About Mrs. Skunk

Tat-Tat-Tatted Up!

September 16th, 2011 @ 6:27 pm by Mrs. Skunk

This post requires appropriate background music.

Anyone else remember this song? I’ve been obsessed with D4L for forever. It could be their ties to Atlanta. Or it could be memories of blasting them on my boom box in my car while driving waaaay too fast. (Yes, I had a battery-powered boom box in my car…my CD player got jacked and my hourly weekend job didn’t exactly afford a quick replacement.)

Side story aside, I’m tatted up. Very slightly, but I’m obsessed with my bits of ink. The first one I got was when I was 18. I was with a friend while he was getting his tattoo; my mom called to check in on me, and I told her what I was doing. She asked incredulously why I wasn’t getting a tattoo as well. With that bit of affirmation, I signed the paperwork and was quickly in the chair getting my very first tattoo. I had known for a while I wanted a non-explicit symbol of the trinity because, while I am open to all faiths and don’t define my own beliefs, my personal foundation is in the Christian faith. I know it’s super trendy and there are tons of folks around with something similar, but I really love this baby.

Personal Photo / Ignore the scratches between the back two stars…a roller coaster had just tried to eat my foot.

While most people loved it, my grandmother was SUPER against this tattoo. She doesn’t like tattoos in general and definitely doesn’t think women should have tattoos. Unfortunately for her, I’ve never been one to follow the rules. So recently when MOH L. Bug was in town, we happened to dine right next door to a tattoo shop. We walked in to talk to them about a design we’ve been talking about for years. I walked out with this.

Personal Photo

It’s a zipper pull at the top of a foot-long scar on my back. I always knew I’d want something done with my scar, and since we were already in the shop I figured, why not? Grandma has since seen this one, so I won’t worry about whether or not I will cover it. So I will be proudly showing off this baby on the big day.

In addition, there are plans for a third small tattoo that might make an appearance at the wedding. Because we’re rock climbers, I am constantly taking my ring off and going several hours without my beauty. As a female climber in a male-dominated sport, I want it known that I am very much taken when I can’t be wearing my rings. I’m having a hard time deciding exactly what I want, though. The main criteria is that whatever I choose must be incredibly simple because of how small it will have to be, but I also want it to be unique and significant for us. What do you suggest? A design? Maybe my new monogram? Or maybe just the date?

A date or monogram would be cute! I also think just the word “i do” would be really cool. I thought about getting that done but was afraid the letters would show when I had my ring on and wasn’t sure I’d like the look of it. I love tattoos myself and have plans to get a foot one and wrist one soon! So far i only have one on the back of my neck. You’ll have to show us what you decide to get!

I’ve seen tattoos on ring fingers of the persons wife/husband in cursive. That would be simple, unique and very pretty at the same time!

You could get a “claddagh” done or maybe the Lovers Knot and play up the knots you make when climbing ;)

Apparently ring tattoos are illegal in MN… Sad! This is a great idea for you.

I don’t know why, but that zipper pull tattoo really freaks me out!

@Purquez2011: I’ve seen that and it’s really cute. But I’ll worry of it showing with the ring on though.

I’ve always thought it would be cute to get “taken” across the ring finger. I love the zipper- what a cool way to draw attention TO you scar. Totally badass.

My dad has a RAD Frankenstien scar on his ankle… I am totally showing that photo to him and suggesting he follow suit!

I totally love the zipper - I have a much smaller scar on my back, but I’m really trying to think of something to go along with it/cover it/mask it in some way, similar to your zipper. ((Fellow tattooed bride, btw!))

I wanted to get our date on my ring finger, but i’m very against names on my body, and my husband saw the date under the same principle as a name. so still no date as of now. unless i can sneak it in something else, hidden, like my sons name is hidden in a tattoo too.

Haha I think “taken” is really cute! Good idea Cannon! I’m also against getting names though, there’s just something about them. But a thin tribal or celtic scroll/knot could be pretty.

@KatieJean: ring tattoos are illegal??? Why on earth?!

I think it’s really sweet that you would get a ring tat where your ring usually sits. I’m with you wanting people to know you’re taken! Will Mr. Skunk get one as well?

And yeah, that zipper is awesome. I hope you don’t hide your tats on the big day! I could see some really cute shoe pics. And it’s probably too hard to find shoes (besides boots?) that would cover them up… right?

What about the eternity symbol? I think it looks like the figure “8″. You could make that small and it could have multiple meanings.

Love them! I got my first tattoo at 29, just because I could. It’s a little music note with wings, and I love it ever so much. I won’t be intentionally hiding it, but I think my dress’ sleeves will end up covering it a bit. I love the idea of the ring tattoo and can’t wait to see what you come up with! I also like the Claddagh knot idea.

I think “wife” would be really cute, or an infinity sign (:

@Miss Cannon:Taken is a really cute idea! I’d never thought about that.

@KatieJean: Illegal! That’s really interesting.

@Amber: That’s actually a really good idea. We met rock climbing and the figure eight knot is one of the first and most important knots you learn as a climber. That would actually be really meaningful.

@KatieJean - I’m originally from Minnesota and I’ve never heard that. Hmmm. And I’ve had several friends that had it done in Minneapolis. They are criminals, I guess! LOL :)

Maybe a thin, simple 3-strand braid going all the way around your finger?
