Appreciating Country Music

September 16th, 2011 @ 4:13 pm by Mrs. High Wire

Okay, admission time: I used to be kind of a music snob…but that has changed significantly over time. Growing up I was really into just about every type of rock music and had a deep love for the Beatles (shout out to Mrs. Dumpling!). I still like that kind of music, but another genre has stolen my heart.

Country music was treated like the plague when I was in high school and I only brushed into pop music when I had a dance number to perform on my high school’s drill team. Country music was something I was pretty much never exposed to (yeah, even though I grew up in Texas) beside a random Wade Hayes cassette tape playing at my aunt’s house.

Once I wound up with Mr. High Wire, he introduced me to the real, soulful, country music and I fell head over heels for it all. The lyrics are timeless and relatable, the guitar playing is hypnotic, and the deep voices of guys like George Straight melt my heart.

It is a tough burden to carry, because there’s probably no way I could ever convince you it was worth listening to if you are in the “country music is evil” camp.

The point I’m getting at with all of this is what kind of music do we play for our guests? If it was just me and Mr. High Wire alone in a room, I’d have no problem playing 100% country music for the entire time. But I know some of our guests cringe at the thought of having to listen to country music for hours on end. So, we plan to keep it a happy mixture of country and other types of music.

I do want to put together a playlist showcasing the best stuff country music has to offer.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

P.S. We are completely and totally anti Taylor Swift, so she is banned from the wedding under all circumstances.

I love you’re anti Taylor Swift, i’m just uncontrollably laughing.
I’m in a similar problem, we’re soft rock, a dash of pop people, but most of our guest are into a local country variation which, altough it’s better for dancing, it’s not our favorite music.

i love country music! i’ve already decided that i want to play a little bit here and there ;) fi likes crazy indie music so i was a little concerned that our combined tastes were going to drive away guests, but he went with me to a friend’s wedding and realized he’s going to have to tame our uncommon tastes down a bit to prevent rioting!

I love that you’ve come to the “dark side,” haha. I vote anything by the Zac Brown Band or The Band Perry. Also, there are tons of timeless sweet slow songs by John Michael Montgomery. My fiance and I will also be trying to balance that playlist of country and everything else, good luck!

my hubby and I love country music, but we love other stuff too. so we had a great mix of hip hop, old rock and roll, oldies and country.

I know you’ll be able to find a good mix for all who attend!

Can’t really go wrong with Jonny Cash, Walk the Line is one of my favorite songs for weddings. As well as Ring of Fire ;-)

Also, high-five on your Taylor Swift Stance.

Craig morgan: bonfire
charlie daniels band: devil went down to georgia

Blackhawk is some of my all time favorite, but some are weird for weddings. Alan Jackson has some great party songs and beautiful slow songs. Then there are the ultimate Blake Shelton and Brooks & Dunn. Sorry I could go on forever. If you want some older country suggestions, let me know…I has tons of useless knowlegde for that.

We love country music too and had some interspersed throughout our reception playlist. Here’s some of the country songs we used:

Bonnie Raitt- Not the Only One
John Berry- Your Love Amazes Me
Keith Whitley- When You Say Nothing at All
Randy Travis- Forever and Ever, Amen
Ronnie Milsap- Pure Love
Vince Gill- Whenever You Come Around
Zac Brown Band- Free/Into the Mystic mix
George Strait- I Cross My Heart

And I Cross My Heart was the song our photographer chose for our slideshow. :)

I have to tell you I love some country music. But its mainly music that could qualify as cross-over (stuff that sounds more soulful or is slow tempo or anything Carrie Underwood). I hate twangs with a passion. I wish more artists would try to branch out of Nashville (or that people would be more accepting of that).

We did a mix because we both have family that avidly hate country music. But we listen to it all the time, so there were certain songs that were a must. We did a destination wedding, but these are some of the songs we chose:

Summertime – Kenny Chesney
Toes - Zack Brown
It’s five o’clock somewhere - Alan Jackson/Jimmy Buffett
Friends in low places - Garth

If you like the “real, soulful” country music, as you put it, you might really like Texas Country. Type in Eli Young Band to Pandora and you’ll get all the really good Texas Country songs, except for Pat Green who sold out on Texas, left and went to Nashville.

Ditto on Taylor Swift. I don’t even consider her to be Country…she’s more pop.

Gotta throw in some old country and play some Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Hank Jr, and Waylon Jennings. And, my two of my favorites - Gary Allan and Chris Ledeux!

Ooo, and don’t forget Reba!

I could go on and on, but I’ll stop there.
*and apparently I like a lot of male country singers*

We’re actually having a country cover band!! We haven’t picked one yet, but 95% of the people attending are into country music, and it really fits with our location! Pretty much anything George Strait, Brad Paisley, Garth Brooks and Alan Jackson are musts :) I’m sure most DJ’s can come up with a mix of country/pop/oldies that everyone will enjoy. It’s usually the songs themselves but the tempo and mood the music sets!
Good luck!

If you’re looking for country that will appe to the masses, anything by rascal flatts, keith urban, shania twain, faith hill, or just people who can so top non-country charts. And the cute kid who won American Idol has that deep voice like King George.
