Mrs. Parasol, San Ramon, California Age and Occupation: 25, Non-profit writer, editor, and blogger Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Law school student Engagement Date: December 19th, 2010 Wedding Date: September 2011 Venue: Bent Creek Winery (Livermore, California); Reception: Family Residence (San Ramon, California) About Me: I am a California girl at heart. I love the outdoors, sunny days at the beach, and hiking in the woods and mountains. I also love good books and am fresh from completing my Master's degree in English and Comparative Literature in New York City. Living in NYC was an amazing experience, and while I'm glad to be back on the West Coast, I'm also thankful that my two years back East gave me an opportunity to explore new places, make new friends, and indulge my passion for Broadway shows. Oh, and I received a pretty awesome proposal from Mr. Parasol in Central Park. Above all else, Mr. Parasol is my biggest cheerleader and my best friend. But even though I'm thrilled to be marrying him, I wasn't always totally on board with this whole wedding thing and at first, I wanted to run off and elope. I've finally been convinced to throw the wedding I never thought I wanted, and so now I'm busy planning an intimate September wedding filled with DIY details. Along the way, I'm slowly learning to appreciate, perhaps even love the wedding planning process.

Tan Lines–I’ve Got ‘Em!

August 31st, 2011 @ 5:35 pm by Mrs. Parasol

In spite of my best efforts this summer, I have acquired two small, but noticeable tan lines on my chest.

I know they could be a lot worse, but I kind of really hate them, especially because I tried so hard to not get tan lines when I went on vacation this summer. My bathing suit and all my dresses have straps, but I made sure to take them off and tuck them away whenever I went out into the sun. These little beauties are the result of my bathing suit straps starting to peek back out again without me noticing.

The problem is that you can just see them in my wedding dress, and as small as they are, I really don’t want any pictures of me with splotchy, uneven, untanned skin. This is not the look I’m going for:

So hive, what would you do? I’m seriously at a loss for the best way to go about evening out my tan lines, and I would love your input! The way I see it, these are my options:

  • Spend an afternoon in the sun in a strapless top
  • Invest in a bronzer or self-fake tan (I’m still not sure of the difference, if there is one)
  • Suck it up and get a spray tan

I’ve been using Jergen’s Natural Skin Glow like it’s going out of style.

Unfortunately, though, this stuff just isn’t cutting it, and I don’t know what to do. I’ve had tan lines before, but I’ve never had an occasion like my wedding day that absolutely necessitates getting ride of them. So if any of you have experience with this or wisdom to offer, I would so appreciate hearing from you! I need your recommendations!

Anyone else trying to get rid of your tan lines? Let’s commiserate!

I’m sure your makeup artist would be able to blend them in for you!

Spray tan! I’ve had one and it looked great. By now there shouldn’t be very many orange versions.

I have SERIOUS tan lines (sports bra tan lines… so there’s no way of evening them out without some serious boob + exercise = pain) and asked for help on the Bee.

To the rescue, man! A couple people suggested the L’Oreal Sublime Bronze sunless tanning towelettes and it is working miracles. Last Sunday, I took the little towel thing and carefully applied it everywhere my tan wasn’t. I made myself a couple of subtle streaks (and my strap-line wasn’t quite covered yet) so I did it again last night super cognizant of where I’d missed before. Got my sock tan, too, this time. The improvement is IMMENSE. Basically I’m going to do this twice more before the wedding since it says on the box to continue 1-2x per week once you’re the color you want.

I would 100% recommend the towelette sunless tanning thing. It’s slightly tricky because you can’t see where you’ve put it, but it takes long enough to try that if you’re in good light you can see where you’re dark, where you’re pale, and where your skin is already wet from applying it.

For the marine corps ball last year I had tan lines as well as my face is lighter than my arms and my arms are dakrer than my shoulders and those would all be showing. I sprayed this stuff on evenly everywhere and let dry before putting on my dress. Worked great. No streaks, not thick, no mess. :)

Spray tan! Fo sho! If your not sure about how you’ll like it, I’d suggest doing it well before your wedding to test it out. I think a professional, airbrushed (NOT the automatic spray booth, but an actual person with a spray gun) is the ultimate way to go.

I tan fairly quickly so I would just go outside in a bandeau top for a while but if you don’t tan too well than maybe spray tan or those L’Oreal Sublime Bronze sunless tanning towelettes already recommended.
Whatever you choose- try it well before your wedding to make sure you like the results!

If it makes you feel better I hardly noticed the tan lines. I had to stare really hard at the picture to see them and if people are looking that closely they need to back up!

I agree with Pony that they’re hard to see. But whatever you choose, do it quickly in case you have to try a Plan B.

They’re hard to see, honestly!! And I don’t think it’ll matter… but this is coming from someone who looked like this on her wedding day ;) http://www-static.weddingbee.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/12/witness.jpg

If it’s photos you’re worried about, I bet you could ask your photog to retouch the ones you plan to frame or include in albums. As far as in person, I think the other gals’ suggestion of a spray tan or makeup artist’s help!

I had a whacked out t-shirt tan and I actually had a full-body scrub and followed it up with the build a tan moisturiser every day. Seems to have worked quite well. Otherwise, makeup artist should definitely be able to sort that out for you!

Go to the drug store and buy a product called “Airbrush Legs” by Sally Hansen. It’s wonderful!!!! I use it all summer and I use it all over my body, not just on my legs. It’s perfect for covering up tan lines and it’s got a bit of sparkle to it. It also comes in different shades. Good luck!

Get a spray tan - the airbrush kind! I’m a red head and will definitely be getting a spray tan probably 2 days before my wedding day. Several friends of mine have gotten spray tans for their weddings either because of a general ghostly skin tone or because of tan lines, and each of my friends was SUPER happy with the airbrush tanning process (despite the awkwardness of the tanning girl seeing your boobs). Let us know what you do, good luck!

Miss P, i had to squint super hard to see your tan lines, which is a great thing, because you’ll be able to either tan them away or do a light spray tan-y thing to make them vanish. yay!
