Dancing with My Father

September 5th, 2011 @ 12:00 pm by Mrs. Sunhat

The father/daughter dance is something I’m really looking forward to. My father is an amazing man and has always been there for his daughters. He is the smartest, hardest-working man I know, and I am so honored to have him walk me down the aisle on my wedding day.

When “Butterfly Kisses” came out all those years ago, I thought for sure it was what Dad and I would be dancing to.

While this is still a lovely song, I don’t feel it is the right one anymore.

I wanted my dad to have the final word on the matter, so I sent him an email asking him to think about some choices and included links to a few of my favorites. I even gave him the option of telling me his choice or keeping it to himself until the big day.

Some of my faves:

“Somewhere Over the Rainbow” by Israel “IZ” Kamakawiwo’ole:

“My Little Girl” by Tim McGraw:

This song has always stuck with me since the first listen. Even at 32, I still feel like my dad’s little girl!

And the song I secretly hope Dad chooses, “Walk With You” by Edwin McCain:

I can’t make it 30 seconds into this song without losing it. I love everything about it.

My parents adore Mr. Ball Cap, and he and my dad have become quite close. I know my dad thinks of him as the son he never had. My only worry is that by choosing this song, I’m guaranteed to be a blubbery mess the entire time! It will be so worth it.

Are you having a father/daughter dance? If so, did you choose the song or let Dad decide?

When I was selecting the father/daughter dance, I was at a loss as well. I had so many songs that I liked, but when it came down to choosing it, I stuck with the memories that my dad and I have. I grew up listening to Van Morrison, so I knew that was going to be the artist we danced to. After I narrowed the song down to “Have I told you lately…?”, it made me cry every time I listend to it. But, on the wedding day, we both were filled with so much happiness, there wasn’t a tear. He was happy, I was happy, and it was more of a new beginning than saying good-bye :)

I know that it is crazy but the only song I can ever think of dancing with to my father to is the only one we ever danced to and I remember only doing it a few times…but after so many years I am having problems convincing him to get on the dance floor but I think once the song starts playing he will be more into it…It is Simon and Garfunkle’s “Scarbourough Faire” ! I can’t wait to dance with him again!!!!

I let my dad decide 100%. I didn’t give him any options because I didn’t want to limit him or seem like I was pressuring him into a song. He finally decided yesterday and I’m so excited to dance with him!

Check out “You’re My Hero” by Teresa James- an absolutely beautiful song. We danced to that. It is less common, but the words are amazing. I gave my Dad a list of about 5 songs and let him choose. He loved this one, and I was hoping he would choose it

i’m dancing to “Cinderella” by Steven Curtis Chapman, sort of like “butterfly kisses”. It brought me to tears the first time I heard it. I can’t wait!

Mr. Kettle is definitely setting up unrealistic expectations for his friends for how a son-in-law/father-in-law relationship will likely go. They get along so well. Doesn’t it make that moment with your dad even more special for the day of because you know he’s really very happy with your choices leading up to it?
