Plant Life

“So now let all the light that collects on your plants…keep you warm…make you smile”

- Bright Eyes

Hey hey everybody! *Waves* I’m back with a few more planning goodness as we wait for those glorious photos. Are ya ready?

Today’s topic? MAGIC PLANTS.

Our selection of wedding blooms was always super duper tricky, since we had to find uber specific varieties that doesn’t make allergy-plagued Mr. O sneeze up a storm. The flower gods were kind to the Ostriches as a few of our favorite seasonal flowers passed the test and would fill our gazillion multicolored bottles. But {you know where this is going, right?} I couldn’t stop there. I had my heart set on getting my crazy bridal hands on these magic plants I discovered in my early planning days….wanna see?

See that low {and large} funky lookin’ plant in both of those photos? That fella’s name is Xerographica, and he’s part of this magical plant family, a.k.a Air Plants. See, these air plants are magic because they don’t have to grow in soil AND they only require a weekly soak and moderate light. They’re low maintenance, affordable, totally weird…and had Ostrich Wedding written all over them.

Cue destination wedding conundrum #1,894,338.

While Hawaii boasts tropical blooms a plenty, Air Plants aren’t one of them. GAH.

But {!!!} there IS a crazy amazing online shop, Air Plant Supply Co., that carries and sells and ships these magical air plants to all 50 states. And since they’re magic, they still look spiffy when they tumble out of the shipping box!

So about 3 months before the big day, I ordered a bunch of different types of air plants from the site. Most of them looked just like the online shop photos, though a few were wayyy smaller than I imagined. We gave them a good soak in our sink and - POOF!- they lived happily in our little mason jars.

A month before the wedding, after slimming down the shopping cart and doing some voodoo math, we placed our order and had it shipped to the home of our super fab wedding coordinator, Dianna. And she’s super fab because she took care of our magic plants for 2 weeks before the wedding, even with the zillion other weddings she was planning in between. See?

And, if you’re hooked on air plants as much as yours truly, below are the fellas we ordered for our big day…we bought 34 total. check ’em out!

We had Dianna and her awesome team pepper our cake and reception tables with these crazy plants. They tucked them between our colored glass bottles and alongside the sea corals and urchins. And they looked funky and made these the centerpieces look lush and full. {And yes there will be pictures to share in the near future!}

And while I could go on and on about Air Plant Supply Co., for my Etsy bees out there, you can find some super cute air plants there too. Check out this beauty below. If I saw this a few months ago, I would’ve bought out this gal’s shop!

So there ends the story of the magical Ostrich Wedding plants. We love them and actually plan on keeping our home filled with these guys as a fond reminder of our little beach wedding. :)

Raise your hand if you love air plants, too! And for my other plant loving bees, what kinds are you incorporating into your big day?

I just saw these for the first time on 100 layer cake when they had them as pop up sale last week! I think they are a great alternative to succulents (which seem to be everywhere these days)!

I love these little beauties!! If you are looking for ways to display them, I say a cool wall art display once. I wish I could remember where. Since they don’t need soil you can place them sideways so the pretty part faces the room. Then you wouldn’t have air plant on every surface of your home… not that that’s is a bad thing!

I love these plants - super awesome! When I was thinking of going the succulent route, I had wanted to incorporate these as well. Alas, that didn’t work out, but they still hold a special place in my heart. And they were PERFECT for your lovely Hawaiian wedding!!

Also, I’ve missed you. Just sayin’.

Wow, these are beyond cool! I have never heard of them…I’m obsessed with succulents, but have yet to decide on anything flower related.
