Pink Pretties

Cake stands are expensive. No joke. And while I love to drool over beauties like this…

I simply can’t justify $75.00 for a cake stand right now. But we still need (as much as anyone can ever NEED something frivolous for a wedding) a cake stand. I really love pink ones; they are a bit more unique than the average clear glass ones (which I still love and totally have one of). I searched high and low and couldn’t find one in a reasonable price range.

Then one day I was checking Groupon (as I so often do) and they had a deal for Color Me Mine. With credits, I already had the deal equated my spending $5 to get $30 worth of awesomeness at the store. So I called up the local Color Me Mine, and sure enough, they had a cake stand available to paint! Sold! I bought the deal and figured I would just go in when I had time.

Well, a few days ago I was so inspired by Miss High Wire’s artistic bachelorette party I decided to go after work and make our cake stand! I have to admit I was pretty stoked. When I got to the store I asked them about the cake stand only to find they had just sold the last one and they didn’t know if they would be getting any more in! Color me disappointed! I didn’t give up that fast though, one of the store’s EXTREMELY helpful workers helped me piece together a bowl and plate to makeshift a cake stand. I set to work and started painting and painting and painting…yeah, I’m a bit of a perfectionist and I had to force myself after 2 hours to just let my effort be good enough and quit while I was ahead! I loved how the colors were turning out, but my ability to write Mr. Ticket’s (and my future) last name on the stand (under where the cake would be) was failing miserably. I won’t get to pick up the finished product until later this week (at which time I will show you pictures as I failed to take any thus far…whoops :( ) but I have to say I’m pretty excited to see how it turns out. Even if it’s not perfect, I made it! Okay well I painted it… but still it’s something we get to keep and use for the rest of our lives. And it’s pink!

FYI -  as I googled ’Pink Cake Stand’ for the link earlier in the post,  I found this beauty for only $33… live and learn!

It costs about the same as what I paid for my semi-DIY cake stand today. Except mine will say Mr. Ticket’s last name and our wedding date on it, so it was totally worth it.

Will you be making any keepsakes for your wedding?

We made & painted 13 cake stands for our reception. I think we spent a total of $40…maybe $50 for all the supplies.

I bought that rosanna cake stand!! and it was $30 after promos and gift cards.

I don’t remember why but it had a promo for $25 off $65 at the time. And I just bought an amazon gift card $10 for $20 worth through livingsocial. So total with my amazon prime, I spent $30 on it. Keep an eye out on Amazon if you really like it.

I am looking for a pretty white milk glass cake stand… they are all so expensive, especially with shipping! If anyone knows of a good deal on one, please share.

I totally wanted my own special cake stand but try researching 18″ square cake stand and you will be horrified at the cost! Maybe we should have done several small cakes instead.

I saw a great DIY for this online somewhere! Go to the thrift store near you and look for a nice glass plate and a candle holder/vase that matches (I got mine for about 5 bucks!)…make sure the plate will sit nicely on top of the candle holder/vase. Then get some E9000 glue (it glues glass to glass), glue them together, and set some heavy books on top overnight. Then you can paint whatever color you want the next day! Much much cheaper!

The pink ones are sooo adorable..and not just because pink is my favorite color :) I really like the idea of creating your own, either painting or the candlestick and plate route

I got our cupcake stand for free, but it will only hold so many, so I’m going to make some more little ones to hold the rest. You are my inspiration. I can’t wait to see what it looks like!

We’ve been picking up cake stands whenever we see them on sale for under $15 (AC Moore and Michael’s sell cheap glass see-through ones, and Michael’s just had a bunch on clearance for like $5 from a summer pie themed baking line.)

The other day I bought some spray paint and spray painted all of the cake stands the same color. They look awesome. You can totally make cheap, nice-looking cake stands yourself. <3

Ohhh, I can’t wait to see your cake stand! We were planning on making ours, but unfortunately, that was one of the DIY projects we let fall by the wayside to preserve our sanity.

I needed 13 cake stands and the caterers were going to charge $18 a piece. Well, you don’t even get to keep them! So forget that- I set out and bought flat white plates from CB2 and these awesome flat topped candle holders from IKEA and glued them together. You can’t tell I made them at all. They look way better than anything I saw in stores, have a gorgeous modern look to them, were way cheaper than rentals- and we get to keep them!
