Mrs. Cannon, Toledo, OHAge and Occupation: 27, Financial AnalystFiance's Age and Occupation: 28, AssemblerEngagement Date: February 28, 2011Wedding Date: September 2011Venue: Epworth UMC & Ward PavilionAbout Me: I'm the curious combination of being a go-with-the-flow, laid back, obsessive planner. I try desperately to stay as busy as possible at all times (and am succeeding big time right now!) My biggest loves in life are Law & Order: SVU, Community (the show, not the concept, although I like that, too), ice cream, white cheddar popcorn, beer, hiking, knitting, decorating, writing, being outside, spending time with friends and family and musical theater. Mr. Cannon is pretty sweet, too. We've had a lot of fun traveling and having adventures all over the country, but have finally moved back near our hometown to settle down. We're planning a low-key, colorful, fun wedding and an awesome-to-the-max reception.
If you’re anything like me, you were excited to find Project Runway’s new season starting up a few weeks ago. Bridesmaid Rifle and MOH Bombshell share my love for the show, and especially for mentor Tim Gunn.
I used that picture because Tim is doing his, “I’m concerned” face, and I’m pretty sure that’s the one he’d be giving me if he were looking over my wedding plans about now.
“Miss Cannon,” he would say, “I really think this could be amazing, but you don’t have much time left.” Then he would point to my closet full of half completed projects and say, “This concerns me.” I would give him a half worried, half hopeful look, then he would give me a squeeze on the shoulder and an encouraging smile. “Make it work!”
So, in an attempt to take advice from my favorite man (other than Mr. Cannon, of course), I have been trying to make it work the past few weeks by having Rifle over on Thursday nights for wedding crafting, beer, snacks, and of course, watching the new season of Project Runway.
Mrs. Hyena, College Station, TXAge and Occupation: 23, Marketing SpecialistFiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Aerospace Engineering Grad StudentEngagement Date: January 8, 2010Wedding Date: May 2011Venue: Downtown 202About Me: I'm a Texas girl who met my future hubby in high school, then headed up to Oklahoma for a college education (BOOMER SOONER!) before moving back to the Lone Star State to be with him. I love reading and recycling, Photoshop and reality TV, making lame jokes and then laughing at them, quoting movies, and Mr. Hyena most of all. I'm perpetually early and I like to get things accomplished. When my cat meows at me, I meow back. We're planning a laid-back, unintentionally DIY wedding with a cocktail-party vibe, and can't wait to celebrate our nuptials with our nearest and dearest!
Before I get to the very end of the night, I wanted to post just a few of our little details. You can see a lot of our details in previous posts, but here are some that I didn’t include already.
Miss Kettle, Chicago, ILAge and Occupation: 26, Non-Profit Donor Resource CoordinatorFiance's Age and Occupation: 27, Musician & TeacherEngagement Date: May 29, 2011Wedding Date: February 2012Venue: Patrick C. Haley Mansion, Joliet, ILAbout Me: I'm a city girl who loves a good escape, so I'm planning a Chicago wedding outside of the city. I've been described as a quirky yet down-to-earth drama queen who loves fiercely. I used to be a scientist, but now I'm learning to navigate the world of non-profit organizations. I love cooking, blogging, shopping, and music, and movies (Hans Zimmer is my favorite movie composer). Mr. Kettle and I had a short courtship and now we have a happy home with our cat-who-thinks-she's-people, Belle. We spend our days and nights with good food, live music, video games, family, and friends. Our wedding has become this wonderful excuse to bring together hundreds of people we can't bear to be without.
Hive, I have a confession. I’m crafty, but my intentions are not pure. When I first discovered Weddingbee, the blogger in me was dying to become a part. I wanted to be a bee blogger so bad.
Knowing how Weddingbee is so full of DIY projects, I figured I’d have to do a couple and get them on my blog so when I applied I would be a more appealing candidate. The benefit of these first couple of projects to my actual wedding was very very secondary. Whew! I feel good for getting that out.
