The Dress that Wasn’t

September 12th, 2011 @ 2:33 pm by Miss Snapdragon

When we first started wedding planning, I knew exactly what kind of dress I wanted to wear, and it looked like this:

People

That’s right. Pink. Soft, beautiful, ballerina pink. I wanted it even before Reese stole my style!

I quickly realized that if I wanted a pink dress, I’d need to have it custom made.

I visited a number of salons, and their pink options were really just flesh-toned. “Blush” is a popular color right now, so I had high hopes, but I learned that blush does not equal pink. Every supposedly pink dress I tried on looked like much more tea-stained or yellowed than that perfect pink of my visions. I didn’t find one dress that was available in a true baby pink.

Lucky for me, I have connections to an amazing seamstress who specializes in this sort of thing! We started the process of looking for fabrics, but I continued dress shopping [just in case]. Finally, I visited a salon that had a perfectly pink dress hanging on the wall. The design wasn’t what I wanted at all, but the color and fabric was exactly the thing. I decided I had to try it on—just to test out the color!

I slipped the skirt over my head; the saleslady zipped me in. I turned to face the mirror, and…the color looked awful on me. I looked like a ghost! Now, I am someone who thinks anybody can wear whatever the heck they want. Rules are boring. But…I had to admit to myself that a crisp white looked much, much, much better on me than the pink. My skin is just so fair!

Here’s proof… and this is me with a Level 2 spray tan.

I blind people with my whiteness!

I will be honest—I was crushed. My heart was set on a pink dress. However, just trust me when I say this was not going to happen. It was not a good idea, and I would have regretted it.

I know you are all crying in your oatmeal for me, so just let me perk you up with this spoiler: that I did get a happy ending. I may not be wearing a pink dress come March, but the Universe paid me back for my unfortunate Nordic genetics.

What about you? Was there a dress that broke your heart?

OMG I never considered a pink dress until I read your post. But I think it’ll look even worse in me cause I’m reaaaally tan. Good thing you noticed it wasn’t your color before you purchased any fabric for it.

totally! i had initially had my heart set on a simple beach dress! I was intrigued with all the ones by Nicole Miller. then i found out they looked a lot better on skinny models than a girl with hips! Basically, i had to find a new silhouette than what i imagined. i would like to hear about your happy ending!

yea… I fell in love with a dress twice as much as I was willing to pay - Not that we couldn’t afford it, but I just was to frugal to pull the trigger :(

I have Nordic genetics as well, so I feel your pain :) That dress is beautiful, but I am sure you will look gorgeous in whatever you chose! Can’t wait to see it.

I’m sorry the pink didn’t work out! It sounds like you found something perfect and beautiful though and I can’t wait to see!

The first dress I fell in love with was a Monique Llhuillier and it was also “blush” - YEARS before Reese’s pink dress… :) It was this dress: http://www.preownedweddingdresses.com/dresses/6827

We had kind of a huge wedding and I knew I wouldn’t be able to deal with everyone asking why my dress wasn’t white, etc., so I went with ivory. But, yeah, I totally get your pink dress love… :::sigh:::

Maybe you could do a pink sash, pink flowers, pink BM dresses? I LOVE your coloring btw. You’ll be a gorgeous bride in your white dress!

I’m pale, too and I was also looking for a colored dress initially (pale gray, taupe, rum pink), but I ended up in antique ivory, which was way more flattering!

The first dress I ever fell in love with was a delicate pink lace sheath dress that I saw in a magazine. I couldnt find it ANYWHERE, and I still dream about it a little. In the end though I love the dress I wore on my wedding day, and I think it suited my skin colour better too- like you, I am very white! Someone actually mistook me for a ghost one night. Ah well, apparently us pale girls age well!

That blush pink color is terrible on me too, as well as about every shade of off-white! Too bad for pale us. I’m thinking my wedding dress will need to be white white!

I haven’t had a chance to try on any dresses yet but i am madly in love with a Vera wange dress that hillary duff wore for her wedding, she wore it in blush but i want it in chamagne, I showed a pic to my mother who was so thoroughly unimpressed in fact no one i have shown it to seems all that impress3ed to be honest

That pink dress is gorgeous! I had my heart set on a lacy long sleeved dress. But I’m only 5′0″ and my torso isn’t long enough for such a dress. I wasn’t about to pay to have it made, so I had to move on. Luckily, I’m in love with my dress, but I will be begging my tall friends to take a look at the lace dress so I can live vicariously!
