon with:
Personal Photo
It’s actually darker and richer than what it looks like in the picture (thank you bad lighting!), and I love it! It came out exactly the way I hoped it would. After months of giving my hair a break, I finally feel like myself again—my brunette-loving self.
Once again, the salon supervisor tried to talk me into getting a PM Shine, which is a demi-permanent dye and what I got last time. I get why they suggest this:
it’s easier and better for your hair, and as it fades, it blends well with your natural hair color, so you never have that awkward dye line as your hair grows out. I guess it’s also easier to change your color if you have previously used a demi dye.
The supervisor was adamant that this was the best choice, but I wanted to know if it would get me to that rich dark chocolate brown color I was after. Her response: “I think so. But if it doesn’t, you can always come back again.” Um, no. I’m not made of time, and the thought of spending another two and a half hours in the salon getting my hair dyed was not an option for me. I also didn’t want to put my hair through a third chemical treatment. Once I assured her that yes, I’ve had this hair color before, yes, I plan on maintaining it, and yes, I do really, truly, and honestly want very dark brown hair, she finally relented and let me get regular old dye, just like I wanted in the first place.
I guess the moral of the story is to know what you want and stick to your guns. And also that salon supervisors can be really weird about giving customers what they want. I felt like I was asking them to bleach my hair or dye it green. I mean, is dark chocolate brown really that unheard of? I had to fight so hard to get what I wanted, and that was just kind of odd to me. Oh well.
In the end, it all worked out, and I couldn’t be happier with my new hair color. It’s what I’m used to and most comfortable with. And that’s how I want to get married.
Did any of you have to fight to get exactly what you wanted for your wedding day look? Any advice on how to convince people that you really do want what you ask for?
