In Which We Search for Musicians

September 6th, 2011 @ 5:08 pm by Miss Warbler

In my last post, I expressed my dream of having a friend officiate my wedding and “Everlong” (acoustic, of course) being played as I walk down the aisle. Well, the officiant is taken care of (woot!). Now we move on to the music!

First of all, Mr. Warbs and I are only having live musicians for the ceremony and cocktail hour. That’s right. No band or DJ for our reception—we’re going the DIY route.

Here are a few reasons we’re not having a DJ. Cost. Some of the quotes we got from local DJs were ridiculous. A lot of them started at a grand. As in a grand for the bare minimum. And if you’ve ever been to a party with a DJ, the majority of them use iTunes or even their iPod. I figured why should we pay somebody a thousand-plus dollars to do something we could do ourselves?

But we want live music for the ceremony. At first I wanted to have a string quartet. Classical, romantic, and visually awesome. But cost-wise it didn’t make sense for our budget.

Instead we opted to have a solo musician. It made sense cost-wise, and it would serve our small wedding. There were a few sounds we knew we didn’t like. Violin was nice, but not as nice when accompanied by another instrument like a guitar. We also knew we didn’t want a harp.

In the end we decided to go with the guitar. Most of the ooey-gooey songs I love are acoustic covers: “Everlong,” “Heartbeats” by Jose Gonzalez, and “Thirteen” by Elliot Smith. So far I’ve found a few solo guitarists who seem to be reasonably priced. And, more importantly, have good samples of their music.

So to recap, for the ceremony and cocktail hour we’ll have live acoustic-guitar playing. During the reception, we’ll have our own handcrafted playlist to rock our guests’ faces off. The playlist is currently under construction but shows promise for an awesome time! iTunes reception, here we come!

Are you going the iTunes route?

We’re using a DJ that was reasonably priced for the ceremony and reception. Dream would be a string quartet, but the cost is too much. The solo instrument is a great idea that I never really considered.

I’m in DJ hell right now, so the ipod reception is sounding better every minute :) You guys will be rockin’ and savin’ money at the same time!

We went with the DIY DJ route as well! Like you, we didn’t want to spend copious amounts of money for something we could do ourselves. Thankfully Mr. P’s old roommate is a playlist and mixing master, so they’re putting together the most awesome dance list ever!

Something I’d recommend, if you’re not already doing this - get a friend to man the iPod during the reception. At my friend’s wedding this summer, guests kept coming up and changing the song on the iPod midway through another song. It was like, if they didn’t happen to like the song that was playing, they just went up and changed it. It was so disruptive and not conducive to dancing at all. If you have someone who is officially “in charge” of the iPod stuff during the reception, it might help avoid that.

After some serious searching, we finally found a reasonably priced DJ. I could not get over how expensive DJs are, though! I’ve had friends have good results with using iPods, though I do recommend having someone in charge of it for the reception!

We are doing the ipod thing for the ceremony. I am a little nervous about it since it is a lot of start and stopping. I am definitely going to have to put someone in charge of it!

Choosing music is a huge decision. I love the idea of acoustic guitar. I went to a wedding that used that for their ceremony and it was just perfect. It really fit them as a couple and added that extra something to the wedding a different instrument or type of music wouldn’t have done.
