Veil Alternatives

August 30th, 2011 @ 2:43 pm by Mrs. High Wire

There’s been quite an evolution in terms of what sort of veil I wanted to wear for the wedding day.

Originally, my plans were to go with the birdcage veil:

But once I tried it on, I felt like it got sort of lost next to my blonde hair and I didn’t like how close it sat on my face. It was super itchy and uncomfortable.

I couldn’t find any other styles that worked with my dress and was starting to give up on the idea of a veil entirely. The price tag on the available veils at local bridal salons was also a huge hindrance. $200 for some tulle? No thanks.

Then I fell head over heels in love with this:

But silk tulle with lace edging was a little (i.e. WAY) out of my price range, and I don’t think the queen would have loaned me that Cartier crown.

I found a cheapie $15 veil online on Amazon and decided I would just order that as the wedding date grew closer and be done with it. It didn’t make my excited at all, but at least it was crossed off the list.

But then I started eyeing pictures that put a little spin on the traditional veil:

And then, a few days ago, I saw this:

So here’s the deal: I feel like a should wear a veil, because that is just what’s done. But, I don’t really want to wear a veil at all. The concept of having my face totally covered while I might be potentially nervous and breathing heavily sounded like a claustrophobic disaster. And I’m not really digging on clipping something on the back of my head just so I have a veil on. I’d much rather wear something a little different. Plus, there are so many fun alternatives to the veil:

How about a nature inspired headpiece?

Or that absolutely beautiful retro headband that was handmade for her by a friend.

A simple flower makes a beautiful statement.

Or no veil at all! Who needs em?!

What kind of veil are you wearing? If you’re not wearing one, what are you wearing instead?

I went with the birdcage, because (like you) I always imagined myself wearing one, and my Mom graciously gifted me HER birdcage from when my parents got married to take apart and use for mine. I definitely feel you when you say it feels stiff and close to your face; it took quite some time but I finally was able to get the shape i wanted.

Beautiful! :) I’m sure you’ll find what you heart desires.

I’m wearing a vintage-styled tulle birdcage veil that has lace and satin flowers on top. I didn’t want to wear a chapel, fingertip, or cathedral veil because of my petite frame (I didn’t like any of them on me when I tried it).

I was going to go with a laurel leaf looking crown with flowers, but I really wanted a little bit of a veil just because. It felt like me, so I went with it and scored an amazing deal from eBay on the tulle blusher I’ve been dreaming of!

You know, I originally didn’t want a veil. I wanted a bling-y hair flower. I still think I should get one, wedding or not!

I knew from the start that I was a no-veil bride.

While i liked the retro look of a birdcage veil, DH said he didn’t want me to have something over my face.

And while I did see a couple silk tulle veils that set my heart aflutter (Twigs and Honey had one that was quite lovely, but over $200) I just couldn’t justify spending that much on a piece of fabric.

I ended up going with a silk chiffon flower- I wear flowers in my hair fairly often, and I love the look of it, so it was very fitting to my style.

No veil for me! I’m kind of atypical bride and like I go against the crowd anyway :) I actually purchased two adorable flower headbands from Claires, BOGO for $7. The flowers were ivory lace which matches my dress, and had a simple rhinestone in the middle. Totally cute! I chopped them off the elastic, sewed them onto two combs I bought at Michael’s Crafts for $3, and voila, affordable flower headpiece for $10! The ones in the bridal stores are outrageous! I almost laughed in the girl’s face when she showed me some for $75.

I have a simple ribbon edge elbow length veil that I am only wearing for the ceremony. I have never really wanted one but felt like I was supposed to wear one. I may not even wear it. But I am wearing 2 small flowers in my hair that I bought at H&M for like $3!

I am a no veil girl myself. I will probably do a “blingy” headband or a pretty little flower. FI is worried he may fumble with a veil.

I knew i wanted a short train for our reception later at the farm. But I wanted a train for the church ceremony. SO a cathedral veil works! Bu tI love all your alternatives. I’m trying to find something for the reception for my hair.

I will not use a veil, just a headpiece since its a civil ceremony. I think veils are for church.

All my best to you!

I wanted a veil but I also love the idea of a flower. So, for my ceremony I am wearing a veil that hits just below the end of my corrset back and then for the reception I am taking of the veil and wearing a flower in my hair to make me feel more like it is time to party!

I’m a no veil-er…I don’t 100% know what will be atop my head yet, however. That beaded band is ridiculously pretty!

I am not wearing a veil. I just felt silly wearing one. Some women look beautiful in them but I just did not want to feel stupid on my wedding! I am wearing a crystal ribbon headband. I am happy with my decision. Some people seem surprised when I say I am not wearing a veil but my fiance doesn’t care and I think you should do what makes you feel beautiful!

As you know, I wore a fun hat with a very small veil. it looked very pretty and very me - I am a hat person! I know that you will look great in what ever you choose — and hey if you want to borrow the hat it is yours!

I’m not a veil bride, either. I don’t like having something cover my face and that can get in the way. Super annoying thing happened. Went to David’s Bridal to try on dresses. Consultant pulled a veil for me. I put it on (only to confirm that I don’t like them), took it off, and mentioned to her that I am not wearing a veil. She insisted on me trying different veils with each dress. Umm, no. How bouts you listen to me. The bride.