I saw, on the lovely world wide web, lots o’ DIY projects of handmade things for the bride and groom to hold while posing for pictures. Some say “thank you” and then are used for special-order thank you cards for after the wedding.
I loved this idea and thought I could incorporate it into something fun as one of my first DIY projects. I wanted to make a banner for our STDs (hehe, still funny even though bee after bee has immaturity moments with this).
Bunting seemed like the easiest thing to do, so I went with it. A trip to Michaels secured all the supplies. And a large dining room table courtesy of Mema Kettle supplied the work area. I went to Michaels to pick up supplies for this and my other DIY project (a “thank you” wreath).
When I got back to the house, I set to work. It was a lot of steps and, because I was working on both projects at once, it took all day. Plus I ran out of ribbon and had to take FNIL Tiny (’cause she’s tiny) with me to Wal-Mart to find more. But FSIL Hon helped out tremendously. When I told her I was taking pictures in hopes of blogging about it in the future, she refused to let more than her hand be photographed, but I will get more shots the next time she’s back stateside.
That’s FNIL Tiny. She’s waaaay high up in the tree in front of Mema Kettle and Kettle Dad’s house. She’s very helpful and she’s going to make a great junior bridesmaid!
Mrs. Funnel Cake, Zürich, Switzerland/Columbus, OhioAge and Occupation: 24, Visual Communication DesignerFiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Application EngineerEngagement Date: May 30, 2010Wedding Date: October 2011Venue: Catholic church followed by a botanical conservatoryAbout Me: I'm an American designer who moved to Switzerland for love after a fairytale beginning at the top of the Eiffel Tower. I love travel, photography, museums, learning German so I can speak with my mother-in-law, cooking (eating), cuddling, and I'm not afraid to try something new even if it terrifies me. My Swiss/Brazilian man and I are both down to earth people planning a traditional Catholic wedding in my hometown with some quirky cultural exceptions to reflect our different backgrounds. We look forward to celebrating with friends and family from all over the world in a classic, sophisticated fusion of heritage and love.
When our invitations arrived from the printer and we finally had all the components to put them together, it pained me not to show the hive. But at the same time, Mr. Funnel Cake was flipping out a lil bit to get the Brazilian and Swiss invites out… so we slapped these Swiss babies together and sent the suckers out one day after getting them.
Now, with all invites out in the mail, it’s time to show these off to the hive! Read more…
Miss Ticket, Riverside, CAAge and Occupation: 25, Executive AssistantFiance's Age and Occupation: 24, HVAC TechnicianEngagement Date: November 14, 2010Wedding Date: October 2011Venue: Crestmore ManorAbout Me: I'm a lifelong So Cal gal, a chocoholic, a closet gamer, and a television enthusiast (love me some Vampire Diaries!) who adores playing in the kitchen and lives in flip flops. Mr. Ticket and I are best known for singing and dancing in the car, our World of Warcraft addiction, adoring food, crane game playing, and our general homebody ways. Oh, and GO STEELERS!
Going dress shopping with Mama Ticket was quite the experience. I would be remiss if I didn’t tell you that it was in fact the most painful wedding task we have conquered to date. That being said, it did not start out this way. We did things a little unconventionally with the Ticket wedding. Mama Ticket insisted that FMIL Ticket could pick her dress first and then she would find one to match. (Mama Ticket wanted to wait as long as possible to find a dress while trying to lose weight, and she didn’t want FMIL to have to wait on her.) I was perfectly fine with this arrangement.
