About Mrs. Funnel Cake

DIY Makeup

September 16th, 2011 @ 6:54 pm by Mrs. Funnel Cake

I’ve been having a hard time contacting hair and makeup vendors in Columbus. Basically… I email them and they ignore me. It’s been rather fruitless. Luckily my mother remembered that a friend of brother Funnel Cake that is a hair stylist, so I asked her if she would do my hair for the big day and that’s set. But makeup… makeup, makeup makeup… what shall I do for that?

Having recently started working in the beauty industry where appearance is key, I decided to use this as an excuse to order my very first haul from Sephora. (Which meant shipping to my mother’s house in Ohio, since they don’t ship to Switzerland and then having her repack and send to me.) I went a little crazy and bought myself a ton of brushes, which I’ve never owned before, and all the necessary tools for Mrs. Rainbow’s Ace Your Face tutorials. After reading and re-reading Mrs. Rainbow’s guides, I went off practising and here are the results! (You can tell I ignored Mrs. Rainbow’s brow tutorial for now…)

Look #1:

DIY Makeup : wedding columbus makeup 1029 1029

Left - No makeup.

Right - Foundation and powder.

DIY Makeup : wedding columbus makeup 2024 2024

Left - I tried contouring. Not sure if I was successful.

Right - Smokey eyes and lush lips.

…and the results:

DIY Makeup : wedding columbus makeup 4018 4018

DIY Makeup : wedding columbus makeup 5019 5019

DIY Makeup : wedding columbus makeup 6018 6018

I’m pretty happy with this look, but let’s see another trial.

Look #2:

DIY Makeup : wedding columbus makeup 7016 7016

Left - No makeup. (And God, I look horrible! Trying the flash out to show what horrible things the camera can do to you.)

Right - Foundation and powder

DIY Makeup : wedding columbus makeup 8012 8012

Left - Another attempt at contouring. Is it more noticeable when the flash is washing everything out? I mean… god look at those hollow cheek bones I have!

Right - Blush and subtle eye colour

DIY Makeup : wedding columbus makeup 9011 9011

Add some sassy lipstick and mascara!

….now the results:

DIY Makeup : wedding columbus makeup 10012 10012

This is a much more “nude” look on the eyes.

DIY Makeup : wedding columbus makeup 11010 11010

DIY Makeup : wedding columbus makeup 1209 1209

So, let’s compare:

DIY Makeup : wedding columbus makeup 3024 3024

Look #1 above and look # 2 below.

DIY Makeup : wedding columbus makeup 1307 1307

I’ve still been playing with my new eyeshadows every day when I get ready for work and I may do a few more “trials” before the big day. Which look do you prefer?

I like the second look better, I think the first one is more appropriate for evenings and the second look is better for the daytime, so I say go by your ceremony time. I think that the first look overpowers your pretty green eyes though, just a bit.

I think they both look wonderful, great job! But just for the heck of it….you should try and see what lip #1 looks like with eyes #2. That might be a good look too.

I like the second trial eye shadow but I think the first trial one looks better in you, also I loved the lips in the second one :).

I think @ruffledbride is onto something… Lip #1 with Eyes #2! They both look great, but I agree with @Annabelle86 you don’t want to overshadow those pretty greens!

I wish I could pull off a smokey eye… :)

Also, thanks for linking to Rainbow’s tutorials- I forgot all about them. And since you know my make-up woes right now, they are much needed!

Oh i like the smokey eye look! It looks like something for a special day - especially if you go for the natural look most days.

I love the smoky eye, too! I’m not sure which foundation you got, but if it’s Makeup Forever HD, I’ve found that putting it on with a synthetic brush and then putting a second layer on with your fingers to smooth it out gives you a great coverage.

They both look good! But for your wedding, I prefer the second look with a little tweaking. My suggestion is add more eyeliner on top and smoke it out, blend it so no harsh lines. You did pretty good in blending the eyeshadow on your lower lashes, it’s subtle.

Also, add blush. Contouring is not enough. Blush will give you extra glow over your natural glow on your wedding day. And lastly, definitely the eyebrows. We often neglect it but it helps to frame your face.

Looking forward to more pics!
