Miss Porcupine's Picture
Miss Porcupine, NYC/Lancaster, PA Age and Occupation: 26, Sales Coordinator/Publishing Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Assistant Manager/Sales Engagement Date: August 8, 2010 Wedding Date: March 2012 Venue: Riverdale Manor About Me: I'm a born and bred New Yorker with a love/hate relationship for the city I have always called home. Although I may seem quiet from afar, I have a loud personality once you get to know me. I am a book nerd at heart, but love a night out in the city with good friends. I have a serious addiction to all things cheese, chocolate, cardigans, Mexican food, and reality TV. The future hubs and I met in college, settled in New York, and decided to go with a rustic/peacock infused wedding in Lancaster, PA, right near his hometown. Come the big day, we will be together 5 years, and we're looking forward to making it official!

You Put WHAT in the Mail?

September 16th, 2011 @ 10:20 am by Miss Porcupine

*SPOILER ALERT* You’ll never see this one coming, but we did get engaged! Mr. Porcupine proposed a few weeks into the jittery madness that overtook our home. That’s a short, presh story for another day.

Personal Photo / My side job in life is making horrible, unflattering facial expressions.

Let’s rewind back to the bachelorette-party weekend. Even though I was unsure of what was going on down in his hometown, Mr. Porcupine was indeed ring shopping with his dad. We had texted and chatted sporadically throughout the weekend, and he had made up a slew of events that he and his dad were partaking in (including going to Wegmans, which I remember because I freakin’-A love Wegmans and wish we had one in NYC). He was completely believable, and I had no concept of how he would have had time in between all this stuff to ring shop. I had completely deleted the possibility from my mind.

In reality Mr. Porcupine, ever the planner and researcher, was learning all about the three Cs (cut, clarity, carat). He had been doing tons of online research for months, and decided to check out his family friend’s jewelry shop while in town. Mr. Porcupine wasn’t really liking with what he saw. Although he found a diamond he liked, he didn’t like any of the bands they had presented him with. He knew I wanted a thin diamond band, and he was on a mission to find it. After some deliberation, they let him TAKE the diamond to another jeweler to see it on some other band options (which they didn’t offer at their shop). After leaving behind some pertinent credit card info, in case of accidentally losing it, they were off to Smyth Jewelers in Baltimore, 45 minutes away. I was shocked when he told me this. This is the guy whose passport I hold on vacations because he is afraid of losing it! The guy who checks his pockets 10 times to make sure his wallet is there! He was strolling along with a diamond! What in the…

At Smyth he says he liked the selection a lot better. When comparing the diamond he had brought with him with a comparably priced one from Smyth, he decided he would buy everything from there (band AND diamond). With the jeweler’s help he picked out the band and diamond and placed an order right there and then. After returning the other diamond, he went home and continued over the next weeks to email about specifics of the ring as it was welded, created, or whatever it is you do to make a ring. My ring knowledge still remains at “Oooh sparkly. Oooh shiny.”

The kicker…they MAILED the ring via UPS to Mr. Porcupine since he had no time to go back to Baltimore. Being afraid I might somehow intercept this box, or notice the UPS slip when they missed us while we were at work, the ring was delivered straight to our nearby UPS pick-up office. I can not believe JEWELS were sent in the mail. Maybe this is more common then I know, but something about this screamed JEWEL HEIST when he told me. No wonder he was so jittery—diamonds were going through the parcel service! The same parcel service that loses 2,309 packages when I mail stuff at work. (OK, that’s a lie, but I have lost many a package in the mail!) And to make matters more cumbersome, the ring was delivered the day before my college roommate’s wedding, and Mr. Porcupine was working long hours. At one point he asked a friend of ours (in town for the wedding) if she could pick up the ring at the UPS store. She was all “HELLZ NO! I do not want that responsibility.” All in all, it was unnecessary for her to get it and he was able to pick it up just fine and dandy.

So of course the normal thing to do is for him to get the ring, stash it at WORK (I still find this bizarre), tell all our friends he is in possession of it, and text pics of it to said friends. He also had to make it through my college roomie’s wedding knowing he would propose the next weekend. He told me that once he had it he wanted to do it right away and get it over with. But, he didn’t want to steal anyone’s thunder.

Did your fiance go about getting your ring in an unusual way?

