Trash the Dress - The Aftermath

While our trash the dress session really didn’t “trash” my dress, I did want to show you the aftermath. Well maybe aftermath is too strong a word; perhaps a better classification would be clean up. :P

Initially when we thought of doing a trash the dress I knew that getting the dress wet wouldn’t cause any damage but the one thing I didn’t think about was the sand. The sand itself really didn’t do any damage either—it just got stuck EVERYWHERE.

You can see how the sand really clung to the dress while it was wet. And yes, some of it came off in the van as it started to dry but there was still a ton left when we got back to the hotel. So, Mr. Meerkat helped me get my sand laden dress into our outdoor shower and wash the saltwater and sand out.

As you can see, I brought back my own little beach. Now you would think that would be the end of the sand, right? Not by a long shot. I must have shook it out more 10 times and a pile of sand came out each time. Eventually I just gave up and put the dress back in the garment bag, sand and all.

When we got it back to Michigan, Mama-In-Law Meerkat took over. Even after two more hand washings the dress still had sand it in. Eventually she had to open the hem of the dress a tiny bit and dump the sand out. While she did get most of it out, you can still see a little bit in the hem when you hold it up to the light. But none of the sand was even noticeable when I wore it for our second reception. I give my dress credit—it came through like a trooper and looked brand spankin’ new. :)

Did you do a trash the dress session? How did your dress come out?

I’m glad it came out for the second reception and I LOVE your trash the dress shoot! It’s amazing how much sand you can pick inside a lacy dress. :)

I wore mine in the ocean as well and it was lace so it collected a lot of sand. My mom took it home and rinsed it out then let it dry outside handing off of the deck for a day (luckily I was not around to see this). Most of the sand shook out once it was dry but she said it had a slight ocean smell so she called the dry cleaners who quoted $200 for a cleaning which we agreed was unecessary. She decided to wash it int eh machine on gentle cycle and it came out good as new. Her logic was that it had already survived salt water so a washing machine would not do more damage and it really din’t ruin any of he lace or beading or anything. Now it sits in its garmet bag.

I think the sand in the dress gives it character =) It would be such a fun reminder of that AWESOME photo session.

@slicey19: I was just talking about dress cleaning earlier today with a coworker. Her mother is a dry cleaner and when her grandkids were ready to take their dress in she saved them major $ by washing the dresses on gentle in one of those huge front loading washers at the laundrymat. (They ran a load of plain white towels & detergent thru first to make sure there was no residue!) My coworker also said that as a standard rule, their business chooses to do it that way because 1.) it is affordable 2.) you have more options for pretreating stains 3.) Delicate beading can/will melt if the temp is too hot (Liability to the cleaner)

Your Mom is a smart smart cookie! :)

I can only imagine! After my bridal portraits there was all this super-fine grass in my dress, and my aunt pretty much freaked. out. Sand has to be a NIGHTMARE!

Pesky sand! Uhmmmm, I haven’t cleaned my dress yet. Still deciding what I want to do with her… another photoshoot, keep or sell. *sigh*
