Chocolate Centerpieces…or Not

September 18th, 2011 @ 6:15 pm by Miss Porcupine

When it came to flowers, there was a lot of this:

I am not a flowery person. I don’t really know what that means, except although I think they look pretty, I’d rather have me some chocolate. However, chocolate centerpieces (although sounding fabulous right now) will just get eaten and/or melty, and don’t really go with our whole country-chic/peacock look.

Basically we want the wedding to have a rustic/natural look. While stalking potential photographers (yes, I stalk photographer blogs for pictures of our venue…) I would Google the sourced florists whenever I saw floral arrangements I liked. We want less flowers and more branches. And nothing too traditional or expected (like roses).

I wanted to book the florist earlier than “normal” on one of our Pennsylvania trips just to be DONE with it. I was only able to make two florist appointments when we went down to Pennsylvania a few months ago, but I figured that was a good start. It turned out to be all we needed, because unlike a lot of brides who spout out flowers they must have, I was more, “Uhhhhh, sure. Sounds cool.”

The first florist was sweet, but kept pestering me for the types of flowers I wanted. This was after I was completely honest up front. I told her I knew little to nothing about flowers and that I wanted branches with some blooms and a rustic/candle look. I also told her that I wanted flowers in greens/blues and a few peacock feathers strewn into the bouquets. I was disappointed that during the appointment she seemed confused by the array of photos I showed her and kept spitting out flower names like delphinium and viburnum, which meant nothing to me. I know the words “rose,” “tulip,” and “daisy,” lady. Hence my need for your services. I left feeling a bit confused and without a quote, which she said she would email to me in a few weeks.

Our next appointment was on Sunday, on our way back to NYC. It started off badly—the florist/shop owner was almost half an hour late. But, she quickly explained as she drove up like a madwoman, she had a last-minute funeral delivery to make and no deliverymen available. (They were all busy doing wedding-flower deliveries that morning.) It’s true—I guess you can’t really plan for a funeral order. And, stupidity got the best of me when I made the appointment, and I had not left my cell number.

The appointment got off to a great start. She took out little flower “flip books,” and as she listened to our ideas she would show us different flowers she could use in the arrangements. She pulled out vases and branches; suggested candles and table arrangements; and very clearly understood our vision. After a quick write-up in her office, she handed us a quote (which fit perfectly into our budget) and told us we could always change things to make it more affordable. She made it simple, she was knowledgeable, and she had great ideas. If a vendor has those three qualities I’m easy to please.

I gladly checked that to-do off my list (my mental list, that is, since I have failed to compile a written or typed list).

Were flowers a hard choice for you or the least of your worries?

I’m right there with you! I have been going crazy over flowers! I went to a couple florist that were nice and affordable but I knew were not going to do exactly what I wanted. I wound up going with the more creative, expensive guy.. I still haven’t 100% chosen what I want for centerpieces though! Your pictures are a lot like the ones I wanted!

P.S. I would stick with flowers instead of chocolate. I feel like you will be left with a lot of chocolate at the end of the night!

I love the chocolate idea! But I see your point. It´s like I wrote this post myself I’m not really into flowers so I want a lot of branches and candles, we´ll worry about the potential fire hazard later.

mmmm, chocolate centerpieces. You could always incorporate them by having a clear vase with layered colors of M&Ms. M&Ms come in a ton of colors (even without the personalization) and they might work if you want some chocolate. Sort of in the fashion of those sand creatures you could make at county fairs back in the 90s.

Also, if you are having an assorted cake table, you could always get a chocolate centerpiece for that. For a reasonably priced one, you might be able to contact a local culinary school and see if there are any students that could make one.

I was totally joking with the chocolate centerpieces, but I guess they really are always possible. Our florist made flowers make a little bit more sense to me though.
@carol: I love the idea of a chocolate centerpiece at the cake table. I will have to look into that.
@Coffee cup: I didn’t even think about the fire hazard of candles with branches! Oy, especially with kids and people drinking. I will have to put that one out of my mind for the time being, ha…

Your flower needs sound really similar to mine! I wanted lots and lots of green, and I never wanted anything just straight flowers. We ended up doing our own, which was the best thing ever–we got exactly what we wanted, and it was so much cheaper. Since you’re going for the rustic look (much like us), I highly recommend mason jar vases. They’re affordable and so cute, and guests go ga-ga for them!

We did our florals in green, blue, and white, with pops of a few peacock feathers here and there. I have a few pictures in my gallery here, but let me know if you want a few more. I’d be happy to send you some. Or my links for my inspiration photos. (c:

They were the least of my worries. I love gerber daisies and I knew they were dirt cheap, so I told the florist to give me pink gerbers, 3 bloom boquets/bouts, and to keep it under $500. That was pretty much the extent of my instructions.

If you had a way to “hide” the candles you could always buy the fake “candles”. The ones that flicker are so realistic! Now is the PERFECT timeto snag some with it being Halloween and all.

We are going to get some and use vellum paper to make a cylinder around them. I always keep them around the house and in our camping gear because 1.) they are cheap 2.) they are great night lights for guests 3.) they have a looooong battery life 4.) my house/tent/porch will not be at risk of burning down

Good luck with everything Miss Porcupine!

Flowers were by FAR the hardest thing for me. Yes, they expected me to know what they were talking about…… And the more expensive the less helpful they were. The reason I was going to them was for THEIR vision…. I had none! I finally found one lady and since I clicked with here I went with her…. but now she keeps trying to up the price. Live and learn.

I want exactly what you want and what you don’t want. I am dying to have tons of roses everywhere. Not because it’s expected, but because they’re my favorite. There will also be lots of greenery and branches, because I really want it to look like a wintry floral patch, or something like that.
Our florist meeting also went well simply because they had a lot to offer a rose-minded bride who still needed other options.
I’d like to see if there’s anyway you’ll end up with chocolate somewhere in your flowers. It could be rustic, maybe chocolate bark…?

I did all of the flowers and centerpieces for my wedding and no one even knew that it wasn’t done by a florist. The centerpiece idea we had was a little more modern though.

I’m glad that she was able to get your vision and keep it in budget… 2 points for the florists.

I only met with one florist. She was recommended by a couple people at work. I don’t know much about flowers but I knew that I wanted hydrangeas and roses….she was so helpful and she didn’t cringe when I changed my flowers and quantities. We’re now having roses, lilies and carnation pomanders as centerpieces. The flowers have been the least of my worries with this wedding. :)

Our flowers were a hard thing at first just because I wrestled between doing them myself and having a professional do them. Once we decided on the professional, though, the rest was easy — I gave them a rundown of the wedding style, they sent me some inspiration pictures, they were all fantastic, so I let them pick the flowers and the colors. And so far it all sounds great. I prefer to let them do their magic… it’s why I’m paying them!

I’m with you on the flowers, I prefer plants like succulents :) I’m only a few weeks away and somehow ended up frantically coming up with a solution for our florist this past weekend. It’s been stressful, but we finally figured out something other than the traditional full flower vases she was suggesting.
