A Cautionary Tale of Stamps

September 13th, 2011 @ 3:53 pm by Miss Warbler

With our business cards tucked safely away inside the envelopes, I drove to the post office. I was on the hunt for the new Garden of Love stamps. I was in luck! My post office had just gotten them in that week. So I did what any bride would do and bought five booklets.

I took a sealed envelope to get it weighed so I would have the exact postage. Since our STDs are magnets, they were a little heavier, and I knew the postage was bound to be more than expected. The nice woman at the counter complimented me on the envelopes and told me they would cost 64 cents. They didn’t have any nice 20-cent stamps, so I went home and checked online. I decided on the Herb stamps. Even though I only needed 20-cent stamps, I got these 29-cent stamps ’cause they’re so puurty.

So, 44-cent stamps + 29-cent stamps = 73 cents worth of postage. More than enough, right? Wrong. It turns out, I still didn’t have enough postage. After my Herb stamps arrived, I quickly stuck all of them onto the envelopes, and Mr. Warbler and I headed to the post office on my lunch break. Yes, lunch break. I was that desperate to get them out into the world! Before I tell you what happened, let me show you these beauties.

When I went back to the post office, I nervously asked the man behind the counter if they hand cancelled envelopes. I had read on other blogs that some post offices did NOT hand cancel and that it was really hit or miss sometimes. After he said “Yes,” I breathed a huge sigh of relief and happily handed them off to him. But after he weighed one envelope, he told me that it would cost 84 cents to mail them and that I needed 11 more cents. “No,” I said. “I came last week and had them weighed. I was told it would cost 64 cents. Weigh it again. I have enough postage.” The man shook his head and said, “If you want them hand cancelled you need 11 more cents. Hand-cancelling services are extra.”

Ugh. I looked at Mr. Warbs for help, and he just shrugged and said, “OK, give us ten-cent and one-cent stamps.” But I was mortified. How could I have forgotten to ask about hand cancelling last week? I had heard that there was no charge for hand cancelling, but I should have verified. Idiot! At this point I just wanted to preserve the stamp harmony. Adding extra non-matching stamps next to my beautiful ones made me want to cry. I asked the man behind the counter if we could just forgo the hand cancelling and mail them as is. But that was a no-go. Since I was mailing magnets they couldn’t run them through the machines anyway. They had to be hand cancelled. Big sigh. I could have run home and added an extra Herb stamp to the envelopes, but it seemed like more trouble than it was worth. I reluctantly added the extra ten- and one-cent stamps and destroyed my masterpiece. The end result looked like this.

Not what I envisioned at ALL

To add salt to my wounds, the man took out a big rubber stamp and stamped “DO NOT BEND” in huge red letters on the bottom right-hand corner. At this point I had to get out of there. Mr. Warbs tried to cheer me up by saying no one was going to care about the envelope anyway. Even though I know he’s right, I still feel moody about the whole thing. I don’t have any complaints about the way my STDs came out, which is all that matters. If anything, I’m glad I went through all of this with the STDs and NOT the invites.

So a word of advice to fellow brides: don’t forget to ask questions! If you’re going to hand cancel your invites or STDs, let the postal worker know when they’re weighing your envelope. Trust me, it’s best to stray on the safe side. Is anyone else going to hand cancel?

That doesn’t make any sense that they would need extra postage to hand cancel. I feel like if they were going to charge for the extra labor that they would just charge you a fee and you would pay that rather then need more postage to mail them… Did you check with any other USPS’ to see if they could do it without the fee?

That’s odd…I had large magnet STDs too and they didn’t require me to hand cancel them (but I didn’t ask for them to either). When I was researching sending magnets all I found was that you needed to send them so the magnet side faced the back so that if they stuck to something the address side would still be showing.

Your mailman sounds a little fishy…what if you hadn’t told him there were magnets inside?? Would they have to hand cancel them then and would they have charged you?

I am really pissed off for you, because I think your post office man lied. At my post office, hand cancelling the first 50 envelopes was free, then 5 cents for each additional envelope. There is no way these services can be priced willy nilly from one post office to another. Grrr. But if it makes you feel better, I love the many stamps look! And the tiffany lamp and clock stamps are cute.

I have a stupid question: What does it mean to hand cancel?

I had magnets and they went through the machines just fine. Everyone received their STD without issues. And I just stuck mine in the big blue drop box at my post office after hours!

I know this is not supposed to be funny but I LOL-ed when I got to the part about the big red stamp. They really don’t look that bad, kind of eclectic. :)

@Miss High Wire: Hand canceling means that a human stamps a mark over the postage stamp (so the stamp can’t be reused), instead of putting it through a machine to do the same thing… its suppose to keep them from getting torn up, bent, etc…

hmm… it does sound weird to be charged extra. On the bright side - I really like the combo of stamps. They all have a vintagy feel and the combo of colours is great.

I feel the same way about how the postage looks on the envelope! I thought I was just being crazy! I’m about to send out my invitations and wanted not only pretty wedding related stamps, but I’m also going to have them hand canceled. Our invites are card pockets and I’m spending a lot of time making them perfect of how they look lined up, so I thought it was best to spend the extra postage as I don’t want them bending in a feeder machine. The part that sucks though, is my envelope only needs 64 cents and the hand canceling is only 20 cents more. I refuse to have different looking stamps, sooo I’m having to bite the bullet and pretty much put extra postage on each envelope…not really that big of a deal since its only 4 cents per envelope that I’m wasting, but I totally understand your frustration.

Hmmmm…I had magnets too. I used the wedding flower 44 cent postage and sent them on their way. Everyone, except for 4 ppl, received them with no problems.
I understand how you feel. But it doesn’t look bad. Don’t sike yourself out. ::Smile::

I like your stamps! No worries. I agree that all seems very odd, but hey - at least it’s behind you now ! :)

I wasn’t charged extra for hand cancelling. I made several trips through- I did 10-15 at a time.

I think all the stamps together look cool! And my post office definitely charges per envelope to hand cancel, so you’re not alone!

@Miss High Wire-I had no idea what it was either, so I wouldn’t say it’s a stupid question!
@mittens-Thanks for clarifying :o)

I went through the same thing (but with invitations) at the post office with the stamps and postage. I mailed them in little boxes, and they got big red stamps all over them!! I almost started crying when she ruined my pretty boxes…

I totally understand that you had a vision and the postman ruined it for you… But if you think about it, its kind of charming to have the mismatched postage and big red stamp. Think about how’ll it’ll look 20 years from now when we aren’t even mailing anything anymore! It’ll be so vintage! :)
