The Phases of Wedding Planning

September 16th, 2011 @ 8:16 am by Mrs. Ticket

You may have noticed by now that Mr. Ticket and I have been very fortunate when it comes to wedding vendors. Early on I told you how we booked our venue and photographers the first week we were engaged. Within a month of getting engaged we booked our DJ and caterer. Another month after that and we had our linens and flowers in place. We were truly blessed with how easy the process of hiring vendors was. With everything going so smoothly, I found early on in the engagement/wedding-planning process that I was running out of things to do.

I found myself in, as Miss Doily called it, “the in-between.” It lasted approximately five months. I attempted a few small projects, but really it was too early to do a lot of projects. We didn’t have space to store larger assembled projects (photo booth and archway), and it was too early to start baking/freezing cookies or buying candy for the buffet. So I began to relax and go back to my normal routine. While I still checked out Weddingbee on a daily basis and frequently added things to my DIY list, most of my time was taken up with family stuff, TV, video games, boot camp, date nights, etc. Then one day it was July…when did that happen?! Suddenly we were four months out, and I didn’t have makeup/hair booked for the wedding. We didn’t have a bartender, we hadn’t even started working on our invitations, I was staring down the list of a million DIY projects that weren’t magically going to get done on their own.

The in-between was over! While I was excited to start working on projects again, I was also overwhelmed. I had gone from zero to sixty in approximately five seconds, and I was getting worried that I wouldn’t be able to get everything finished. Mr. Ticket calmly took me aside and reminded me that I was the one putting so much pressure on myself. I didn’t HAVE to do every single DIY project; our wedding day would still be wonderful if I didn’t manage to design the perfect menu or program. (I so love that man.) Since then he’s also been helping more. He’s helped put together our invitations, he’s built our wine box and anniversary box, he’s helped with a (super failed—not his fault) yarn-ball project, and he’s generally been my rock every single day. Now I’m continuing to work on wedding projects, but I also make sure to take one day a week to RELAX and not think about wedding stuff at all.

Did you have an in-between? How long was it? Did you find yourself overwhelmed when it was over?

I’m in the inbetween! It’s awful. I want to do so much, but it’s wayyyy too early. For example: I’m probably going to have to tailor a dress for our junior bridesmaids because I can’t find ANYTHING that matches the older girls’ dresses. The problem? Our wedding is about eight months away and this girl grows like a weed and is super skinny. (I keep telling her that is a problem I’d love to have.) I can’t take her measurements until closer to the wedding because anything that fit her now would end up way too short!

I feel like I will be in the same place. Everything has been falling into place so neatly these first few months! I think the DIY stuff will keep me sane.

Yep, I’m there now! Wedding’s in April and we have a lot of major vendors done… I really want to start working on invitations but I feel like as soon as I pick something I will find something better! It’s too far away to HAVE to make a decision. Eeeeek@#$#@$@#!@!

We definitely had an in-between. In my next life I am going to try very hard to force myself to find a project to accomplish during that time to save me some stress towards the end.

The first few months of our wedding planning was a breeze, just like yours. But now, I’m smack in the middle of that “in-between” phase and I HATE it!! With 8 months to go, I feel like it’s too early to work on many of our DIY projects. But I’m trying to use this in-between time to research bridesmaid dresses I like, look for deals for our honeymoon, slowly shop for our candy buffet jars, etc.

This is such a common issue with planning a wedding. Even as a planner I run into this *a lot*. One way to avoid the panic moment is to revisit your list of to-dos/planning calendar every three weeks to make sure nothing is creeping up on you. Because it will jump out last minute. Also, with DIY projects, don’t feel like you have to do everything on your own. I love the DIY style, but somethings will cost more on your nerves than they are worth. Outsource those.

We’re getting married on Dec ‘12 (15 months away) and I’ve already started 3 DIY projects just to realixe it’s way too early for that. So i’ve doing vendor research (too early for bookings) and I’ve come to build a wedding book Monica-Geller-like. FI’s extremly impressed.

I feel like I’m “in between” right now, too!!

Miss Ticket - you mentioned that he made a “wine box” and an “anniversary box.” What are you planning to use these for? In the ceremony? I was going to make a box to put wine and letters in, but I didn’t realize some people did two boxes? Can you give me more detail? :)

Our “in between” ended a few months ago, but I didn’t really get into gear with the DIY stuff until this week, and it feels *so* good to work on it.. I feel like I’m kinda.. contributing, I guess, even though I’ve been bearing the stress and doing most of the organizing along the way anyway. But I feel like I’m doing something to help even out the balance between my paltry efforts that manifest themselves physically.

@Rachel G. - I’m so with you on the waiting to buy a dress for a growing girl. Our youngest bridesmaid is 15 and shockingly enough STILL growing, the girl just keeps getting taller and taller (I’m a touch jealous).

@Miss High Wire - I’m pretty sure that no amount of planning and early projecting will ever alleviate the stress we undergo immediately before the wedding. I did every project I could think of that wouldn’t be unreasonable far in advance and I’m still frantic.

@Naturally Yours Events - Thanks for the advice =) I’ve discovered something about myself since we began planning this wedding. I’m a total control freak! I’ve been hoarding DIY to myself because that’s the only way I know they get done the way I want and I don’t offend others by disliking how the project turns out. I’m working on it… Towards the end I have definitely started out sourcing more though.

@Coffee cup - Yay for the Monica-Geller reference! I carry my wedding book with me everywhere lately… it’s almost embarrassing.

@penguin_girl_0413 - Neither of these items will be used in our ceremony. I’m going to do a post on them soon hopefully. We are doing the wine box with letters in it after the ceremony with just Mr. Ticket, Myself, MOH and BM. The Anniversary box is comprised of 50 cards that we ask guests to fill out and then each year on our anniversary we open them up and read them.

I’m in the “in-between” period too! I figure things will pick up again once we’re 5-6 months out. It’s annoying, though, as I have all this time to do stuff NOW!! :)

I’m in a pretty lengthy “in between” period. Engaged May 2011….wedding date: January 2013! I have the venue booked (which includes basically everything from linens to wedding cake to drink/food) and also have the photographers booked. Everything else will have to wait a little bit! Doesn’t stop me from stalking wedding blogs daily though…hehe
