Mrs. Macarons's Picture

I have a ton of DIY projects and lots of little details I’m dying to share and can't wait to celebrate with our closest friends and family.
About Mrs. Macarons

Today marked a very important day for the Macarons. We made a pilgrimage downtown to the county clerk’s office to apply for our marriage license! We snapped a quick picture documenting the occasion before heading inside where picture taking is verboden.

I figured it’d be a lot like going to the DMV so we filled out all the necessary forms beforehand. Much to my surprise we were in and out in less than 15 minutes but not without me getting a little misty eyed (shh, don’t tell Macs!). Turns out the license looks like just about every other boring legal document. I’m glad I ordered a decorative one few months back since the official one is less than frame worthy.

How was your experience obtaining your marriage license? Was it rather uneventful like ours or did you have an interesting story?

Oooh, pretty license! Ours was only eventful in that we couldn’t find the courthouse, but otherwise it was much more anticlimactic than I thought it was going to be.

Ours wasn’t much more eventful, but we do have a good story out of it!

First, we misunderstood where the county clerk’s office was, and we ended up in the county courthouse. While trying to find the clerk’s office, we ended up in a room that was clearly full of parolee’s doing something that parolee’s do…. Whatever that room was meant for, it was clear that it wasn’t the room for us.

So, after finding a nice security person, we were directed to a building down the block.

After going through security again (And getting flagged for having my cell phone in my purse) we finally found the county clerk’s office on the second floor.

This office clearly hasn’t been updated in a while- it kind of looks like it was once a shiny new mid-century modern style office, but they just left it that way for the next 40 years. It’s dim, old, and not at all the happy place I had expected.

And then there was “The Lady”. We didn’t catch her name, but I’m guessing it’s Debbie Downer. She didn’t smile, didn’t seem excited for us…. nothing.

She just asked the appropriate questions, handed us our HIV pamplet (YEAH!) and then printed out our paperwork and sent us on our way.

I LOVE that license!!! I’m excited to go to the courthouse to pick up our official one (though I know it’s ugly since I was the witness for my sister’s and signed her ugly one).

Woohooo! Congrats, I wonder if we have the option for a fancy one or not. Is that a state or county thing?

I really like the idea of using your own custom certificate/license! But, how does it work? Do you bring it in with you to the clerk’s office and they do the signatures on it then? Or is it just a novelty certificate that you fill out on your own time? Thanks!

We literally went to get ours immediately after my Aunt’s funeral so it was very anti-climatic to say the least. But it was one thing checked off the list!

@CurlyRN: I think it’s a county thing. If you look at Mrs. Mouse & Mrs. Hyena’s posts (about getting their marriage licenses) they have different ones.

@Leia: The one I bought is just for us to display in our home. We’ll have our officiant sign/fill it out on the day though!

@Miss Pony: Tell me about it!

Wait… taking a photo inside is forbidden? I went to the same building/office to get our marriage license and totally took photos inside!!

Crosssing my fingers for “uneventful”. Everytime I go downtown in Chicago for something (license, birth certificate, SSN card), all hell seems to break loose.

@Miss Kettle: Yeah, something tells me changing my name is going to be a lot more time consuming!