And thus FMIL Ticket went out and found (in my opinion) a very beautiful and perfect-for-the-wedding dress. She will be wearing this beauty (minus the one awkward sleeve):
Mrs. Hermit Crab, New York, NYAge and Occupation: 24, Youth Director soon to be Grad StudentFiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Medical Student - soon to be Surgery ResidentEngagement Date: October 11, 2008Wedding Date: June 2010Venue: New York Botanical GardenAbout Me: I love all things food, books, our furbaby, Rashi, and adventures with my amazing fiance (oh, and saving the world!). This summer I will not only be a bride, but a bridesmaid, officiant, and attendee as well---it's all about weddings in my life right now, full of so many exciting moments and projects. We're planning a fab New York City wedding weekend full of family, love and lots of color!
Hello there, Hive! I have missed posting here regularly, but I have been popping around the boards just to make sure I don’t miss anything. I wanted to jump in with a post about a Jewish tradition that I haven’t yet talked about here, and one that I think many people will like.
Every year on the Jewish calendar, is a relatively unknown holiday called “Tu B’Av,” or the 15th of the Hebrew month Av. It occurs in the summertime, usually in August. This year, it falls on the eve of the 14th and until sundown on the 15th of August (and the dates almost never line up like this!). Historically, the holiday was known as a day of matchmaking, when women would dress all in white, and dance outside the city walls, and choose who they wanted to marry. It has been said that “There were no better (i.e. happier) days for the people of Israel than the Fifteenth of Av…since on these days the daughters of Israel/Jerusalem go out dressed in white and dance in the vineyards. What were they saying: Young man, consider whom you choose (to be your wife).”
Today, it something like Valentine’s Day in the Jewish community—a day to celebrate love and relationships, and the magnitude of choosing your partner, and may include dancing and singing together into the night. Read more…
Ms. Sloth, PhiladelphiaAge and Occupation: 35, Account Manager and Fashion BloggerFiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Design AdminEngagement Date: December 25, 2009Wedding Date: May 2011Venue: Bartram's GardenAbout Me: I'm an internet junkie and music snob with a good eye for a bargain. I couldn't live without thrift store shopping, cheeseburgers, sushi, Coke Zero, websites devoted to silly photos of baby animals, Photoshop, and Mr. Sloth. Speaking of which, he and I are a pair of goofball homebody nerds who love our beagle (the most ridiculously adorable dog EVER) to an embarrassing degree. We're planning a low-key and intimate yet festive and quirky outdoor wedding with DIY details and deeply personal touches, and it's all taking place in the city where we fell in love and call home: Philadelphia.
Mrs. Hot Wings, Chicago/San DiegoAge and Occupation: 28, ProfessorFiance's Age and Occupation: 32, InstructorEngagement Date: December 20, 2008Wedding Date: August 2010Venue: Ocean View Villas/Jasmine Seafood RestaurantAbout Me: I am a psychology grad student living in Chicago and planning my wedding to a fellow psych grad student. I am a Sunny So-Cal bred gal who trudged across the country to follow her love of psychology and ended up finding a partner in the process. I am overly passionate about anything I involve myself with. I am an activist, a foodie, a reality TV watching junkie, an over-analyzer, a photography obsesser, and am utterly cheesy to the core. This is a story of what happens when a boy and a girl meet, fall in love over academic dorkiness, and a shared love for life. We (mostly I) are planning our semi-destination wedding in my hometown of San Diego. We are excited to bring our families and friends together from across our lifespans to celebrate our future in a grand 400+ person culturally blended affair!
After Papa Hot Wings gave his opening speech, we ate a little and got dancing. Papa Hot Wings and I danced to “Gracie” by Ben Folds. He literally picked this song because of the first two lines.
