The Favor of Your Presents

September 13th, 2011 @ 2:49 pm by Mrs. Ladyfingers

I’m a firm believer in the power of the edible favor. I’ve never been to a wedding with a non-perishable sendaway, and I’m not a fan (for us) of anything but. This is not to say I don’t love things such gifts as wildflower seeds, mixed CDs, recipe books and the like. Honestly, I just don’t want guests to leave their favors behind if I can’t eat the leftovers. I also don’t want to hand out anything that guests can’t easily transport back home on an airplane.

Favor Idea #1: Italian cookies

With all that in mind, I decided a few months back to purchase trays of Italian cookies from one of my favorite stores EVER — Mazzaro’s Italian market — and pack up three to five cookies per guest with a cute little note.

However, a couple of months ago, we had a site visit at our venue and decided all our rentals. And our rental budget thereby doubled.

So we temporarily cut favors from the overall budget. But then, miraculously, a gracious wedding-industry friend offered to contact our rental company since she does a lot of work with them at her own venue — and we got a 25% friend-of-vendor discount. Favors were officially back on the table!

Favor Idea #2: Homemade fudge

But the Italian cookies had lost some of their luster. I wanted something a little more personal. So, to bring a bit of my mother’s memory into the event and produce something both super personal AND ultra yummy, I decided to make her fudge recipe. It shouldn’t be too difficult for roughly 60 people — and it’s damn delicious. I figured all I’d need to do is a quick trial run to see 1. How much fudge one pan makes, to calculate how much I’d need to bake the week of, and 2. How long the fudge “keeps” without getting funky (i.e., could I bake it three days in advance and it still be 100% edible).

I was excited about this plan for about 15 minutes, but then the idea of a trial run — even one with fudgy results — started to sound burdensome, no less buying a double boiler, finding tempered chocolate (I had a really sad incident melting chocolates this past Christmas that taught me the importance of both), and baking three or four pans of this stuff the week of.

Favor Idea #3: Double the cupcakes, double the fun

That’s when I was struck by inspiration: We’re already having cupcakes in lieu of traditional cake. Why not just order twice the number of cupcakes as guests, buy some takeout boxes, and encourage them to eat a cupcake now and take one home for later? It would cost less than the cookies; though it would cost more than the fudge, it would require much much less effort — a quick call to adjust quantity with our baker, and no wrapping of favor boxes or bags since guests would self-serve.

After a quick conversation with our caterer, we determined they could get us white takeout boxes for about $0.50 each and keep the cake counter stocked with them throughout the night. I whipped up a cute little sign directing guests to bring something sweet home with them. I thought up a cute little way to decorate the boxes.

Not like this — but still, aren’t these boxes adorable?/Image via My Wedding Reception Ideas

Then, I skidded once again. Decorations for the boxes? A cake table sign? I seem incapable of doing things with half measures, so this spelled a whole ‘nother full-fledged DIY project, and one that would likely not come cheaply, after the cost of the boxes, the paper, and more.

The current state of our favors

At the moment, then, the future of our favors are in limbo. I think the best contender at the moment are the cupcakes. I keep getting hung up, though, on how many people would actually take cupcakes with them. What if they didn’t even eat any at all? We’d be left with so many cupcakes, even we couldn’t finish them. Would it be just as good to get the same number of cupcakes we’d always planned and order a couple dozen takeout boxes, sans decorations, in case people decided to take theirs home rather than eat them there? In other words, forgo favors altogether?

Did you always have a concrete favor plan? Did you abandon favors altogether as being wasteful, too expensive, too time-consuming, or none of the above? If you did them, what did you go with? And if you did self-serve takeaway favors, how did you display and organize the “taking away”?

I’m doing fudge. My mom and I have very easy non double boiler recipes that we make for random occasions. (They were simple googled recipes of “easy fudge” that everyone still raves about). And fudge keeps pretty well outside of the fridge, just wrap it in wax paper so it doesn’t dry out. (If you wanna test out the recipes feel free to message me. I just have to dig them up).

If you like the cupcake idea, but are concerned with people actually even eating them, you might wanna check out those trendy mini cupcakes. I know Baked by Melissa, which is super popular around here, now ships nationwide (she got a mention in Brides Magazine). Her cupcake flavors are very original (tie-dye, smores, etc.) and cute. Everyone always freaks out in the office when someone brings them in. You can pop a whole one in your mouth like a potato chip. Just an idea. :)

Was at a wedding in May where we got 2 cupcakes as favors. Most of us were staying in an adjoining hotel - we enjoyed ourselves quite a bit during the reception (a.k.a. drank a lot) and the party continued in the suite that me and FI had gotten. Waking up the next morning were empty bottles and about 50 uneaten or one-bite taken cupcakes. It seemed so sad!

I’m going more towards a small container of olive oil or homemade limoncello. We got engaged in Italy, so we are trying to bring a little of that into the reception.

I like how personal the fudge idea is, but i can’t imagine that you would want to add yet another project in the week before the wedding!

