About Mrs. Skunk

All the Venues That Weren’t

September 4th, 2011 @ 12:30 pm by Mrs. Skunk

As soon as we were engaged, I was determined to find a venue. We had settled on a late October wedding, and here we were in the middle of February. I needed to get a move on. My thinking was that we for sure wanted to be married outside, with a great view, and preferably in northwest Georgia or the Chattanooga area where we met and got engaged.

So while the boys were out climbing one day, one of my soon-to-be bridesmaids (heretofore known as BM C. Bear) went out a-looking. I had heard about one particular venue called Grandview.

It’s a cute little mansion at the top of Lookout Mountain. What really sold me on it was this picture.

Oh my goodness gracious, that beautiful view of the Chattanooga Valley! I swooned. Unfortunately, in person I wasn’t getting the good vibes I’d felt when looking online, so we decided to keep looking. We checked out the Fairyland Club, which was way too formal for our tastes, and while they also had a beautiful view, the only outside area was right next to the tennis courts and didn’t offer the view I was hoping for.

I had one last idea up my sleeve. A state park. Yes, it would involve a ton of DIY, but I can be crafty, right? So BM C. Bear and I headed to Cloudland Canyon State Park.

I’ll be honest, I had been here once or twice as a kid, but the only reason I had thought to look at it as a potential venue was because I had come across these amazing photos. Holy bajeezus and shut the front door. Yes, please. Where do I sign? Unfortunately, when we actually went there were already a ton of weddings scheduled around the time that we were hoping to secure a venue. And while the canyon is gorgeous, I had been counting on a venue where the ceremony and reception were in the same spot; here, guests would have to drive from the ceremony site to the reception hall (which was kinda just stuck back in the woods and afforded no view whatsoever).

So by the end of the day, we had visited about five venues in person, and countless more online where when we called to inquire the people were rude or didn’t have availability this year. Needless to say, I was bummed and needed a glass of bourbon to figure out my next step. My biggest advice to venue-hunting brides—visit the venues in person! The in-person view can be so much different from the pictures you see online. I spent the day feeling like Goldilocks: one was too fancy, while another was too plain; some had availability, and most didn’t. Nothing seemed to be “just right.”

Was anyone else surprised by this? What was your experience? What’s your drink of choice to keep your wedding wheels on track?

It was one of the worst experiences of my wedding planning! I hated trying to find a place too. Nothing was what we were looking for, and we wanted an outdoors wedding as well, but my family kept saying you never know, it could rain! So we had to find somewhere that had the flexibility of something inside and outside!
We found a beautiful property, ten acres on a private lake, and had an old church building on site. We fell in love! I paid the deposit and secured everything, and the day before my wedding - the venue fell through. The guy who owned it was extremely unprofessional. It was so depressing, and I didn’t love my wedding because of it.

I’m so glad I read your post. I’m almost paying the deposit on a place I saw online, but fiancé told me we should go visit the sites in person. Our problem is I have some details in mind we can’t go without, it has to be Dec 7tth (non flexible date) and it has to be outside. Wish me luck.. :S

@miss-spunkin: What a nightmare! In the end though, you get to marry the person you love and with all the yucky planning days, that’s what I try to keep in focus.
@Coffee cup: For sure! Professional photos can be super misleading. Especially when they edit out minor details like dumpsters and power lines!

I looked at a few places online first. Took the fiance to one. He decided we were having the wedding there and didn’t want to look at the other options.

Totally feeling you whit you ‘in the end though, you get to marry the person you love’ so thumbs up for keeping your focus in the goal, but we’re girls so it’s more than understandable (encouraged by some) to look for perfection that day.. Best of luck

Being from such a small area, I had been to most of the venues we considered before, but I agree that there is something about seeing the venue in person and imagining it where you will have your wedding.

I fell in love with one place, price was great, we could bring in our own caterer but had to buy liqour from them….not a problem until they said that included soda @ $5 a pitcher!!!! That totally broke our budget, we’d pay more in drinks than on the place. So we continued looking, having only 50 guests ade it that much harder since most all inclusive want at least 75 guests!! But I found a place that was exactly what we wanted and they worked with us to do only 50 guests as long as we did it on a Sunday!! We were truly blessed to have it work out. Hope you get the same luck we did =)

A nice glass of wine… that keeps me going. I have had such an UGH time. I’ve looked up probably 30 places, we have seen 3 and I know the one we want… but my parents aren’t thrilled with it. They didn’t like the place we like… *sigh* I just want to book it and have a wedding date finally.

I agree that Grandview isn’t as spectacular in person as it is online. :/ I hope you find something that is perfect for you!

Hello! I am from Chattanooga as well and have visited most of those sites you have talked about. Have you tried Laurelwood or Tennessee River Place? Are you getting married this October or 2012?

I’m so glad to have read this right now as we are in our venue search and are really trying to make a decision by this weekend in order to secure our date. It is definitely tough as there are two places we love but both have some big negatives and don’t seem perfect. I know we will find the right place though!