“You can’t fool me, I saw you when you came out
You got your momma’s taste but you got my mouth”
My mom loved these two lines as well. They think it really represents what happened to me. I like my chic style like Mama. Papa can be a slob. And I am pretty radical in my thinking and debate politics with my family a lot like Papa does. Mama isn’t into the debating so much. Read more…
Miss Doily, Cedar Rapids, IowaAge and Occupation: 25, Autism Paraeducator/ StudentFiance's Age and Occupation: 27, Freelance Writer/ PublisherEngagement Date: August 27th, 2010Wedding Date: March 2012Venue: Father’s Vineyard Church/ A Touch of Class Banquet CenterAbout Me: I’m an Iowan girl with a deep love of Harry Potter, classic movies, cardigans, and Post-Its. My type-A Virgo tendencies often cause me to drive my laid-back college sweetheart fiance batty with lists and PowerPoint presentations. I love to be crafty and do things myself, which explains why my two crazy kittens often will prance around the house covered in glitter and ribbons. When I am not bogged down with work, school, or wedding planning, I like to travel to visit my expansive family and have wild adventures with my best friends. After a rollercoaster ride of a love story, I’m ready to take that final plunge, marry the love of my life, and become a Mrs.!
I first off want to apologize for being MIA on the blogging front this week. But I promise, promise, promise you it was for a good reason! I would never let the hive hang without there being a huge, life-changing, reason behind the neglect. This week I was doing a little of this:
Mrs. Teaspoon, Sydney, AustraliaAge and Occupation: 27, Medical ScientistFiance's Age and Occupation: 30, BankerEngagement Date: June 4, 2010Wedding Date: September 2011Venue: St Aloysius' College, Milson's PointAbout Me: I am a mad scientist who enjoys swimming at the beach in summer and skiing powder in winter. Our favourite times together are spent with the sand between our toes, cooking up a storm, re-watching and re-reading every Harry Potter ever made, and spending time with our dear friends and family! We have travelled the world together in our 6 years of dating, from Paris, to Thailand, to Las Vegas, and we are tackling the many challenges of planning our special day the best way we know how---together!
I have become one of those women. You know the ones—they cry when they watch the dog-food commercial on TV, they cry when they hear their wedding song, they cry when the jeweller’s wife tells them they are going to make a beautiful bride, they cry when it rains and their Ugg boots get wet, and they cry when they don’t cut the onions quite straight. (OK, so that last one I’m going to blame on the onions.)
How on earth am I going to make it through our wedding day?
Why, after all these years of never crying, am I all of a sudden so emotional? Is it a sign of getting old? Is it possible that all those years of not crying are all of a sudden bubbling over when insignificant events happen, like Dumbledore dying or getting to the end of Marley & Me and knowing what was going to happen and “skipping over” that part?
So, in an effort to not be a bubbling mess on our wedding day and avoid a number of pictures with me and my ugly-cry face, I have decided to make a conscious effort to embrace the emotion in me and not turn up with an ugly-cry face a la Dawson:
Mrs. Elephant, Dallas, TXAge and Occupation: 27, Financial Operations AnalystFiance's Age and Occupation: 27, IT Student/Store ManagerEngagement Date: March 29, 2009Wedding Date: April 2011Venue: The Tribute Golf ClubAbout Me: I'm a Philly native creating roots deep in the heart of Texas. I might be a little obsessed capturing those Kodak moments of anything and everything (mainly on vacations). I've become more of a gamer thanks to Mr. Elephant, who I met online and can't wait to spend the rest of my life with. We are planning a wedding based on our favorite colors, blue and green, with a travel theme for 150 of our closest friends and family. Hopefully our long (2-year) engagement won't kill me!
With all of my organization, I thought we were beyond prepared for our wedding. Everything was packed, labeled and ready to go. The one thing that I forgot was probably one of the most important things of the night our marriage license.
Lynn’s 3rd photographer Audrey was a lifesaver and took my keys to go back to our apartment to get it. I later found out that she had to make two trips since no one listened to me when I said she would have to go through the garage because the front door was double locked.
I gave Audrey a huge hug when she got back
With the marriage license in hand, we headed to the pub to have it signed by Revered Rosset.
