Losing Those We Love

September 1st, 2011 @ 9:18 am by Mrs. Sunhat

Unfortunately this post bears extremely sad news. On Monday, August 8, 2011, we lost my wonderful grandmother. My heart is still broken, yet I’m comforted knowing she is out of pain and at peace.

I was lucky enough to grow up next door to my fraternal grandparents. In fact, it was their farm we used for our engagement pictures. As a kid, I simply had to take a three-minute walk through the back fields to reach their house. Grandma would always have candy bars in the fridge, and we’d sip on Grandpa’s delicious “iced tea” concoction. (I know it had Tang mixed in there!) My grandparents read to my sister and me all the time and taught us how to become fairly good rummy players. I clearly remember answering my first final Jeopardy! question correctly in their living room. (They were avid viewers.)

While these are memories I will always treasure, one memory I will not have is the two of them being there on my wedding day. Grandpa passed away ten years ago, but I always expected Grandma would be there with us. My heart aches each time I think of how she’ll never see me in my dress or witness our beautiful Mass.
I have no doubt they both will be with me in spirit on that day. I am grateful Grandma was able to meet and get to know Mr. Ball Cap, and she adored him. She was so happy for me and loved that I found a good Catholic/Polish boy! Her faith was the strongest I have ever witnessed. I want to be sure to honor her and my grandfather in the best possible way during our ceremony.

A couple weeks ago we took the time to mourn and honor this amazing woman. She’d give my dupa a swift kick if I didn’t get back into the joy and fun of wedding planning soon. Losing a loved one is never easy, but losing her before one of the most important days in my life magnifies the grief.

I wish I didn’t have to write such a heavy post, and there is no way my words can appropriately convey all I’m feeling, but I know I am not alone. I have an amazing family and an even more amazing fiance that provide a fantastic support system.

To those of you out there who may also be grieving, may your family and faith help you through this difficult time.

Aww, big hugs Sunhat. As someone who went through the same thing recently, I feel your pain. I hope you and your family are coping as well as you are able.

We lost my grandma the year before my wedding, which was not something I was ready for either. She loved the hubs though, and at least she knew I was on my way to marriage with him. We are also Polish, and we shared some of the same memories. She lived 5 blocks from where we did growing up, and she used to watch me and my brother when my parents were working and we weren’t in school. ((HUGS))

Awww, *hugs* dear! I know losing my Grama was the hardest thing I’ve ever experienced. I am also taking comfort in the fact that she will be there in spirit for my wedding.

I am so sorry for your loss. :( I lost both of my maternal grandparents over 10 years ago and yet the loss of them still pains me, especially while planning my wedding. And even moreso because, I made a promise to my Grandmother when I was a teenager that she would be at my wedding someday. But I am wearing her favorite necklace given to her by my Granddad on my big day as a tribute to her. In my mind, I’m keeping my promise in a way. She/they will definitely be there smiling down on my wedding day, just as I know yours will be smiling down on your wedding day too :)

I had a super hard time not having my grandmother with me for my wedding day. I pinned her engagement ring inside the sash on my dress to keep it with me the whole day :).

So sorry for you loss, SH, hang in there.

I’m so sorry for your loss. My grandmom left us years ago but I still will miss her on my special day. I wish she could help me get dressed the day of. I wish I could see her smiling face as I walk down the aisle. Just find a way to honor her at your wedding and know that she will be there with you in spirit along with your grandfather.

My father passed away on August 10th, and it’s hitting me pretty hard that he won’t be walking me down the aisle. I just have to hold my breath and recognize the signs he gives me.

I’m so sorry for your loss, dear!

I unfortunately lost all but one of my grandparents in my youth, and I still get twinges of pain every now and again to think about my Grandma- she practically raised me, but when she passed, I was 14 and didn’t go spend as much time with her as I should have. It makes me feel guilty to this day.

And, while it wasn’t quite the same situation, DH’s grandfather was in the hospital with an infection from a surgery on our wedding day. We’re happy and thankful that he’s now healthy again, but I know it makes my husband sad to look at our photos and see him missing.

I can only imagine what you’re going through.
