When Cake Tasting Goes Wrong

September 15th, 2011 @ 5:10 pm by Miss Warbler

A few weeks ago, Mr. Warbs, MOH J5, and I suited up in our sweat pants to taste some cakes! Let me tell you, I was super excited about this. The bakery had come highly recommended from our florist and is in the same neighborhood as our venue. When I called them up for a consultation, they informed me that they were in the middle of moving to a new location (even closer to our venue) and should be open the weekend of August 20th. At that point, that was three weeks away. I happily confirmed the appointment and regularly checked in via emails and phone calls. Cake is serious business.

The day finally arrived, and we scooted off to Thousand Oaks, which was about an hour drive. I personally blame the Kardashians for all the traffic; Kim K. was getting married and I think that’s her hood. When we pulled up in front of the address, we were faced with…an empty store. Ahhhh! At first I was afraid they had gone out of business, but Mr. Warbs reminded me that they had just moved. We were at the old address. D’oh! All the time I spent drooling over cake, I had forgotten to get the new address. This time cake brain won out over bridal brain.

A quick phone call and Mr. Warbs’s scout-like senses, and we arrived at the new location, which looked like…an empty store. Deja vu? A glitch in the Matrix? You bet! While the store wasn’t empty, they were not completely open to the public, a fact the baker left out in our email string. We were told that we couldn’t go into the store and had to sit outside at a patio table. Red flag number one. After about 20 minutes of looking over photos and magazines, the baker brought out the cakes. I had expected to be presented with a nice assortment, kind of like these:

You know, the typical sample-cake presentation. Well, our cakes looked more like this:

Unfortunately, I forgot to charge my camera, so I didn’t take any photos. But those cakes looked bad, y’all. Real bad. I think the baker could tell from my expression that I was not pleased. She quickly told us that the guy in the kitchen (seriously, that’s what she called him) had slapped those together pretty quick, but on the day of the wedding they would look different. Um, am I supposed to take your word on that? After she went back into the store, the three of us dived into the cakes. We had marble with chocolate-chip custard, red velvet with cream-cheese filling, chocolate with rum custard, and a vanilla cake with vanilla filling. The cakes were bland and tasted as if they were days old, which the baker confirmed they were. Nobody liked the red-velvet cake or filling, which disappointed me because red velvet is my favorite cake. MOH J5 and I liked the rum custard the best. Mr. Warbs liked the chocolate-chip custard. However, we all agreed that we did NOT care for the cakes at all; we only liked the fillings. It was unanimous that this bakery would not make the cut.

The whole experience left a bad taste (literally) in my mouth. I don’t pretend to be an expert, but I’m pretty sure a bakery should have an open storefront during a cake-tasting appointment. The presentation was horrible, and the cakes tasted like a Betty Crocker mix. Not disgusting, but not what you would expect from a professional bakery. Also, if you give me cake and I don’t finish it all, you know something is wrong!

Has anyone else had a cake-gone-wrong experience?

Oh my goodness, what a bummer! Although that foot cake is pretty hilarious. Don’t these people know not to mess with a girl and her cake?

Ours went pretty well except that one cake out of the six tasted old. It was pretty, but old and dry and the nastiest cake I ever had. I’m sure it tasted fine when it was made. It was just old and tasted freezer burned so it could have been months old for all I know lol. It makes you wonder what you’ll be getting on the actual wedding day.

The second one we went to (and the one we ended up choosing) was a lot better except we had a tasting with another couple. And the other bride was a Debbie Downer. And the other groom kept saying he didn’t want to be there. My fiance and I enjoyed the cake (SO AMAZING!)and had a good time with our cake lady, but there was this awkward tension because the other couple wasn’t having as much fun.

Oh man, our first round of cake tasting left such a bad impression I actually told my mom, just pick somewhere, I don’t even care anymore. Which led my FI to find the closest ice cream store to try and convince me otherwise.
The first shop we went all the cakes tasted like cardboard. Seriously, cardboard. Not good :( The second shop I ended up just loosing it on the lady. We were only in town for 3 days and needed to make a decision and she didn’t have any cake ready and wanted to reschedule us to come in to test….
Luckily we found an excellent cake shop and now everytime I go home to visit we stop in for cupcakes. Delicious :)

Have you ever heard of cakewrecks.com? They’re all professionally made (and purchased) cakes that are just awful, and a good chunk of them are wedding cakes that brides paid for :S. If I were the brides I would be pretty upset, but ohhhh boy are they funny hehe

@mmgcope: Oh wow, I can’t imagine how awkward that must have been! Tasting with another couple? Never heard of that!
@zippitydoodah: Yes, that site is hilarious! I love the misspelled cakes the most!

Those first 2 images just made me want cake so badly… Never read cake posts when you’re hungry! I hope you found the perfect bakery.

One of my two cake tastings was similar to this. I could’ve sworn that the cakes were all box mixes and the icings were gross and overly sweet. Sick. On top of that, the decoration was horrible! The woman coudn’t manage a straight line to save her life.

Luckily the other tasting was insane, the most delicious cake ever with the most gorgeous structure and decor.

Keep looking; you’ll find it!

THEY SERVED YOU THREE-DAY OLD CAKE?!?!?

We had a bad cake tasting experience at the first place we tried. I forget if I blogged about it, but the cake I went in for tasted like armpit. It was a huge disappointment. We went with a different bakery.

@Miss Warbler: It would have been ok if they were having fun too. But the bride was being a brat, and the groom looked tired of it all. So sad.

How sad! After going to my sister’s cake testing (which was basically the opposite experience) I cannot imagine not polishing off the cake and frosting! We practically licked the plates (much to the amusement of the bakery employee). Good for you for not settling. I hope your next cake testing is more delicious!

I haven’t gone for my cake tasting yet… But I had heard some horror stories and seen some cake tastings gone wrong on Bridezilla (haha yes I know). I am really hoping that when I do go I do not have a bad experience, because I know myself and my facial expression will TELL IT ALL

I went to three different cake tastings and am SO glad I did! I thought I love the first place but I was proven wrong in the end I found the MOST amazing tasting cake ever. The lady I am using does it out of her home. Not only is it MUCH cheaper but I have never tasted a cake this good! I can’t wait until my wedding day and have another slice of that amazing cake.

Unbelievable! We are doing cake tastings in October and I hope all of our bakers are…. more legit than this. *fingers crossed*
But now you get to taste more (and better) cake!

@Miss Warbler: Hey I live in Thousand Oaks (and the Kardashians technically live in Calabasas)…we went to For Heavens Cakes which I thought were bland and boring and another bakery out here which I used to love, changed their recipes so they were out as well.
Ultimately, after a frustrated yelp search, I found our baker and OMGTHEYAREDELISH. If youre still looking, their company is called Fines Family Bakery, and though they are technically in West Hills, they do deliver (they are delivering our cake in T.O. and I know theyve delivered as far as Newport!). Give them a ring, they do charge $30 for a tasting however, but let me tell you..you WILL book them if you try their cakes. Trust me. Cake is my ‘thing’ and I havent looked back since the booking.

That is a H.A.M. They were lucky you stayed around and actually taste the cakes. I would have laughed and then left.

We did the first cake tasting and she gave us about 6 pieces of the nastiest and driest cake that I have ever had in my life. To make matters worse when she asked what kind of flavors we wanted I specifically said no banana because we both didn’t like it. She not only gave it to us but THAT WAS THE BIGGEST PIECE!

We ended up going with another baker that works from home so the cake was much better and priced so way under that quote the storefront gave… Guest at the wedding were so pleased and begging for seconds.
