Our Gluten-Free Wedding!

September 19th, 2011 @ 2:35 pm by Miss Petit Four

About five years ago Mr. PF was diagnosed with Celiac disease. For those who aren’t familiar with what that is, he is basically allergic to wheat, flour, barley and rye. Have you ever looked at the ingredients in products you’re eating? Gluten is in like, everything, y’all!

After struggling with it for about a year, he is completely gluten-free and he is much happier and healthier. So, what does all this mean when you’re planning a wedding? Well, we aren’t going to have a cake since he can’t eat it, anyways. That means no cake face smash pictures that I love so much, like Mrs. Prairie Dog’s. :(

Also, we had to be very careful about what we include on our menu.

Luckily our venue was very willing to work with us, and everything on on menu will be gluten-free! Some of Mr. PF’s family members also have Celiac disease, so they will be able to eat the food without any worries.

The only thing that will not be gluten-free is our bar. There is gluten in beer, and we decided that as long as we have other stuff for Mr. PF to drink, we can keep the beer for all our barley-loving guests.

All in all, there were some things we had to avoid, like bread and an amazing wedding cake, but at least Mr. PF will be able to eat freely at our wedding.

What are some obstacles you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Do any of y’all have a gluten intolerance? How will it change your wedding menu?

There are tons of gluten free cake recipes out there and bakers that do that and gluten free beer as well! :) IF you really wanted a cake. :)

I know there are bakeries that will bake gluten-free cakes. Are they super expensive? Do they taste like poo? So you could still have the smashing pictures. :)

I just found out I have a whey allergy (so bye bye cheese, most cookies, some breads). So that will mean a fairly strict diet on my part. And who knows about wedding food. I don’t want to think about it yet!

I am GF, so we worked with the chef at our venue to have as many gluten free items as we could. They made special rolls for us and modified recipes so that I could eat almost everything. We marked all of the items on our wedding menu that were NOT gluten free. Thanks to Mrs. Snow’s post on cakes, I found a wonderful baker who made us a super delicious gluten free wedding cake, our guests didn’t know the difference!

I have a gluten intolerance, basically I’ve removed all gluten from my diet as well, but my reaction to gluten isn’t as severe as someone with Celiac. I didn’t know about my allergy at the time of our wedding, so we still had cake. However, we have a few good family friends with Celiac and gluten intolerance that we made sure to have dinner, drink & appetizer options for. Our caterer was pretty great about that as well.
I hope you’re able to find a great gluten free dessert alternative. My favorite naturally gluten free dessert are flourless chocolate cakes. But I’m sure you could find a great gluten free cake recipe if you really wanted to cake smashing ;-)

I just found out that my boss is allergic to gluten last week. I have been thinking about what to do regarding his meal at the wedding for weeks. I may just have to pay extra for a specialized meal for him and a few others. Don’t want him to not be able to eat at the wedding.

Thank you for posting this! I was really starting to think no one else had this issue. I’ve been gluten free since I was diagnosed with Celiac 5 years ago.
It’s been a struggle to figure out what we want on the menu. He loves bread and fried things that I can’t have so we are going to split the menu and I’m going to make signs to designate the GF items (my Sister/BM is GF too). Also, we are just going to do appetizers. They seemed easier to make GF without worrying about someone needing a special plate.
Have you thought about an alternative for a cake smash? Can you bring in a gf cupcake for just the two of you?

My mom is gluten free. At my brother’s wedding they had a special cake for her that was gluten free.

Some of the recipes really aren’t that bad, I think they’re definitely worth trying, especially so you can have the cute cake-in-face pics :-)

Do you like cheesecake? You could look into getting a pretty looking Pellman’s or something similar and smash that too! I think they are gluten free… don’t know for sure, but it could be another option. :)

There is gluten-free beer! Redbridge is one; there may be others.

One of my good friends in college had celiacs and for her birthday I made a flourless chocolate cake. OMG it was amazing! It was so rich, like a brownie! yum! She also had other cakes made out of almond flour that she could eat. You should be able to have an assortment of gluten-free cakes, they might not stack though, but you could have different cakes on pretty cake stands.

My mom’s entire family is gluten free and has been for several years. Luckily, my caterer was on site when I toured my venue and seemed very open to making sure they have enough options for food.

I do plan on getting a second cake, which will be GF. Although, I may have to ask one of my aunts to bake it if the GF bakeries nearby can’t make it nut free as well (and maybe dairy free… lots of allergies on that side of the family).

Also, since I’m in the Pittsburgh area, I have the cookie table to think about. So, I’m planning on having two separate tables: one conventional and one GF (with the help of my family members of course).

Mostly, it seems like enough people are GF these days that vendors are aware and willing to work around the issues.

We haven’t been able to locate a baker in Mexico that will make a gluten-free cake. They don’t even know what I’m talking about! haha…
I could try and take a cupcake, but I’m not sure it would make it all that way intact. I should start trying out some G-free cake mixes and maybe I could make a mini cake when we get to Mexico :D
Oh boy, that sounds like it will come back to bite me in the booty hehe

My fiance has Celiac’s as well. We just started out planning and that’s the number one thing on my list when we talk with venues. We’re lucky though being in Chicago that most places can accomodate us and there is a dedicated gluten free bakery in the ‘burbs that we can get our cake/cupcakes from.

add wine to gluten free boxed cake mix instead water can improve the taste adding a blackberry wine to chocolate gf cake mix makes it really yummy!!!

I get really bad migraines from msg so we are paying extra to make sure that everything they do they dont add msg to it….

I just got married on 08/27/11 and we were able to keep all 3 meal options g free by telling out vendors. The big cake was normal and a small side cake was g free so we did have the cake photos!! :) My caterer knew EXACTLY what I could eat and even brought me a huge plate of g free appetizers to the bridal suite. Please search around and ask people about gluten free bakeries in your area. The bakery that did our cake (and my bridal shower cake) is starving for word of mouth referrals. Unfort I live in PA but there are many of g free bakeries out there!

My BFF (Dude of Honor) is a celiac so we made sure there were plenty of food options for him. At his own wedding, they got a gorgeous cake from Babycakes here in Los Angeles. http://www.babycakesnyc.com/

They Fedex around the country so maybe you could make special arrangements for FedEx to Mexico.

I just found out that I have a gluten intolerance after we booked an Italian restaurant for our wedding! Luckily they are able to accomodate my needs as I had asked them all about this before we booked since I have a friend with celiac. However, our baker doesn’t do GF. I’m trying to figure out if I want to just chance it with the one bite of cake or bring in some GF cupcakes from another bakery. My reaction isn’t very severe are times but do you really want to chance it on your wedding day???
