My biggest loves in life are Law & Order: SVU, Community (the show, not the concept, although I like that, too), ice cream, white cheddar popcorn, beer, hiking, knitting, decorating, writing, being outside, spending time with friends and family and musical theater. Mr. Cannon is pretty sweet, too. We've had a lot of fun traveling and having adventures all over the country, but have finally moved back near our hometown to settle down. We're planning a low-key, colorful, fun wedding and an awesome-to-the-max reception.

The Trends: To Embrace or Shun

August 30th, 2011 @ 8:14 am by Mrs. Cannon

Part of being a bride in the internet age is spending way too much time mulling over other people’s weddings. Sure, in the past you could skim magazines for ideas, but the internet has brought us wedding blogs, wedding planning websites, and images from photographers’ websites. It’s become easier than ever for brides to find things we like from weddings past and incorporate them into our own weddings.

It comes down to deciding what works for your wedding and what says “you”. I know you’re all dying to know which trends the Cannons have embraced and which have we shunned. And most importantly, why? So, here we go!

Embraced- Mustaches. My love affair with fake mustaches started four years ago. Back before Cherry Bomb came around, Mr. Cannon and I were big fans of hitting the town with our friends and drinking at the bars. The downside of that (other than making my liver sad and a fool of myself) was my drunken online shopping problem. I would often get home and buy something completely stupid that I found hilarious at the time. The next morning, while still finding my purchase hilarious, I was not keen on the actual money I spent on it. One of these purchases was for two packs of fake mustaches, a package of astronaut ice cream, and a DVD of Pete’s Dragon.

However, I always made the best of these purchases.

I started finding reasons to wear my fake mustaches. (I also ate the astronaut ice cream and who doesn’t like Pete’s Dragon? Not the worst purchase I’ve ever made.) Anyway, I used them when I needed a clever disguise:

And made my family wear them when they came to visit me in Arizona:

And have used them randomly for fun over the years, so I think it will be fitting to have them at my wedding.

Shunned- Although we will be having mustaches, we will not be having the ubiquitous photo booth. There’s really no reason, as I think photo booths are pretty fun, but it was something I didn’t really want to put time into. Also, as fun as I think the DIY photo booths are, I don’t think I’d want to do one unless it was with an actual booth, and that wasn’t in the budgeting cards.

Embraced- DIY elements. Obviously, a big part of it is money saving, but I have to say the real reason is the personalization. I’ve been doing a lot of complaining about the work I’ve been doing for this wedding, but I would probably go crazy if I wasn’t doing it. I love it (when I’m not hating it). I’m sure all you other DIY brides know what I’m saying.

Shunned- Shabby chic styling. I think this is really pretty for the right bride, but it is SO not my style. As fun as I think it would be to do the DIY elements for it, it has nothing to do with me or Mr. Cannon, and wouldn’t really be “us”. Luckily, it looks like I’ll get to help with a country-style wedding for my sister next year!

Embraced- Colored crinoline. This was a pretty easy decision for me. I used to tell my mom I was going to get married in a hot pink wedding dress when I was a teenager. I’m sure she’s delighted that I changed my mind to a white dress, but I’m keeping the bright pink somewhere.

Shunned- Colored shoes. I actually thought I would get colored shoes in the beginning, and even as recently as my shoes blog post a few weeks ago. Ultimately, I ended with white shoes. And they are the Seychelles I mentioned in that blog post in case you’re dying to know. They look pretty amazing with the dress. I am considering getting some pink laces for them, however, after it was suggested in the comments by a particularly thoughtful guest poster. (And even stranger, by Mr. Cannon out of nowhere.)

Embraced- The dessert table. Mr. Cannon doesn’t like cake, even for his birthday. His mom usually makes him a pie and I usually make him a cheesecake. So, it just makes sense for us to offer alternatives to the cake.

Shunned- The candy buffet. I would actually love to participate in a candy buffet at someone else’s wedding since I am a big fan of candy, and it would fit in with our colorful theme. I just think it would be overkill with the dessert table.

These are just a few of the wedding trends out there right now. I think it’s really important to find the inspiration that speaks to you and do what you will with it. This is what I’m doing, which trends have inspired you?

I love this post! I so on board still with the whole mustache thing. I can’t get enough - I think it is too funny. We are doing a lot of the trends you mentioned but you are right and you have to be careful you aren’t saying yes to everything and choosing those things that are “you.”

Pete’s Dragon!! Ahh the memories.
Let’s see…we embraced the cupcakes, DIY, signature drink, creative table numbers (farm animals!!), and first look, but shunned colorful shoes, photobooth, bunting, and candy or fixings buffet. We did have a buffet dinner though!

Yeaaaaah, coloured crinoline. Jumped on the coloured shoe bandwagon, as well as little invite things like RSVP wording (which you have the same). We also found ourselves liking mismatched bridesmaids, DIY elements, diamond rings… (yeah, those are uh.. Common).

Sometimes I feel like we’re just copying things from other people, but it really is doing what you like and how you want. I guess when I think about it, it’s not like we’re ripping anyone’s wedding off. :)

OMG Pete’s Dragon, love that movie! I’m also on the dessert buffet wagon, we like options for our sweets!

Hahaha, I love all of these, Cannon! And your mustache pictures are awesome! I, too, am incorporating them into our wedding, though we will be having a photo booth. I totally hear you on the “I love this project but I’m so not up for it front!”

Sooo many trends that I have fallen for since wedding planning began. I admire you for knowing which ones didn’t fit you and which ones you really wanted to have.

No rainbow candy buffet? Say it isn’t so.. everytime I look at candy (hoping to find my colors but never having success) I dream of the possibilities of your rainbow candy selections next to the rainbow cake. Sigh..ok I understand it’s not my wedding… I’ll focus my excitement on the pink peeking from under your dress (I had an image of the bm dress from confessions of a shopaholic when I first read colored crinoline) and awaiting what other DIY treats are comming :) I think (probably due to your color scheme and cherry bomb) I’m more excited about your wedding than my own! :)

your mustache pictures are pretty awesome! I like your post! There are so many DIY’s, designs, inspirations saved in my computer. I am in the process of going thru all my saved folder! whew! sometimes, I really want it all! but reality strikes, have to choose, what is really “me”. :)

Haha! I love your description of what you ordered online. I can totally relate. With all of this. I had to seriously rein myself in to stop our wedding from looking like a carnival - which, while many brides can pull off trends galore - I cannot, so mine WOULD LOOK LIKE A CARNIVAL if I incorporated every trend.

I love moustaches! I really can’t seem to get enough and I love that they are such a pop culture hit right now.

I’m incorporating so many trends, but I love them all so! If I could have about 10 weddings I might be able to fit in everything I would really like to have.

If you ordered astronaut ice cream then you are a very smart lady! I consider that money well spent! We nixed the photo booth too. At first I really, really wanted one but then I didn’t want to put the time or effort in. Plus I heard it takes away from the dance floor which was way more important to us.

I love this post. I may do a similar post when it gets close to my wedding and more details are finalized. I can’t wait to see if you go with the pink laces!
