Registry Rumbles

September 2nd, 2011 @ 8:14 am by Mrs. Sunhat

Registering for wedding gifts was not as fun as I thought it would be. Whew! There—I said it out loud. What a relief!

I understand that everyone has their own opinions on the whole registry thing, but in my circle of family and friends, a registry is expected and almost demanded! It isn’t frowned upon and is the norm for an engaged couple in these parts. I have already had numerous requests from people to have the right to an early sneak peek or to have “first dibs” on choosing our gifts!

Mr. Ball Cap and I decided on Bed Bath & Beyond, Macy’s, and MyRegistry.com. MyRegistry.com allows you to add items from any website onto one universal gift registry. It is free to set up, and it also allows you to sync other existing registries you may have out there (from Macy’s, for example) all to one page. This site fit our needs well. As Mr. Ball Cap and I are well into our 30s, we have accumulated quite a bit of household things during our lives. While we do need to replace quite a bit, there are other items that would be more practical for us. We’d love to be able to register at Lowe’s or Menard’s but, sadly, they do not offer registries. By using MyRegistry.com, we can add any item from these stores (or any other online store) to our registry and our guests can go to one site to see it all.
There are other websites out there that claim to offer the same service. We attempted to use Gift Registry 360 by the Knot but had difficulties. We added the button shortcut to our favorites as directed, but each time we tried adding a gift, all we would get was a request to log in to the main site. I finally did a troubleshoot search and discovered other brides were having similar issues and frustrations and recommended MyRegistry.com instead. So far it has worked like a charm.

I do foresee one major downside to using this more modern registry method, and that is it increases the chance of receiving duplicate items. If a guest chooses to purchase our carpet cleaner off of Amazon.com, they have to manually click the box on our MyRegistry page to indicate they purchased the item. If they don’t go back and do this, it will still show up as a needed item. There is no automatic updating like with a Target or Bed Bath & Beyond registry. I understand many of our guests may not like this type of registry, but I think we are providing enough options to appease everyone from aunts to friends.

If I had to go back and relive the registering experience, I would do a few things differently:

1. Just say no! I would have told our Bed Bath & Beyond service rep that we did not want so much hand holding or demonstrations on table linens, cookware, knives, small electronics, etc. We got sucked in early and didn’t know how to get out of it! While some of the info was helpful, it ended up taking the fun out of it and burned us out after two long hours. And the fact that our rep had some serious halitosis going on didn’t help.

2. Do a better job at pre-planning. Mr. Ball Cap and I really should have decided on our bedroom color scheme ahead of time. We weren’t sure if we were sticking with what we had or if we should change it up. We wasted some time on that and wandered aimlessly around the bedding section with no clue what to do. Turns out—we are sticking with what we have! I can finally add sheets to our registry.

3. Register for some things on my own. Mr. Ball Cap has little to no interest in bakeware and miscellaneous kitchen gadgets (pineapple corer!). Instead of dragging him around the store for those kinds of items, I should have gone back on my own. While he isn’t a Debbie Downer, he does have a limited attention span when it comes to these types of things. I, on the other hand, could look around for hours!

We are still fine-tuning the registries now that we have been to both stores and need to add several more items to MyRegistry.com. Do you want to see some of our favorite items so far?!

Miss Sunhat’s picks:

Registry Rumbles : wedding dyer registry Owl owl

Image via Macys.com

I am currently obsessed with owls, and these salt and pepper shakers are adorable!

Registry Rumbles : wedding dyer registry Buffet buffet

Image via Milo

Mr. Ball Cap saw this buffet server in the back corner at Macy’s and knew I’d want it. I am a Crock Pot fanatic, and a buffet server with three pots was something I just had to have! We host Thanksgiving every year, so this will get plenty of use.

Registry Rumbles : wedding dyer registry Lecreus lecreus

Image via Williams-Sonoma

I have always longed to own a piece of Le Creuset cookware. The colors and quality are fantastic. I can imagine making a pot roast or whole chicken in this dutch oven. My mouth is watering thinking about it!

Mr. Ball Cap’s picks:

Registry Rumbles : wedding dyer registry Pizza pizza

Image via Bed Bath & Beyond

Mr. BC’s eye’s lit up when he saw this. We’ve only heard good things about the Presto Pizzazz Pizza Cooker, so we are excited to try it out.

Registry Rumbles : wedding dyer registry Pop pop

Image via Bed Bath & Beyond

This retro air-popcorn machine is super cute. The online reviews are not good, but we’ll give it a shot. Wish we had more room for an old-fashioned popcorn cart!

