Mrs. Magic, Chapel Hill, NC Age and Occupation: 30, Licensed Clinical Social Worker Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Researcher Engagement Date: December 1, 2009 Wedding Date: October 2011 Venue: Barn at Valhalla About Me: I’m a tall drink of water (5’10”!) and a Southern bride with an enormous appetite for Mexican food, good deals, anything French, and all things wedding! By day I am lucky enough to work with individuals with autism and their families. By night, I’m even luckier to be able to spend time hanging out with awesome friends, crafting, shopping, thinking about exercising, and kicking it with Mr. Magic and our two cats. I tend to have sudden, intense cravings that will not be denied (seafood enchiladas! new jeans!) and I’m prone to being a disorganized mess of anxiety and stress. After waiting (and waiting!) to get engaged, I am finally planning the colorful, fun, fabulously awesome Fall wedding of our dreams. In an effort to share the fun and craziness that is wedding planning, I’m gonna blog about it for y’all---the good, the bad, and the pretty!

Dress Doubt Disorder: Part 2

September 9th, 2011 @ 5:38 pm by Mrs. Magic

I am having another attack of dress doubt disorder!!!!!! Cue freak out here.

The good news is, unlike the last bout of this disorder (which is apparently cyclic), the doubt is not about my wedding gown. That is amazing and beautiful and basically the best dress in the world. Insert sigh of relief here.

The bad news is, the doubt is back and I think it’s here for a legitimate reason this time. You see, as a church going little girl raised in the South, my grandma taught me that you cannot wear white after Labor Day. And what color is my rehearsal dinner dress?

It’s super white and shiny! You know, for our casual NC bbq rehearsal dinner! Fail.

I bought this dress in the summer, when the birds were singing and the sun is shining. Now it’s all pumpkin spiced lattes and back to school and AFTER FREAKING LABOR DAY. My grandma would not approve of this.

So, what to do? Try to dye it (it’s polyester)? Sell it (it’s a size 4, brand new, in case you’re interested)? Try to “fall it up” with a cardigan and accessories? Embrace the whiteness and wear it, even if it’s a total mismatch with BBQ and hushpuppies?

Or…buy a new dress. Like, I don’t know…how about this one!

Anyone else get season confused when purchasing wedding attire?

In my opinion, I think you should wear WHATEVER you want to wear. Period. BUT, if it is going to drive you nuts, and I know how that is, why don’t you fall it up? A cute burnt orange or dark purple cardigan would look super cute! Add some jewels and you will look marvelous Or wear it like it is regardless of it being after Labor Day, it is an awesome dress either way :)

I love the white one. But I feel a little reluctant to wear white so close to my wedding day. I even avoided buying a white dress for my graduation party cause the next important occasion in my life was likely to be my wedding. BUT that’s just me, and your dress is BEAUTIFUL.

Being from the UK I don’t really get the whole, No white after Labor Day, rule. I say wear the dress and put a nice coloured cardigan over it!

This dress can absolutely make the transition to fall. Add a cute cardigan and some boots, and you’re a beautiful autumn bride-to-be.

Being from the U.S., I don’t even understand the rule of not wearing white after Labor Day. I think brides to be have the privilege to wear white no matter what. I like the idea of wear a cardigan over it, maybe some cute heels and colorful jewelry? ;) Best wishes.

I think you should wear your white dress and as you put it, “Fall it up.” The whole no white after labor day relates to when we women wore long, ankle length dresses that danced along the ground when we walked in the city. If you take that into consideration, no white makes sense, because then your dress would always be dirty.

Since that is no longer the case and your dress is adorable, I say, cute cardigan, some colored flats or boots and you are all set! Grandma would understand!

i just bought a white dress for my rehearsal dinner, and while there’s a little bit of concern because other people are saying you shouldn’t wear white to it… i kinda feel like it’s a good excuse to wear another cute white dress :D

I’m from Australia, so I have no idea what the tradition is. If it’s really important to you, then yes, change your dress. But if it’s not that important to you, and you think that it will just affect some others, then stick with the dress - it’s beautiful! I think most people expect you to wear white/white shades/soft pastels to your wedding events anyway?

I say, SCREW IT, it’s your pre-wedding day dress. Wear that white puppy! You deserve all the white you want. But, a cardigan may be fun with it. I’m bias on the cardigan thing though, because I have a sick problem & collection of them.

I believe someone on Wedding Bee posted a dye that works for polyester fabric that can be used at home. She was using it to dye her rehearsal dress to a sunny yellow color.

So Dye away if you really want to.

Or throw on a fall colored cardigan, a necklace and colorful heels.

I don’t think this rule applies for a bride. A bride can waer white for her wedding… Now I know this is for your rehersal dinner… Ur still the bride =D I really like the idea of wearing a cardingan and accessorize it into the Fall season =))

Girl, you can wear whatever the heck you want to your rehearsal dinner!!
And that “no white after labor day” rule is BOGUS. Not sure who made it up but it has not applied for at least a decade so rock any dress in any color you want. And we know you will rock it.

When it comes to wedding matters, I say rock the white as much as possible! It’s a great dress - wear it!

Someone recently told me that it’s ok to wear white after Labor Day, just not white SHOES. In any event, I agree with the ladies above. Wear it if you love it!!

Weddings are exempt from all labor day rules! Besides Stacy says its okay to wear white after labor day!! Your wedding dress is white after all isn’t it? I am definitely wearing a white dress for my rehearsal and am from the middle of the bible belt, conservative loving South. You are the bride. You get to wear whatever you want.

You can do whatever you want…that white after labor day rule is obsolete anyway, isn’t it? But for the occasion, I’d probably buy another dress, something cute and comfy and cheap.