I can’t believe that they send jewels in the mail either! After I was engaged I found that there where some difficulties with my ring as well…
My ring was also mailed and there was a huge winter storm that kept it from arriving on time. It was the day before Christmas Eve and we where eating dinner at a family dinner. I had no idea that anything was going on but now that I look back I remember my FSIL was on the phone all night and they kept talking about something but when I came around it was all hush hush… They where all freaking out that it wouldn’t get here on time meanwhile I am just enjoying dinner and conversations :) In the end both of my FSIL had to drive two hours on Christmas Eve to pick up my ring so my FI would have it here on time. I am glad that I had no idea what was going on because I would have flipped out I’m sure!

Such a cute story!! My ring came through the mail also, it was ordered from NYC’s diamond district, but shipped FedEx.

My name came via UPS as well. They send valuable things in the mail all the time, that’s why they also sell insurance.

My FI had no intentions of buying my diamond when he went to a bridal event at a local jeweler. We had popped in one day for fun and to see if it was possible I liked any stones other than a pear. In fact, I did not, a pear it was. She mentioned that while they didnt carry any in the store she could have some brought in for the bridal event. And that was the last I heard of it.

FI never mentioned the event again. At all. Ever. The event was the Sunday before we closed on our house (on Tuesday). Apparently he went and fell in love with my diamond and bought it on the spot on one condition - they could have it set by the next evening so he could propose when we went to our new house after closing on Tuesday.

They made it happen in 24 hours they set my beautiful diamond and FI was able to propose as we toured our brand new home after getting the keys. He popped the question in our now Master Bedroom - I think its so fun!

Hahahha! I was lol’ing at this post - this pic is amazing, and I fully expect that I will have one just like it one day. You’re my new fave!!

My SO keeps asking what kind of ring I want, and I keep refusing to even give HINTS until we go shopping together. Because (and I tell him this over and over), I don’t want him to be tempted to go ring shopping without me. The man just can’t be trusted. I know this from many birthdays and Christmases past. Love him, but I need to approve this shiz.

“Oooh sparkly. Oooh shiny.”
I agree! I still care much more about the look and feel of something than any specs. I actually named my engagement ring “Sparkley the Second” (the first is my promise ring).

Fun Historic Fact: One of that largest diamonds ever found (one of the “Crown Jewels” in the UK) was sent back to the palace via standard post while a decoy was transported in a heavily armored convoy. And that was a couple hundred years ago!

Congrats!
My husband proposed to me on a mountain in Colorado where I immediately dropped the ring down the mountain side. (scary to retrieve but I did). Going off the trail onto un-secured rocks was a big no-no.

I love it! Mine came through the mail too - I saw the package and was like “he’d never have that mailed!” so I didn’t think anything of it! And I know nothing about rings either - it cracks me up that my FI has all this knowledge of diamonds and rings now while it still means nothing to me.

OMG tell us how he proposed already, I’ve been waiting 2 posts to hear the story. haha although it’s been funny though.

BTW: I live in Mexico and there are legit jewelers that will ship diamonds here all the way from the states. Scaryyyy.

Such a great story! I also can’t believe people ups diamond rings! My FI bought my ring with his Mom and sister and gave it to his sister for safe keeping until he was ready to propose. He was afraid if he kept it I would find it

Diamonds are shipped ALL time time.
The jewelry store I worked at sent jewelry out to be repaired daily. It wasn’t just one piece of jewelry in a box either, but several pieces from different people. There were times when the boxes would get stolen or jewelry was stolen that the store had to replace.

He told everyone? And kept it at work? Interesting… At least he was guaranteed wouldn’t find it :-)

Love it! Mr. Ladyfingers had to ask my dad for my ring, since it was my mom’s. The “awesome” part was that about a week before Christmas, my dad calls me like three times one night and when he finally gets me, is all worried - “Mr. Ladyfingers called me and left me a message that I should call him back. Is everything OK??” Then he told me to ask him what he wanted. Uhh… thanks dad. I tried to play cool like I didn’t know, but it came out a couple of weeks after the engagement. ;)

I’m impressed that he kept all if a secret! I unintentionally RUIN *ALL* secrets with my freakish intuition about shtuff. I totally knew when it was coming for me and I wish I hadn’t realized it was happening, I ruined my own surprise, YET AGAIN, haha… but I’m still down with “ooo sparkly” “ooo pretty” :)
