Mrs. Parasol, San Ramon, California Age and Occupation: 25, Non-profit writer, editor, and blogger Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Law school student Engagement Date: December 19th, 2010 Wedding Date: September 2011 Venue: Bent Creek Winery (Livermore, California); Reception: Family Residence (San Ramon, California) About Me: I am a California girl at heart. I love the outdoors, sunny days at the beach, and hiking in the woods and mountains. I also love good books and am fresh from completing my Master's degree in English and Comparative Literature in New York City. Living in NYC was an amazing experience, and while I'm glad to be back on the West Coast, I'm also thankful that my two years back East gave me an opportunity to explore new places, make new friends, and indulge my passion for Broadway shows. Oh, and I received a pretty awesome proposal from Mr. Parasol in Central Park. Above all else, Mr. Parasol is my biggest cheerleader and my best friend. But even though I'm thrilled to be marrying him, I wasn't always totally on board with this whole wedding thing and at first, I wanted to run off and elope. I've finally been convinced to throw the wedding I never thought I wanted, and so now I'm busy planning an intimate September wedding filled with DIY details. Along the way, I'm slowly learning to appreciate, perhaps even love the wedding planning process.

Bullsh*t Hair Color No More!

August 29th, 2011 @ 8:16 am by Mrs. Parasol

So my natural hair color is gone, as is that muddy brown color I ended up with after my first hair appointment (not a bad color, but definitely not what I was going for). Here’s what I came out of the salon with:

Bullsh*t Hair Color No More! : wedding hair san ramon Hair206 Hair+206

Personal Photo

It’s actually darker and richer than what it looks like in the picture (thank you bad lighting!), and I love it! It came out exactly the way I hoped it would. After months of giving my hair a break, I finally feel like myself again—my brunette-loving self.

Once again, the salon supervisor tried to talk me into getting a PM Shine, which is a demi-permanent dye and what I got last time. I get why they suggest this:

it’s easier and better for your hair, and as it fades, it blends well with your natural hair color, so you never have that awkward dye line as your hair grows out. I guess it’s also easier to change your color if you have previously used a demi dye.

The supervisor was adamant that this was the best choice, but I wanted to know if it would get me to that rich dark chocolate brown color I was after. Her response: “I think so. But if it doesn’t, you can always come back again.” Um, no. I’m not made of time, and the thought of spending another two and a half hours in the salon getting my hair dyed was not an option for me. I also didn’t want to put my hair through a third chemical treatment. Once I assured her that yes, I’ve had this hair color before, yes, I plan on maintaining it, and yes, I do really, truly, and honestly want very dark brown hair, she finally relented and let me get regular old dye, just like I wanted in the first place.

I guess the moral of the story is to know what you want and stick to your guns. And also that salon supervisors can be really weird about giving customers what they want. I felt like I was asking them to bleach my hair or dye it green. I mean, is dark chocolate brown really that unheard of? I had to fight so hard to get what I wanted, and that was just kind of odd to me. Oh well.

In the end, it all worked out, and I couldn’t be happier with my new hair color. It’s what I’m used to and most comfortable with. And that’s how I want to get married.

Did any of you have to fight to get exactly what you wanted for your wedding day look? Any advice on how to convince people that you really do want what you ask for?

The color looks fantastic on you. Way to stand firm and not let them pressure you into the wrong decision. I think sometimes you have to straight out tell people “This is what I really want, I’m paying for this and it is my final decision!”

This is me! I am still rocking my bs hair colour right now and going to get it dyed the nice chocolate brown at the end of this week.

What kind of shampoo do you use to keep it from fading?

Such a pretty color on you! I must admit if I had to fight to get the color I wanted when I was the one paying to get my hair dyed I would have probably just walked out or never gone back. I’ve only ever used temporary dye out of a box on my hair, then I only had to fight my parents haha.

Your hair looks great! I really would have been tempted to leave that salon and go somewhere else. Luckily, I have been going to my hairdresser for years and she does exactly what I want.

so true! i went in and asked for bangs once and the lady basically refused, saying it was too drastic and i wouldn’t like it. what? i know what im doing! im not that fussy about my hair. finally a younger stylist just took me away and said she’d take care of it. and did what i wanted. and it was fine. yeesh.

Thanks so much, ladies! I’m still loving it, and I’m so excited that I finally feel like myself again. :)

And I totally almost walked out, but I really wanted them to fix it for free, like they promised. The stylist I worked with was great–after her supervisor left, she was like, “I don’t get it. I’ve gone from dark brown hair to bleach blonde, and I’ve only ever used permanent dye. I’m fine, and it all worked out.” I’ll be looking for a new stylist anyway once I’m with Mr. P down in LA.

@Mrs. Waffle & @Miss Honey: Doooo it! Like now! Best decision ever.
@sarah: Yeah, it just hair! Do what I want, and I’ll be happy! It’s so funny, but it’s like, we know ourselves and our hair best, so it’d be great if stylists just did what we asked!
@MissMusic: I got this done exactly three weeks prior to the wedding. I’m hoping it’ll kind of “ease” in a little more by then and look even more perfect (if that makes any sense!).

@asfoura: My stylist recommended Pureology. I usually just use Garnier, but I think I want to give this new one a try. It sounds amazing.