I think people would absolutely eat/take home cupcakes- can you say post-party-late-night munchies?

I believe and maintain that favors are unnecessary. As my friend’s MOH, I hate seeing her budget in $$$ for chocolate when she’s having cake and a massive cookie table (tradition in my area). When I go to weddings, I can’t eat it all!

Also, I’ve worked in catering and food will even get left behind. The only time I didn’t see them left was at a wedding around the 4th and they gave out sparklers.

Out of the three: I say the fudge due to sentimental value.

Candy buffet. Solves your edible problem and the budget is alleviated by buying either in bulk online or bit by bit in the finals months. Of course, I hand dipped pretzels in white chocolate two days before my wedding to go on my candy buffet, so I also like the fudge idea. What it boils down to is this - does doing something like that the week of the wedding stress you out now? That’s not going to change suddenly just because it’s your wedding week. My biggest advice, know your limitations and compensate for them.

We’re doing a candy/dessert buffet; making sugar cookies and cake pops well in advance and freezing them, ordering mini cheesecakes from a local bakery, ordering cupcakes instead of a traditional cake, and ordering lots of candy! That way we have a little homemade flair but we’re not going crazy trying to make favors for 150 guests. =)

We had the favors laid out at each place setting. No sign, no extra table. Easy peasy - done! This was something I fretted about in the month prior. Because we had edible (read: chocolate) favors, I worried the heat would melt them. The weather cooperated and the simplest plan was put into use.

I like the idea of edible favors because what your guests don’t eat or take home, YOU get to eat. We wound up with 20 boxes of truffles… and still have a few boxes left to eat (three months later).

I vote for the fudge. Imagine how many of your guests have the same feeling you do about making homemade fudge (no way! - too time consuming!)… but also consider, who doesn’t love homemade fudge? :)

Maybe you can get your bridesmaids together to help make the fudge in exchange for some yummy wine, good music, and pizza? It could be a fun, relaxing night of girl bonding time.

Honestly, I don’t think the favors are a *huge* deal, but of your current options? I am feeling the fudge. As others have mentioned, I love how personal it is!!! But do whatever comes easiest lovely lady(fingers)!

I personally like the fudge idea as well. That’s what I was going to do… until I remembered the disaster that happened the last time I tried (couldn’t get the burn smell out of my house for a week!)

I have since come up with the idea that I will do shortbread cookies. I make these every christmas, they’re super easy and everyone raves about them! 4 ingredients is just my speed! I’ll cut them out in little tiny circles and stack them in celowrap with a bow and some sort of tag. If you want the recipe I’d be happy to share!

So after I posted I got thinking about fudge again…

I found this site - http://oldtymefudgerecipes.com/exoticfudgerecipes.php

Seems to have some yummy recipes and they seem pretty simple, if anyone’s interested. :)

Can’t you freeze the fudge? I make fudge every Christmas and cut it in bite size pieces and then freeze it (so I can eat it throughout the year). It lasts at least nine months (at least that’s how old my current batch is!) and tastes as good as day one!

I found boxes on Oriental Trading website and i am doing chocolate covered pretzels for favors. I work at a unique grocery store and we have already made chocolate dipped pretzels for 2.99 a bag and it ends up being cheaper to buy them already made and using pink melted chocolate from the craft store to drizzle on to add our accent color…. semi homemade and so tasty…

but oriental trading has cupcake boxes to not sure how good of a deal they are

We are doing a set of coasters for each person. The coasters are tiles from Home Depot decopauged with scrap book paper and lined with felt to avoid scratches. It is a lot of work, but I think everyone will really enjoy them.

@Mrs. Pain au Chocolat: Mmmm… truffles. These comments are making me hungry! We’re definitely leaning toward the fudge now, and if we do, we’ll definitely have them at each place setting!

@Hydrangea09: Very good point! And really, I’m being a brat. This fudge takes like 2 seconds to make. And I love the idea of the girl bonding!

@Craftygirl81: Thanks for the link!

@cindy: I hadn’t even thought about this! How long does it take to defrost? How do you defrost it without it getting all grody and wet?

@nell_43_43: Great idea!

I have to agree with PPs and say the fudge is a great idea! Cindy’s point of freezing would work especially well if you had a vacuum sealing system! Could your BMs help you out? Maybe hold a fudge making/girly movie night! I am a firm believer that our BMs hands can be put to work…. as long as we are all having fun doing it! lol

Oh, also, I have been looking at “take-out” style boxes from our local Dollar Tree. They are plain white but would be very easy to personalize! (Due to a BBQ style potluck reception I want guests to be able to take food home with them… less for us to clean up!)

I don’t want to be harsh but thinking as a guest, I think it would be very unlikely that I would take an extra cupcake home with me. It’s almost like getting a doggy bag at a wedding - “I couldn’t fit it in now, so can I wrap this to go?” or if I already had one, I would feel like I was taking more than my share.
I understand your predicament and love edible favours, but having the same favour as the dessert kind of seems a bit half-hearted to me.

We did jam, and just piled them all on a table with a nice sign near the exit.
