Bridesmaid Blues

September 20th, 2011 @ 12:53 pm by Miss Porcupine

I am having the bridesmaid blues…literally and figuratively, it seems.

On top of being really picky about bridesmaids’ dresses (nothing stands out to me), I cannot find the right shade of blue on the right dress. Yes, this sounds ridiculous, but here’s my problem.

On the rare occasion a designer has the right blue, they do not have it available in a dress I like. Most designers go with the standard royal, navy, teal, and baby blue. Those aren’t really my colors. I want deep blue and deep green. Navy can work, but I’m not ready to settle on navy yet. I have hope.

One Friday afternoon, on a glorious half-day summer Friday, a few of my bridesmaids who were also free (i.e., the teachers, nurse, and student) met up at RK Bridal in the city. We looked through the racks, and I picked a few dresses that I had already spotted online and also let the girls pick out what they liked as long as it stuck with the overall look I was going for.

I had previously thought my solution was found with Wtoo’s sapphire/emerald combo. I loved the colors together, and although it is simple I thought it had a unique look to it. The first bridesmaids’-dress fail, however, was seeing my very favorite dress from the interwebs off the rack. Apparently I forgot how different online vs. real life can be.

Although it looks flowy and simple, the fabric is THICK. It looked awkward and, honestly, really cheaply made (and the dress isn’t even cheap!). Sorry, Wtoo, just not my thing. The setback was a huge bummer because the dress comes in the EXACT shades of blue/green I have envisioned for our wedding colors.

Next up was a simple Bill Levkoff dress that I loved the shape of. But, when I saw the color choices I was a little disappointed.

Since the dress can only come in one tone and I want to incorporate both blue and green, I would have liked for my maid of honor to wear the green and the bridesmaids to wear the blue. The only colors close enough to what I wanted were navy and sage. Although I really like the way they look online, the shades looked really different in person. The navy was extremely dark, almost black, in person. And, the sage looked a little dull. Once again I was reminded why you should not go off of an image on a website. It is so important to see the product in a store!

The next dress caught my eye as the girls were in and out of four different dressing rooms in a multitude of dresses.

I loved that this dress would let me incorporate just a hint of green. Ideally I want the main color to be blue with just a green accent. Watching far too many seasons of David Tutera has made me fear green. For those who don’t know, David Tutera HATES green in weddings. He has some deep-rooted problem with Kermit’s hue. His facial expression alone when a bride brings up green makes me want to change my whole color scheme. Do not displease the Tutera—he is all knowing!

The dress was cute, but it wasn’t a favorite among the bridesmaids. Everyone preferred the one-tone Bill Levkoff. The Bill Levkoff did lay a little better; however, the girls didn’t try the dress on in the right size. The store only had one sample size that had probably been pulled on and off 900 times. I still felt it had great potential to look good fresh from the manufacturer. But, I’m really big on wanting my bridesmaids to look great. I’m not one of those brides who says, “Suck it up and wear it.” If a girl doesn’t like how a dress looks on her, it’s definitely going to reflect in the pictures and in person.

After an hour or two of try-on, no one was ready to pull the “buy it” trigger. Nothing WOWed me, and even though I’m not sure if you WOW at a bridesmaids’ dress, I don’t want to end up with that nagging feeling of “Ehhh, maybe we should have kept looking.”

The search would have to continue.

Has bridesmaids’-dress shopping been smooth sailing or a battle for you?

What if you used the blue Bill Levkoff dress and found a green sash for it? I think that’d do nicely!
Also, I had green bridesmaids dresses and it was very beautiful. So pshhhh to that guy!

Bridesmaid dress shopping was horrible. All the dresses I liked were about $400 and aboslutely would not work on all my bridesmaids’ bodies. Each girl has her own body issue - small boobs, broad shoulders, big hips (oops, thats me), big boobs…. and so on and so on. I ultimately decided to let me girls pick their own long black dresses and to PLEASE give me veto power. Hopefully this works out!

I’m with you on the color concerns. I want celedon green for my day (oh yay, and 6 different other colors, ya I know I’m crazy, but it’ll look nice in the end) . I want the same dresses with all the different colors. My solution so far has been Alfred Angelo, they have tons of colors and make dresses all the same. There dresses are inexpensive, but so far the fit as seemed ok, they apparently have a great seamstress too.

Have you checked out the dessy line? They have so many! I love the sapphire color they have but I haven’t looked much into green.

Have you been to Bill Levkoff’s website? My girls’ dresses are from there vibe gotten pretty familiar with his stuff and he has at least three dresses in that length and silhouette that have a sash. You’re right about the color choices, not being what you want, but the styles are there.

I got my dresses from Nordstrom.com. They have a lot of bridesmaid dresses in different sizes. You can easily return any dress to a store if you don’t like it and my bridesmaid did not need any alterations since they were able to get the dresses that fit them. Most sizes had to be exchanged, but eventually everyone found the perfect fit. I highly recommend Nordstrom !

My MOH tried on a WToo dress and thought it looked cheap, too. I have the same color problem but with maroon. The interwebs and real life are no where close most of the time. Also have the issue that my three ladies and myself live in four different states. Fun.

I’m with @SaraP2012: on Dessy! They have at least two or three shades of deep blue (don’t know about green). I had trouble finding my perfect shade of deep (but not quite navy!) blue, and I finally found a color+dress combination that we all liked there. Good luck!

Wow, bummer! My original color was serene blue from David’s Bridal, and they discontinued it before I even had a chance :/ Now we are going with silver and the girls all liked the dress I chose. I was thinking about Ann Taylor’s line of BM dresses, not sure if it would be the blue you were looking for though. Keep up the search, you will find something :)

We found one of our favorites at Alfred Angelo. It comes in several shades of blue and green. You can choose the color of the dress and the sash. The girls liked the fit very much.

Thanks ladies for all the suggestions. There is more to this dress hunt, and I’m pretty much set on a decision right now. Stay tuned. :)

My girls are wearing a dress by Bari Jay. It’s style 131 and can be styled with up to three different colors. My girls will be wearing it with a cream bust, light purple sash and eggplant skirt but you could see what blues and greens they may have.

I agree with others- focus on the right fit & blue for the dress and look to commission an etsy seller for a belt/sash that works in the PERFECT green. You can even show them that first pic as inspiration!
