Miss Kettle's Picture
Miss Kettle, Chicago, IL Age and Occupation: 26, Non-Profit Donor Resource Coordinator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, Musician & Teacher Engagement Date: May 29, 2011 Wedding Date: February 2012 Venue: Patrick C. Haley Mansion, Joliet, IL About Me: I'm a city girl who loves a good escape, so I'm planning a Chicago wedding outside of the city. I've been described as a quirky yet down-to-earth drama queen who loves fiercely. I used to be a scientist, but now I'm learning to navigate the world of non-profit organizations. I love cooking, blogging, shopping, and music, and movies (Hans Zimmer is my favorite movie composer). Mr. Kettle and I had a short courtship and now we have a happy home with our cat-who-thinks-she's-people, Belle. We spend our days and nights with good food, live music, video games, family, and friends. Our wedding has become this wonderful excuse to bring together hundreds of people we can't bear to be without.
About Miss Kettle

After our meeting with our first photographer, I was really looking forward to having our meeting with our second photographer. From all the glowing reviews from Mima Kettle and FSIL Grand, I knew I’d enjoy that meeting as well.

They opted to do a conference-call meeting with Mr. Kettle and me because our schedules are horrendous and that’s the only way we’d be able to meet within a couple weeks. Mr. Kettle and I were at Mima and Poppa Kettle’s house when the call came in. The woman we spoke to was friendly and excited about our wedding. She was excited to show us the options for what they could do for us. And they were having a 40%-off sale. Winning!

Mr. Kettle really took the lead for this photographer, which made me very happy. After being so satisfied after our first interview, my excitement for these second photographers was surface level at best, so he provided the buoy of excitement.

She gave us her spiel, and it all sounded pretty lovely. They were able to provide the same services as the other people we met with. They knew our budget and said they could make it fit. Things were a la carte, but with that 40% off, I was hopeful that something could be worked out.

Then…well…I went from hopeful to just plain disheartened, y’all. She added up what we wanted and it came to a ridiculously high number. First, imagine you’re in Chicago at Chicago prices. Then read through what all we wanted and see what number you guess in your head. I want to read this in the comments section, people.

  1. Photography for the whole day at one location, including getting-ready shots. Basically 9.5 hours.
  2. Videography, also for the whole day.
  3. A portrait setup for the reception.
  4. A wedding album for us, including copyrights to all photos available on a disc.
  5. A wedding video, plus all the unedited footage on separate DVDs.

Her price? $1,000? Nope. $2,000? Keep going. $3,000? Not there yet. $4,000? Take out the album and the rights to the photos and the unedited footage of the wedding, and we came in at just under $4,000. That’s including the the 40% discount.

After regaining consciousness, I asked Mr. Kettle to put her on hold. I then asked him to see what our budget we told her ($2,500) could get us. She ran through the numbers again and told us we could get a photographer and videographer for the reception, pictures of our wedding party during the cocktail hour (not before like I’d much prefer), and the main highlights of the reception (i.e., the first two hours). We still would have to order everything else a la carte.

I was just…I still can’t find words for how I felt in that moment. Those types of prices were why I gave up on photographers originally and began to get stalked by them on my email and voicemail. So we could shell over $2,500 (before taxes and tip and travel charges) and get our photos and videos taken. We just wouldn’t be able to get any record of it without shelling out almost that much again. That’s right—if we got everything we were being offered by the first place.

I was suddenly glad the meeting wasn’t face-to-face because I know I have no poker face, and I would’ve given her one of these:

Personal photo: thinly veiled displeasure face

Mr. Kettle heard the rest of her options. She asked us if there was any wiggle room in our budget, and he said maybe. She said she would get with her boss and see what they could do for us.

I didn’t know how they could get the price down any further on top of already having the sale for 40% off. After having seen their pictures, I knew we’d get a great photographer, if it was in our budget.

I may be the only person not shocked by the price. But then again, my mom is a wedding photographer so I’m well-aware of prices. As soon as I read the “9.5 hours of coverage,” I thought $3,000 for that alone.

i guessed $4000, but then, I live in DC where it’s possibly more expensive than Chicago when the word “Wedding” is entered into the cost equation!

I’m sadly not shocked by the price either. Quality in photography costs, but I hope you guys were able to find a photographer you really like that fit your budget!

I’m with delovelyjenn - I guessed at a minimum, $5000. Particularly in Chicago! It’s so disheartening, though, when you have your hopes up and they’re dashed like that. Surely you can find a better deal by asking around?

I don’t know if you know this but Bella Pictures is actually a HUGE company. With a sales team and all. So I don’t know if you would have the option of selecting A photographer and have absolute confirmation that will be the photographer you will get. When I found that out during my search I ran the other way. Not to mention that yes they are very pricey. Our wedding was in NYC and I was able to find an amazing photographer at UNDER 3K. I got 2 photographers, my main for 11 hours, the secondary for about 6 hours. Online viewing and a DVD at full res with all copyrights, all edited images. IMHO a professional album can always be added on later and a videographer is better booked seperately.
Best of luck!

my guess was: $2,500 for mid-grade photography, $1,500 for videography, $500 for portrait session. I’m in the San Francisco Bay Area and some photographers whose work I really loved started at 5 grand…. yea I had to let that go.

good luck!

And oh P.S. for all that you want I think with a lot of researching, negotiating you should be able to get that for ~4K. My photographer was bloody fantastic, videographer OK and I did not want a pro album but had I added that I would have came in total around 4K.

I’m not shocked either… videography+photography=spendy (unless you go with a super newbie) Photography alone is a big part of our budget - it’s just a lot!! I’m sorry!

I like the first photographer so much better! Their photos are a lot nicer. I know it’s a hard task choosing a photog - it took me 3 weeks of research to find one in our area that was good and had a decent rate. I live in Ottawa, Canada though and luckily, our prices aren’t too bad!

My guess was at least $8000 for what you wanted. We spent more than that for 8 hours of coverage for photo and video. Our vendors were high end, but with an album, we could have easily spent over $10K. $4000 honestly seems like a great deal, especially for a big city like Chicago.

I’m not shocked either, jaded by the wedding world. Our Los Angeles photographer is the biggest part of our budget next to food. Seriously. But have you tried the Pros? I think Mrs. Sand Dollar had a great experience with them. They’re a network of photographers and videographers. I think you can get what you want in your budget with them.

I am sadly not surprised either…in St. Louis (aka, the redheaded stepchild of Chicago), photos for approximately 10 hours (no video) and an “album credit” tends to run around $3,000. Maybe there is a student at Columbia or the Art Institute that could work - at least on the videography side of things?

Hi, I hope that if you do go with bella, their customer service is better than it was at my wedding a few years ago. We LOVED our photographer that they provided and we have great pictured from or day, but we had AWFUL customer service. In the year that we planned our wedding and the year after our wedding we had 5 different consultants and after a year after our wedding we still didnt have any album because of a mistake on their end. We eventually got our money back and made our own album. Good luck to you.

My guess was $6000 without the 40% off, so I was pretty close.

Interesting range of responses from you guys. I personally understood the $4000 price tag, but in no way intended to pay that much. I feel like we can get quality for less moolah. Let’s hope I’m right!
