Choosing Sides

September 8th, 2011 @ 2:44 pm by Mrs. Skunk

Picking out our wedding party has been, for me, the hardest part of wedding planning. We have been blessed with an AMAZING group of friends.

When you have climbing friends, you gain folks you can trust with your life. We’re constantly encouraging and supporting each other in climbing pursuits, but it also bleeds over into everyday life, and I love them for that. But from what you can see in the pictures, it’s a large, varied group, and choosing a few couldn’t have been a harder task. If I chose every one of my favorite people, we wouldn’t have anyone sitting down!

So we went back and forth over lots of different options. We decided to pick folks and sit on our decision for a couple weeks to make sure it stuck. I opted for my best friend of 23 years (yep, our whole lives) to be my maid of honor: “MOH L. Bug” from here on out. There was never any question in my mind on this one. Then I chose my college best friend, because despite a long-distance relationship for over six years, I can always rely on her to answer the phone and just be there. Now she will be known as “BM J. Snake.” My last two girls are climber girls. As I said before, narrowing this down was so hard, but in the end I decided on “BM C. Bear” and “BM C. Koala.” As a couple we tend to spend a lot of our time with these girls and their hubbies, and they are just good people.

Without further ado, my ladies.

How many people did you choose for your wedding party? Did you have a difficult time?

That’s a nice group. My wedding party has been set for years now. I have a group of 5 close friends who’ve been planning my wedding (and bachelorette party of course) for years now (way too many years). FI was the same, there was never a doubt his 5 best friends will be standing beside him in our wedding day.

Loved your post! And I can relate for sure. It was really hard for me, because I have 3 FSIL. Yep, 3. And I never envisioned a large wedding party. Always just wanted my people there. The friends that I have shared so many experiences with. So right away I chose 3 girls. MOH is my sister. BM 1 and BM 2 are friends of mine since high school, my best friends. BM 3 is a close friend of mine - she and I have become good friends since moving to a new town. I kept going back and forth,should I ask his sisters,should I not - it was hard!! I will definitely find other ways to honor them.

@loveknows: That one was a hard choice for me too. I will be gaining a SIL and REALLY wanted her to be involved. She’s pretty shy though, so her and I are hanging out on our own time doing wedding things.
@Miss White Pearl: I know right?! ;)

You have such fun friends! I chose my sister, an old friend, two new(er) friends, and my fiance’s cousin. But my fiance has more groomsman than I have bridesmaids so I contemplated choosing others, but ultimately just left it with those whom I am closest too!

Being an encore bride I wanted small, but picking our bridal party made that hard!!!!! I’m very close to my family and we both have kids, so our party ended being 4 & 4…our 2 sons, his BF and my brother, my sis sis-in-law, his daughter and my BF from highschool. We chose people who will be in this with us for the long haul…wether they like it or not…lol. Great pics

I was not sure either. I didn’t want to have more than three bridesmaids. Both my sisters (of course they will be ‘maids) had large wedding parties. I prefer smaller groups. So I have my two sisters and my closest friend growing up (besides my twin sis). My good friends I gained in college and through work I have asked to participate in various activities to be included in my wedding…speeches, etc.

We basically just chose all the people we currently love and hang out with who we know we’ll be friends with for years to come and who we’ve been friends with for at least 10 years. The one exception is my best man who I’ve known for only 8 years. But that’s how we ended up with 10 each, our parameters were soooo broad!
