Miss Kettle, Chicago, IL Age and Occupation: 26, Non-Profit Donor Resource Coordinator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, Musician & Teacher Engagement Date: May 29, 2011 Wedding Date: February 2012 Venue: Patrick C. Haley Mansion, Joliet, IL About Me: I'm a city girl who loves a good escape, so I'm planning a Chicago wedding outside of the city. I've been described as a quirky yet down-to-earth drama queen who loves fiercely. I used to be a scientist, but now I'm learning to navigate the world of non-profit organizations. I love cooking, blogging, shopping, and music, and movies (Hans Zimmer is my favorite movie composer). Mr. Kettle and I had a short courtship and now we have a happy home with our cat-who-thinks-she's-people, Belle. We spend our days and nights with good food, live music, video games, family, and friends. Our wedding has become this wonderful excuse to bring together hundreds of people we can't bear to be without.
About Miss Kettle

I’m not a very decisive person. I certainly have my moments where I know right away what I want. That has happened more with this wedding than anything else in my life, which is a relief. However, I do have a problem making firm decisions unless I have a gut reaction.

My gut hasn’t had much to say about what our musical selections should be for the wedding, unfortunately. You’d think that because I’m marrying a musician, the choices would be easier, right? Nope! He and I have complementary, but still quite different tastes in music. We’ve run across a number of options for our wedding music, but we don’t have any choices firmly selected.

I won’t go into overkill and talk about ceremony music and all that (at least not yet), but I will talk about our first dance. It’s a very important moment in the wedding day for Mr. Kettle and I because we break into dance quite often. We were waltzing, literally waltzing, after his gig at the Bucktown Arts Festival last Saturday. Don’t judge us.

We don’t want to do a full choreographed dance because that’s not our style, but the song choice is of the ultimate importance. Don’t ask us if the DJ or the jazz trio will play it because we don’t know yet. Want to hear our options we’ve gone over?

There are these two songs by Brian McKnight on his album Ten that I love. I played the album for Mr. Kettle and he loved it too. We thought one song would be a good option for our first dance. It basically got ruled out later simply because Mr. Kettle couldn’t recall it. Not a good sign for a musician with a great memory. It’s really the lyrics to The Rest of My Life and the pretty music that make it a great first dance candidate, though.

Okay, up next is another song that’s tied into when we first decided we would try dating again. It’s this song by Mayer Hawthorne called Shiny and New. Again, the music and lyrics really just do it for us.

There’s another I wanted, but Mr. Kettle and I never really discussed it. It’s a song by Maxwell call Whenever, Wherever, Whatever. If you’ve ever heard this song, you know why it’d make a great first dance song. Again, great lyrics and music.

Currently, the choice we’re thinking of going with is a jazz song Mr. Kettle and I can’t help but get up and slow dance too if he plays it in our apartment. It’s a lovely song by Roy Hargrove called Trust. The melody just makes me feel romantic and very wedding-like.

The only downside to this selection is that Mr. Kettle feels like it would be a bit, um, on the nose if he, a jazz musician, dances to a jazz song. I saw we should be rebels and do what we want!

He wanted to dance to a Bruce Springsteen song. For a long time, I was fine with it. Then I was finally like… babe, I really, really hate Bruce Springsteen. Can we pick a song we BOTH like? So we picked our song. I don’t know why this wasn’t an obvious choice from the start, but… it took us a while to get there. It’s “Everything Is Different Now” by Don Henley. The lyrics are us… to a tee.

LOVE Brian McKnight and Maxwell, Miss K. But you two have such awesome music taste, i’m sure any of these will be amazing.

Ours was decided without questions - “By Your Side” by Sade. it was the soundtrack of our first months together as a couple and no other song came close. :)

i’ve never heard Hargrove before. that song is beautiful. “Whenever Wherever Whatever” is a favorite, and, as far as Brian McKnight goes, i am loyal to “Let Me Love You” and couldn’t play anything else if i ever decided to play him. songs that define what you think about the relationship are great, but i really appreciate songs that remind you of a time. that makes me really like the hawthorne one even more!

gahhh, decisions! my FI likes a song and then changes his mind 3 months later. that’s a problem for a seriously long engagement. now, i’m not asking again until the week of the wedding so he can’t change his mind! silly guy.

You walts with you fiancé, I can’t tell you how jealous I am right now, that must be the cutest thing i’ve heard.
As for the song, I’ve always believed it has to be something meaningful, like if you have a song that reminds you of each other, so I love the ‘Shiny and new’ idea, and the lyrics just fits the ‘we’re starting a new life together’ theme.
It’s all about something you both love and will like to remember for a long time. Good luck

I can see how this is something you could get hung up on, because there are just so many options! I’ve always love “Matrimony” by Maxwell, but the “maybe you” part is a little… unsure? Much like me about our song lol

He wanted a jagged edge song and I can’t remember the song I originally wanted…in the end, a month before the wedding, we chose My Wife by Raheem devaughn. It was perfect…and it was fun to do a mid-tempo song. No one was bored watching us dance ( you can tell from peoples faces in the video!)

@Miss White Pearl: Good plan!
@Coffee cup: Thanks. Just ask him to waltz, you might be surprised with the response you get.
