Dressin’ My Maids

September 7th, 2011 @ 3:23 pm by Mrs. Sunhat

When it was time to look at bridesmaids’ dresses, my MOH, Bridesmaid S, and Bridesmaid K joined me and MOB at a shop near my house. We had an appointment, but when we walked in the door, there was no one around! We waited a few minutes and hollered out a hello or two, but still no one. We finally had to walk to the back of the store to find the associate. This rough start made me a little nervous, but I was determined to have a good experience and have fun!

I told the associate we were looking for floor-length dresses for a winter wedding and were looking for options in silver, pewter, or charcoal colors. She directed us to the right area of the shop and let us look at our leisure.

The girls knew I really liked dresses that had a brooch or beading embellishment—something to make them stand out and have a wintery feel. Other than that, I was pretty open to styles and suggestions.

We liked elements of each of these dresses and could easily add a brooch to the first or third. The second dress was nice, but the material was just way too shiny.

This dress looked too matronly for our tastes.

We decided we like the first and third dresses the best. They had optional straps, which are definitely needed as some of my ladies are quite chesty! There was one major problem—the colors available for these dresses just weren’t doing it for me. I had originally decided to go with silver gowns for the girls rather than navy. Poor decision on my part! The silvers were really pale, and I was worried they would look washed out next to my ivory gown. I was hoping for a richer, deeper silver/gray, and that just wasn’t available in these styles.

Although we didn’t find a winner on the first outing, we did have a great time!

Did your dress colors change once you started shopping and saw what was available in bridal land?

My BM dress color definitely changed! Thought I was going to do green or even a really dark purple but actually ended up loving a graphite dress! Here is a pic of the one I’m going with-BM’s will be in the knee-length version but MOH will be in full-length version. Thought you might be interested to see the full-length graphite with embellishment dress! Hope it’s ok to put the link in:

Ok, so I have to ask… was this at Park Avenue Brides (sorry the background just looks familiar!)? I am formerly a NWI girl, and purchased a dress there this year…with disastrous results! I hope they were nice to you!

I love the pink dress and the way the light catches the colour of it. It can be a great idea to pick out the colour of your bridesmaid dresses in other wedding features like taffeta or organza sashes and table decorations to keep your wedding theme going throughout all the aspects of your wedding.

I can’t make up my mind. I gave my maids a color and am letting them pick a dress (very different body types). Now, I’m thinking we need a standard color and designer. Gave up trying to find colors online and ordered swatches from several designers. Hopefully, this will ease the decision making.

The first one looks gorgeous on your bridesmaid! Love it! Sorry I misread it as “dressilyme” lol~~ If you really like the color you thought firstly, I suggest you could try some on-line dress store, they are pretty cheap and all the colors are available usually~~

I wanted a nice rich fall color but didnt want it to “fight” with the colors of my beautiful fall flowers, not an easy task. So once I decided to get a gown ivory/gold…FI DECIDED girls would do the gold/ivory combo. It works out nicely since my girls vary from very pale white to a very dark/olive complexion.

I also went the route of same color/fabric and they could choose their own style from same designer as long as they flowed nicely. Ended up with 3 stykes for 4 girls, all chiffon with touch of satin. Everyone is thrilled with their dress and can def use it again.

Yes!! I loved the dessy colors but couldnt justify making my girls pay $270 for a dress (I love being canadian but why bridesmaids dresses are sooo much more here than in the US I will never know grr) so I ended up going with venus which was the lowest long chiffon dress I could find and it was only $175 which is cheap here , the only issue was that the colors were much darker than I originally wanted and there were not as many color options but I just sucked it up to save my girls money

That one dress really was very shiny! I love it when dress shopping with the ladies really turns out nicely. Hope the next trip was just as fun!
