Mr. S and I are back from our delayed Alaska honeymoon, and I’m jet-lagged as hell. I should be in bed but my internal clock is all screwed up, so why not share our trip with you?
These honeymoon posts are going to be very pic heavy, because everything that we saw is so incredibly beautiful. And we saw tons of animals, so there is plenty of cuteness as well. I took almost 3,000 photos, so narrowing it down to just a few dozen was really hard. Really hard. Also, these posts are going to be loooooooong. We did a whole lot of stuff in these ten days!
First of all, I need to thank the wonderful Mrs. Octopus, who, although she didn’t know it, basically planned our trip for us! She told me about a trip that she and her Mister had taken a few years back, and I basically copied her itinerary. And it was AWESOME. So thanks for being a savior to a lazy travel planner, Octo dear!
Anyway, I’m not going to really recap day one of our trip for you, because it basically involved an airline computer error that resulted in us not being allowed to get on our first flight. And that resulted in me throwing a hissy fit at the airport and us having to take three planes instead of two to get to Anchorage from Philly. We were supposed to arrive in Anchorage at noon their time, but we ended up getting there at around 8PM Alaska time, which was about midnight in our Eastern Standard Time brains. We checked into our hotel, showered, grabbed a quick dinner at Orso, and then went straight to sleep for a long, long time.
The next morning, we drove south for about two and a half hours to Seward, a little town on the Kenai Peninsula. It was a beautiful, scenic drive full of mountains and water, but there’s plenty of that coming up so I’ll spare you for now. We couldn’t check into our cabin until about 3PM, so we had a quick bite and then wandered around the town in the drizzle.
After lunch, we went to the Alaska Sealife Center, Alaska’s only public aquarium and ocean wildlife rescue center.
We paid extra to do their Marine Mammal Encounter, where you get to go behind the scenes and get up really close to some wildlife. Unfortunately, I wasn’t allowed to photograph a lot of the facility or the steller sea lions because of some reason I don’t really understand involving research (bummer) but we did get to get very close to some adorable harbor seals.
That face. Snapper is mostly blind with cataracts, and he’s 27 years old, which is super old for his species. He’s only alive because he’s in captivity—he’d never survive in the wild for that long.
Yes, that seal is painting a picture. Could you die?
After hanging out with the cuties at the Sealife Center, we checked into our cabin, which was so adorable, and in the middle of nowhere.
They’d left us a note to be careful because some black bears were wandering around, but we didn’t see them, as much as we were dying to.
After dinner, we settled in for our next few days of adventures.
Have you ever been to Alaska? What is your favorite memory?
