Topping the Cake

September 9th, 2011 @ 2:56 pm by Mrs. Funnel Cake

For many months I’ve been thinking about cake toppers from afar… and with less than two months until the big day it’s time to address this decision. Apparently I’m one of those crazy brides who wants a custom cake topper. Can you blame me?

One look at Mrs. Tartlet’s cake is enough to convince anyone they need their own personalised couple. But what kind of cake topper did I want? (And I say “I” here because Mr. Funnel Cake really doesn’t give a crap what we do for this.)

At first, I thought it would be so cute to get animal cake toppers because Mr. Funnel Cake always calls me “his little elephant” or “his little piggie.” But I don’t really have any animal I refer to him as… except some vague connection with tigers. Then I thought how maybe animal toppers do not quite fit into our classic, traditional and “Swiss” theme we have going on. Fine. No animals.

So what else is there?

There is an overabundance of custom cake toppers available on Etsy, but they all have one problem in common. They are TOO DAMN EXPENSIVE. Really.

Hive, as much as I love the little wooden people, I really could not justify spending so much on a “frivolous” wedding expense. Sure, I could afford it, but on principle I can’t pay 100 bucks for something I feel like I could do myself.

Uh oh… did you catch that? “…I could do myself.”

…I smell a DIY project here. Time for another random Etsy wedding search!

I started contacting sellers to see who would ship to Switzerland, despite the fact that my US$ Paypal is linked to my mother’s address in Ohio. Yes, I’m that shady person always asking people to ship to my unverified foreign address so I can pay in my native US currency. (Gasp! The horrors!)

Can you guess which dolls I ended up buying?

I am having the same cake topper problemo! I love these cute little custom ones, but there’s something about paying over 100 bucks for that I agree is just nutzo crazy to me. Makes me itch. I love those little super round head ones. They remind me of those “little people” Fisher Price toys from childhood.

I just spontaneously ordered peg people to paint myself. They came in this week (my wedding is next weekend), and I am frantically painting a little detail here and a little detail there. It’s so much fun!

I agree with the crazy cost of people toppers. Might have fallen in love with a Lenox Beauty and the Beast topper (Belle and man-version of Beast dancing from the final scene) that costs $200 + shipping and tax. Yeah right. Went with the traditional monogram that I bought with craft store coupons. Whoot. My guess is the second or fourth ones :)

$690 for that last cake topper?!?!?!? WTH? I was kind of sad at first we wouldn’t be having a topper but at least it is one less decision I have to make. I’m going to guess you went with the 2nd wooden doll pictured (mylittleniche).

We bought a custom cake topper from Etsy. Mudcards is the seller. TOTALLY worth it. Total was $70 dollars and that included shipping. She worked with us and even changed things that I wanted changed after it was assembled. I recommend her times a million.

I’m a pretty crafty lady. I’m crafty with knitting/crocheting, I’m crafty with scrapbooking, quilling, and other paper projects … but I’m not crafty with painting at all. Especially little tiny details! I figure we can use some of the money we’re saving by making our own flowers and splurge on one of the lollipopworkshop cake toppers. =)

I’m the same, I have a hard time paying so much for something I feel I can do myself.

I used to have the last set of dolls, I used them for pose references when drawing

I love the second option from mylittleniche, so cute

no, and you must tell me, I must know!! I cannot believe how expensive those cake toppers are… the LOVE one was how much?! $90?!?! For a few refrigerator magnets?! You have got to be kidding me!! I made mine as well, cost me zero dollars! These people are scam artists. Good for you for DIYing, I can’t wait to see the finished product!!

I’m amazed you found someone to ship to a foreign address on your paypal. What magic words did you use to make this happen?

Oooh I can’t wait to see what you come up with. I caved and bought one :( But there is no way I am as crafty as you so mine would have ended up looking like two blobs with a smaller blob on top.

@amber: It looks like the etsy seller closed her shop because of surgery… but she’s hoping to reopen soon. Try back next month!
