Mrs. Parasol, San Ramon, California Age and Occupation: 25, Non-profit writer, editor, and blogger Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Law school student Engagement Date: December 19th, 2010 Wedding Date: September 2011 Venue: Bent Creek Winery (Livermore, California); Reception: Family Residence (San Ramon, California) About Me: I am a California girl at heart. I love the outdoors, sunny days at the beach, and hiking in the woods and mountains. I also love good books and am fresh from completing my Master's degree in English and Comparative Literature in New York City. Living in NYC was an amazing experience, and while I'm glad to be back on the West Coast, I'm also thankful that my two years back East gave me an opportunity to explore new places, make new friends, and indulge my passion for Broadway shows. Oh, and I received a pretty awesome proposal from Mr. Parasol in Central Park. Above all else, Mr. Parasol is my biggest cheerleader and my best friend. But even though I'm thrilled to be marrying him, I wasn't always totally on board with this whole wedding thing and at first, I wanted to run off and elope. I've finally been convinced to throw the wedding I never thought I wanted, and so now I'm busy planning an intimate September wedding filled with DIY details. Along the way, I'm slowly learning to appreciate, perhaps even love the wedding planning process.
About Mrs. Parasol

When it comes to wedding favors, I was surprisingly (and thankfully) very decisive: we would be providing an edible favor or nothing at all. I can’t tell you how many bottles of bubbles and little boxes I’ve collected at weddings over the years, and they all end up forgotten at the bottom of some drawer. Edible favors, on the other hand, always get put to very good and tasty use.

Mr. Parasol and I bounced around a few different ideas and ultimately decided on providing homemade granola for our guests. We both absolutely love granola, it’s easy to make, and it’s a relatively affordable favor option. And when Cousin Parasol E, who is just about the best 17-year-old cook in the history of the world, said she makes a mean granola, I was totally sold. So one weekend, I went up to Cousin E’s for a sleepover, and between lots of gossip and bad TV, we whipped out more than enough granola for our 90 wedding guests.

Our first stop was WinCo, the most amazing and affordable store ever. I still can’t believe I’d never heard of it before. We quickly stocked up on all the granola supplies we could ever need.

And I’m serious. Our math skills were totally wonky, and we had the hardest time converting cups into pounds and ounces. We ended up buying way more supplies than we needed (probably twice as much!). But whatever. All told, everything cost about $63, which is an amazing deal for wedding favors if you ask me.

Once we got back to Cousin E’s, we set to work!

We made batches and batches of granola, and it took most of the afternoon to crank everything out. But like I said, we didn’t mind because we were busy gossiping and watching bad TV while waiting for the granola to cook. And the end results were so delicious!

I left with two large paper bags filled to the gills with granola; more than enough to provide each of our guests with a tasty breakfast the day after our wedding. I hope they enjoy it as much as I do!

And of course, a big thanks to Cousin E for being the best granola-making buddy a bride could ever ask for!

I totally agree with you, an edible favor or nothing at all. While I would have loved to make something we chose to give out Lokum a Turkish candy to represent my side of the family. I have to say I ate a lot of it while bagging it up though…yummy!

Since we live on the Central Coast of California, we’re going to give Santa Maria Style seasoning for our favors. It’s perfect.

What a great idea! I personally LOVE edible favors, when I go to a wedding- they almost never make it home! =o)

I love edible favors, and I’m totally with you. I usually leave my non-edible favor on the table at the end of the night, because seriously, what the hell do I want with a 1×3 frame that doesn’t match anything in my house?
My only concern with edible, homemade favors is freshness. I’d want to do the favors as close to the day as possible, but I also don’t need to add all that stress on myself. How long does granola keep? How far in advance did you make it?

I’m a big fan of edible favors so great choice! And now I’m trying to remember if I have some granola left at home because I have a sudden craving!

I agree with the fact that I knew from day one if I did a favor at all it would be something edible. I have been to too many weddings where I have gotten junk I didn’t personally care about… we are doing chocolate covered pretzels in cute little boxes! they will be dipped in chocolate and drizzled with pink chocolate… to match the wedding colors.

Thanks for all the awesome responses on my super easy-to-make and super yummy wedding favors! Now I just have to make sure I don’t eat all the granola before the wedding…
@xtatic1: Wow, that candy sounds awesome! Can you send me some? :)
@honeymead: What a great idea! I feel like it symbolizes how flavorful your new lives will be together (or something super corny like that).
@Kell-belle: I’ll have to dig it up! It’s actually Cousin E’s recipe, and it’s so good!
@MissIcecream: Great question! I made the granola about a month before the wedding, and it keeps really well so long as it’s in an air-tight bag. So I haven’t assembled the favors yet; I’ll have to do that at the last minute, but for now, the majority of the work is done!
@hisbahamamama: Oh, I am ALWAYS craving granola. :)
@AshleyB: Oh my gosh, that sounds so yummy and pretty! Now I want some!

This sounds so yummy. Too bad you can’t use your extra granola as an eco-friendly confetti of sorts for a send off. Crazy idea, I know. I apologize.

mmmm that granola looks delicious. I am so behind the times but granola on the tart frozen yogurt is one of my favorite things!