Registry Rumbles : wedding dyer registry Pepper pepper

Image via Williams-Sonoma

Mr. BC is a jalapeno lover. We attempt to grow them every year using upside down hanging planters. Lately he’s been making his own poppers, so this jalapeno roaster will come in handy. Just core and stuff the peppers, pop them into the roaster, and set it on the grill!

I have no shame in admitting that our favorite items are all kitchen or food related. That’s who we are!!

Although the initial process wasn’t as fun or exciting as I had hoped, I am having a great time reviewing our lists and adding more items online. I’ve promised MOB I won’t stalk our registries once they are completed and the shower invites go out. That will be a tough one!

Did you have any frustrations while you registered? Any other good tips to know?

I have a really old Pizza Pizzazz and I absolutely love it. Not only has it been working for about ten years, but I use it for all kinds of things! I love to toast sandwiches on it, or heat up eggs rolls or other random leftovers from when I go out to eat. You will love it!

I totally understand! We are also into our 30’s and so we have most of what we need. But people really want us to register! I never thought my FI would care so much about things but he really has an opinion about colors etc, and it is soo different from mine that it became frustrating rather easily. Now the debate is whether to get china! I am also a Pampered Chef consultant so we have everything we could possibly need for the kitchen! So, that makes it tough too!

I also love our Pizza Pizzazz! We haven’t started registering yet… we are alittle behind but I’m just not looking forward to it so I keep procrastinating.

I have been using myregistry.com as well and no one is buying off of it. The three people who have forgot to check purchased off of the list…

As much as I love the idea it’s proved to be too complicated for my guests :(

@Kate: Oh NO! That is one of my biggest fears. We really need new bathroom towels and we have them on myregistry. I guess we’ll just see how it goes but I am nervous about our guests using it properly. I’m sure most of them have never heard of it before.

Registring was one of the most annoying days of our lives. We did 2 stores in one day- big mistake. We also throught it would be a good idea to go to the flagship Bed Bath & Beyond in NYC. Talk about overwhelming. I bugged out and finished up online. All our favs. though are def. the kitchen gadetry too. And, I can not wait for my Keurig!!

Menards actually does have a registry! My husband and I registered with them. It’s not anything fancy (no product pictures and you have to go to the store to add things), but it does track what you want and what has been bought for you already (you can view your registry online or at a kiosk in the stores). It’s very bare bones, but it was nice for us since we had just bought a new house and needed lots of tools to work on it.

Check it out here:

I registered all at one physical department store. But still, I haaaated registering. People always look at me like I’m crazy when I say that. But I was so overwhelmed and found it so hard to plan out all of our future needs while surrounded by so many choices.

Just thinking about it makes me anxious all over again! :)

Awesome, awesome picks! I’m totally in love with those salt and pepper shakers. And thanks for your tips! We did our registry totally online. I know people recommend feeling the towels and stroking the sheets and weighing the silverware but… we didn’t. *Shrug* And I pretty much did the registry myself, though Mr. LF did add certain grilling items ;)

I totally feel you on the “limited attention span” issue. I just registered last weekend and while my fiance was good in the bakeware, I completely lost him at the china and crystal. Not a problem though. I have finished up registering for the most part online and will be going back this Sunday with my mom just one last time. I just wanted my fiance to go one time for the experience.

We actually had a really fun time registering together, I figured we would bicker or disagree the whole time, but it ended up being fun. And I love your owl salt and pepper shakers!

The Mr and I have lived together for years so the registry was something I thought would be easy. Boy was I wrong. He started having all this guilt about our families buying us “things” in this terrible economy and was pretty much shut down in Macy’s Home Department. It took his mother and sister to explain to him that people will want to give us something, and me telling him that we only registered for around $700 in gifts for a wedding with 60 guests. Oh and I have the Jalepeno Griller and it is awesome!!!!

Where I’m from registry it’s not really a must. Everyone registers at the same department store (which could be super expensive) cause it’s the only one that offers the service. Even though it’s absolutely normal for guests to ignore the registry and just give you what they want to. The new trend is asking for cash, it’s still a bit frowned upon but it’s a great way out of getting 6 towel sets and 3 dinner services. Of course there’s a risk of people giving you a 20, but having a 250+ guest list we’re hoping to get something out of it.

I am so sorry you did not have a good experience at BBB. It can be overwhelming, but having the right person helping you would have made all the difference. I started on my own but went back a second time to work with an associate. She knew so much and had such great suggestions and ideas. The second time around was SO much mroe fun!
