Smackerels of Sweets

September 8th, 2011 @ 8:17 am by Mrs. Honey

Mmm sweets. I’ve got a big sweet tooth so it’s no surprise that I’ve put just quite a bit of thought into what kind of sweetness we will have at our wedding. I love that we aren’t pinned into the cake corner anymore and that nowadays we have many more options as to what smackerels to serve our guests to appease their own sweet tooths. Cakes are the standard, but beautiful choice…I’m drawn to ruffly and ombre colored cakes that double as works of art:

Knowing that the artsy detailed cake would not fit into our budget, I did what I do best: turned to Google for other options. And oh, the options. I was dead set on the cupcake tower last fall. I love the over-the-top look of the display and the ability to provide multiple flavors:

Somewhere along the way, though, I lost the love for the full on cupcake tower and was convinced ew needed a candy buffet, and this inspiration image keeps slipping into my dreams:

Our colors, however, do not scream sugary candy-coated goodness. Quick, think of a pretty navy colored candy. No? How about gray? Aside from jelly beans, I was having a hard time coming up with the perfect candy for our palette. Then somehow the wedding Gods, as if really feeling my need for the perfect dessert, provided me with this image—the holy grail of wedding desserts:

I was immediately smitten; the variety, the sweetness, the display. This picture has since replaced all previous dessert crushes. And, with this image in mind I started off the garage sale season with the hopes of finding an eclectic mix of cake/dessert plates.

Specifically, I don’t have the details of what desserts will be displayed. I do know there will be little amounts of quite a few varieties. I’m seeing pies, dipped strawberries, and cookies. And, caramel apples—I really want caramel apples. Oh, yes…and cupcakes and candy. It’s like the best of all dessert worlds!

Even though we aren’t going the traditional wedding cake route, we will still need some sort of purty cake for us to cut-n-smash, right? Thanks to this post from Mrs. Socks, we will be creating this kind of cake:

I’m going to have to agree with Mrs. Socks when she says, “Ohmygodrockcandycake!” This satisfies my desire for an artsy cake, but because Mama Honey says she will make it and I can stick the candy on, it will be much more affordable. Can I get a woop woop?! I’m so excited to share my cake plates with you…up next.

Tell me about your sweet treats, hive! Cupcakes, candy, cake? All of the above?

I’m set on cupcakes… and I plan to make the little toppers myself! However the wedding is 10 months away and I could always change my mind… Mrs. Socks rock candy cake is amazing…

If you have trouble finding cake displays, they’re super easy to make yourself! A candle stick holder and a fancy plate with some epoxy and… tada!

I love the look of the desert station! I can’t wait to see the stands you get! And hey - if you ever want to get rid of them after the wedding - I know a place they could go, lol… just sayin :)

I love that candy rock cake - can’t wait to see yours! I had to giggle at your navy candy comment. I was so determined to have a candy buffet but all the blue candy is bright blue and there isn’t much silver candy unless you count the wrappers. I’ve kind of put that on the back burner for now unless I get an extra kick in the pants towards the end. I really want a caramel apple now.

There’s a lot more than you think!

Another option that we did for ours was make our own wrappers for Hershey bars that we bought. Now, I did have to wrap each bar in foil as the bulk packs don’t have the foil wrapping anymore, but you can find a free template online and they fit perfectly two to a page :)

@KatieJean: I love little cupcake toppers, so adorable!
@jessica.dirr: Sweet, I don’t have plans for them after the wedding, so we can chat after January!
@Miss Sunhat: Oh I will live vicariously through you if you do the candy buffet!! Me, too, caramel apple please!
@kcroxyoursox: Thanks for sharing that link!! There are some more blue options that I hadn’t come across…they may just make it into the dessert buffet afterall :)

I love that rock candy cake. If you can’t find the correct color of rock candy, you can make it. It is really easy to make, and you can control the flavor and color. It’s one of those project that requires some time at the start and then just a little daily work (5 minutes) while you sit back and watch the ‘rocks’ grow.

I had a bride show me a photo of a cake almost exactly like the purple cake in the first photo. She loved it but she does not like fondant (the ribbon looking stuff). After a couple of months of sketches and feedback we came up with something that the couple would like. The biggest thing they wanted was yellow, lots of it. I can tell you that since it was a rough butter cream finish, there cost was very reasonable.