Miss Snapdragon, Chicago/DallasAge and Occupation: 32,Associate ProducerFiance's Age and Occupation: 33, Lighting DesignerBlogging Since: November 14, 2008Engagement Date: January 1, 2011Wedding Date: March 2012Venue: Marie GabrielleAbout Me: Voracious reader of short stories, Russian literature, National Geographic and Cosmo. I'm a GENIUS at spicing up Weight Watchers recipes and a pathological cheater at board games. I run a slow marathon, but my feet are learning to move faster. Mornings aren't my thing, but I can night owl with the best of them. Don't tempt me with your Cherry Cokes---I'm trying to quit. Tomorrow. Or never.
Bees, I went bridesmaid dress shopping this weekend, and I learned things. Lots of things. Like organza is not the same as chiffon. Beading = expensive. Proper lining is important.
I also learned that I can’t take these people anywhere:
This is Goober and Wrigley-T. They’re crazy for fashion.
Thank you, David’s Bridal, your patience knows no bounds.
Mrs. Seal, San FranciscoAge and Occupation: 25, Personal AssistantFiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Sales and Support SpecialistEngagement Date: December 12, 2009Wedding Date: November 2011Venue: Sts Peter and Paul Church/The Bently ReserveAbout Me: I am a goofy, wannabe crafty, well-intentioned Renaissance Woman (OK, perhaps "aimless wanderer" is a more aptly suited term for me, but hopefully you get the point)—basically I dabble in just about everything and pride myself in such. Without warning, I occasionally breakout into soulful improvised songs and interpretive dances and there's just no stopping me! As so many others before me, planning our wedding has unearthed a deep, intense passion for all things bridal and I secretly fear the day it will come to an end. Mr. Seal and I are quite the pair and life with him by my side is extremely rewarding—I am so thankful to have found him. Together we are planning a black-tie San Francisco affair for 250—light on the stuffiness and with lots of extra Seal-y flair.
Alternatively titled, “Things I Stole From Other Bees”
Things have been busy over here at studio Seal, hive. We’ve reached double digits and kicked into DIY high gear! I mentioned a couple posts ago that I am navigating my way through wedding planning/blogging time management in favor of spending more time with my groom-to-be, and I feel like I’m doing a pretty dandy job so far.
Anyhow, onto the good stuffs.
First up is our lace-wrapped votive candles. I borrowed this project from the ever-so-lovely Miss Macarons and I couldn’t be happier with the results. Not only was it easy as pie and quick to boot, it was affordable too! I followed Miss Macs tutorial to the “T” and purchased my candles from QuickCandles and my lace trim off of eBay. Between the candles and the lace, I spent about $100 for 144 candles (about five per table).
I think the hint of gold in the lace will tie together nicely with our table numbers.
Mrs. Lox, BaltimoreAge and Occupation: 33, Government WorkerFiance's Age and Occupation: 35. IT ConsultantEngagement Date: May 8, 2010Wedding Date: May 2011Venue: Vandiver InnAbout Me: I’m an East Coast gal born and bred and a suburban brat turned city rat for the last year. Now Mr. Lox and I enjoy walking all kinds of places, having the coolest things around in our backyard, and especially our garage parking. I love gadgets, toys, Ben & Jerry’s Chubby Hubby ice cream, monkeys, and our insane cats. I’m a blonde by birth and a redhead by choice. I’m that girl in the cubicle farm with all the cool toys and the file cabinet covered in magnetic poetry. I still use smiley faces in my emails, whether people like it or not. This is not the first rodeo for Mr. Lox nor me. And together, we are planning an intimate afternoon wedding on a budget we can afford by ourselves.
While my makeup was getting finished up, obviously other things were happening too. Vendors were showing up on the scene and doing their thing… most notably my fantastic photographers. The snuck out of the room with my dress and me calling after them “Just don’t get it wet!” You see, there was a 70% chance of severe thunderstorms on our wedding day. So while you may think that is a random declaration, I assure you it made sense at the time.
They laughed and went off to get fantastic pictures like these.
