So…Do You Have Your Dress?

September 2nd, 2011 @ 2:37 pm by Miss Warbler

Wedding dresses. I am nowhere near ready to talk about wedding dresses. I don’t know if I want to have it tailor made or buy it in the store. I don’t know what color I want. I don’t even know if I want to wear a veil! But, as I’m making my way through every other aspect of the planning, it keeps coming up. Yesterday Mr. Warbs and I met with some potential photographers (We LOVED them, but that’s a different post!), and the inevitable question came up: “So…do you have your dress yet?”

This is how I feel whenever people ask me that question:

Our wedding is still months away! No one has their dress this early! Stop pressuring me!

I don’t understand what the big deal is. All right, that was a lie. The dress is important. But in my mind, it’s still too early to be looking for dresses. I know—I’m getting a head start on everything else, so why not the dress?

There are a ton of answers I could give to that question. I haven’t lost enough weight yet. True, I’m aiming to lose at least 30 pounds before the big day. I’m not ready. Seriously, buying a dress makes everything so real! I don’t even know what I want. Hmm, that one actually isn’t true. I know exactly what kind of dress I want, but I’m keeping it a secret from everyone, including you, Mr. Warbler!

I think the biggest reason I don’t want to get my dress yet is I don’t want to ruin it. And I think I might ruin it because I could see myself doing this on a regular basis if I get it too early:

Seriously, how awesome does this look? (Image via TBS.com)

I know myself. If I get my dress too early, I’m going to want to try it on all the time. My reasoning will probably be “see if it still fits right.” I’ll wear it around the house to see how it looks compared to everyday things like my desk or my kitchen counter. I’ll put it on to see how I need to maneuver it to go to the bathroom. I’ll probably even practice eating in it to prevent spilling during the wedding. I’m that neurotic.

So for now I’m going to stick to my guns and stick a pin in dress shopping. I don’t plan on purchasing my dress until maybe December. That may seem a little late, but if I want to prevent months of hanging out on the couch in my full wedding attire, it’s necessary.

Until then, here are a couple of dress styles I was considering.

Is anyone else putting off dress shopping?

Miss Warbler, I don’t want to be a Negative Nelly or anything, but it took five months for my dress to come in after I ordered it. Just don’t wait too long, or you may find you have to pay a “Rush” fee…or that they can’t get it made for you at all.

Ugh, you have captured my sentiments exactly! I feel anxiety over wanting to lose at least 30lbs as well, and then I feel anxiety about putting dress shopping off!

I ordered mine in November 2010, and it finally came the first week of June 2011…almost 8 months. good luck with the search!

I love the second dress. I’m totally feeling you in the ‘wearing it around the house thing’ I did that with my graduation dress I can’t imagine how it’ll be with my wedding dress.

It took almost 5 months for mine to come in so at least give yourself enough time for ordering. Maybe find your dress and find out how long it takes to come in? Then you can decide how late you want to order. They discontinue dresses all the time too so that made me nervous and I didn’t want to risk my dress no longer being available!

I echo the girls above. I already ordered mine (and my wedding is Oct 2012) because I fell in love with one that takes at least 6 mos + an additional 2 mos for special lace detail.

Give yourself enough time! :)

First of all, totally loving the Friends photo. Second of all, I got my dress over a year in advance. I was worried that I too would be trying it on all the time and would accidently ruin it. Wrong. It is so difficult to try on….it has so much material, and the corset is a biatch. Wedding dresses in general seem to take 2 people to get it on you. Which means I have only tried mine on once since I got it. Just something to consider…the hassle might make it easier for you to leave it alone :)

I need to echo the girls above as well. I hope it all works out for you, but it took 6 months for my dress to come, plus you need time for alterations and fittings.

Yep. I’m getting married Jun 2, 2012 and I’m not planning on going dress shopping until December. I also hate when people ask me if I have mine yet!

I completely put dress buying out of my mind at first. I was too busy with all the other details to worry about a dress! I had everything else planned/booked within two months after getting engaged..yes every. thing. Except the dress. After some soul searching on why I was avoiding what is supposed to one of the biggest concerns of the newly engaged lady, I realized my reason for the avoidance tactics: fear!
I had been searching the internet for dress concepts and each dress is (usually) modeled on a perfect size nothing girl and I was seriously fuh-reaking out that I would not look remotely non-whale like in any dress. So to solve this dilemma, I scheduled an dress appt and took only my most bestest friend with me. After a minor panic attack in the dressing room, I emerged in the first dress. Although the look wasn’t for me…I didn’t look half bad…pretty good in fact. I tried on a few more to get the kinks out of the system, scheduled my “official” dress try on session for the next month. The “official” session was attended by all important female friends/family and yielded dress try on success!!! I LOVE my dress …and me in it!!!! I can’t believe I put it off, so yes I understand your delay (whew, my fingers are sore from typing……)

I started looking for my dress in June of last year. I didn’t find “the” dress until September. I ordered my dress in September for a May wedding. It came in January. The store kept it and the alterations place picked it up from the store. I then kept it at the alterations place until about a week before the wedding.

So, there was no way I would be hanging out in it. Also, the corset and fabric is just soo much that you literally cannot just try it on by yourself. I hope you know of a place that can work with your timeline! I just found many stores not willing to work with deadlines that close!

Is there a way you can just leave it at the store?

I was never really excited about wedding dress shopping, and then I ended up finding the one I fell in love with on a random “let’s see what this whole wedding dress experience is about” trip by myself.

Then I got really excited about having a wedding dress… which I probably try on about once a month when I have a quiet moment to myself at home. My wedding is still over a year away.

Totally worth maneuvering the gigantor garment bag from the spare room closet to the bedroom, avoiding the cats (fur! claws! eek!), and locking the door to prevent any accidental fiance viewing just to be able to relive that “wow, this dress is amazing” feeling all over again. And, you know, check that it fits.

Agreed - give yourself some time! Looking now can’t hurt… and you might find THE ONE and then that’s one last thing to check off your list. I know it seems like a huge commitment, but you don’t want to be all stressed out wondering if it’ll come in time, get altered in time, etc.!

I totally understand! I am making my sweet mother keep my dress so I won’t be tempted to live in it!
I do recommend at least trying some on. I was so surprised at the style I ended up with. It was completely different from what I started looking at. And it took me almost 6 months of trying diffferent dresses on to pick my dress!
And if you find your dress early you can always hold off on buying it. You might get a great deal that way!

I put off dress shopping for awhile too because I wanted to lose weight and was sure I would look awful in everything. I was engaged for 8 months before I even started looking!! But I knew the pressure was on because it was 9 months before the wedding at that point and I knew I needed to get myself in gear. I had only lost 15 of the 35 I wanted to lose but I felt OK enough to look. Funny thing is, I looked wonderful in most of the dresses I tried on. I think everyone looks good in a wedding dress, really! :) And I just found one on Saturday, woohoo. So it’s true, if you are getting married next April I would start looking now, you don’t have to buy but just look you may be surprised :)

I bought my dress 15 months before my wedding haha… but its been almost 5 months and it’s still not in yet. Then add the time to alter it and well, I wouldn’t wait TOO long for your dress! I didn’t plan on buying mine till the late fall because I wanted to loose weight first, but I decided to just look and oh boy did I feel wonderful in every single wedding dress. Give them a try, you would be surprised… I’ve never felt so great in my life!
