Studying the Itch

September 2nd, 2011 @ 4:41 pm by Mrs. Funnel Cake

At the height of my mad hunt for a jacket, I made the daily rounds to bestbridalprices.com and noticed they were selling the matching bolero to my dress. AHHH. [Insert hyperventilating.] I panicked. They were selling off Sabelle boleros. This could only mean one thing—my dress is being discontinued soon!

Now was my chance to buy the jacket made for my dress and rest assured that the color and cut would match perfectly! …buuuut I wasn’t sure this was what I wanted anymore. I decided to consult my collection of Sabelle photos and survey how the bolero looked on real brides.

The bolero looks crisp and fresh on the Maggie Sottero model, but on real brides I thought that it looked more limp and lackluster. The underarm shots? Not a fan. I wasn’t so impressed with the reality. While I knew it would match my dress perfectly, I also thought maybe the high collar would look terribly out-of-date in a few years.

After consulting with SIL Funnel Cake, she confirmed that the high collar was a bit weird and I officially gave up the idea of getting the matching Sabelle bolero. I felt slightly relieved that I made that choice, but I still needed to figure out where to get a jacket from!

To further study my dress (because I was truly obsessed) I looked at girls who wore the straps offered by Maggie Sottero:

The straps were cute on some, but generally I didn’t like what they did to the strapless dress. If I really wanted sleeves or straps I would have bought a dress that had them.

So what did the Sabelle brides do for custom jackets? Well, I studied that as well…

I commended these brides for truly making their Sabelle their own by customising their jacket, but none of their choices were quite right for me. (I also just noticed three of those four women are all wearing crowns… should I take a hint??)

I admit bees, I was so obsessed I even went out in Zürich and bought a jacket one weekend.

Please excuse the crappy photo booth pictures and my zombie morning face.

I wasn’t the biggest fan of the sleeve hem and I actually like the jacket better rolled up to my elbows. But overall, I wasn’t 100% sure this was the jacket I wanted. It was a purchase out of desperation and it didn’t quell my crazy hunt to find the perfect jacket AT ALL. I will still bring it along and see if I love or hate it with my dress (or if it even matches) but I still needed to find a jacket to satisfy my inner bride. Now I’m shaping up to be a two-jacket bride!

Did you buy any accessories that you knew you probably wouldn’t wear on the wedding day?

oooh!! So pretty. I would get the matching bolero. :) It is meant for the dress. And perfect for October. I really do like the jacket you purchased too…but is it special enough for that dress?

oops–I didn’t read that you had counted out the matching jacket. sorry. The dress is regal (one reason why so many of the girls are wearing tiaras) but you can let the dress be the statement and go simpler with the accessories. Follow your instincts! return policies vary…but you might want to get a couple of jackets to try on with the dress. Good luck–you are going to look beautiful in that awesome dress!!!

OK, Funnel Cake, we need to start a support group for crazy insane brides who cannot make up their freakin’ minds! This post is my line of reasoning to a tee! I have gone back and forth on adding straps, getting a bolero, a jacket, a sweater, debating sleeve length, style, and color. I seriously spent hours the other day researching lace boleros only. I finally got Mr. P to take over my craziness, and thank God he did! In five minutes, he picked out the perfect bolero and ordered it for me. Sometimes you just have to make a decision or go crazy!

I agree that the Sotero bolero will look dated some day soon. But I’m thinking maybe the one you picked up is TOO casual for the fancy-ness of your dress. It is far from a casual dress.
If you stuck with that one, maybe you could add lace around the cuff or some kind of applique. Would probably still be cheaper than getting a new bolero.

I love that the bolero matches the dress and I think it looks better than the other options thus far. I would purchase the bolero and get it the neckline altered. Best of luck!

I can’t believe how many pics you have been able to find of real brides wearing your gown! I have only found one wearing mine and she only got married a few months ago and I found her on the bee boards! I pray you find the perfect jacket - and find it soon so you are at peace!
